Wild .Cat Hunks and XaUonal In the old days of Indiana banking, cvheik -"red dog" banks vrerc abundaut ind "Trild eat" banks were juitc abundant in Michigan, an unfortunate fellow who had fuite a quantity of that species of papar on hand presented it over the counter with a demand for coin. The cashier replied that he had the specie on hand, iut said that he could not pay it out with out violating the law, asjthc general banking act of the State of Indiana required him to keep on hand an amount of coin cjual to 15 per cent, of all the notes issued, "b'o you see' he said to the puzzled holder of the note?. "I can't giyo you any of it, for I've gut just the requisite 1T per cent, on hand, and I must keep it, for if I pay you I shall break the law, and the State forbids me to do that." This was a queer enough style of banks ing, but still it is not without its parallel in thc3C days. There arc some National banka, and not a few of them, who manage to do quite a? smart a thing as this Indiana banker did. Tho law requires them to keep a larger percentage than that named above of "greenback" currency on hand for the redemption of their notes, but they neither keep that amount of legal tendcis in their vaults nor redeem their notes. It has been demonstrated by the collapse of two or three of them, that tliey had not even two per cent, of legal tenders on hand, and they so managed by scatter ing their issue over the most distant places in the United .State, so as to prevent pers sons from getting a sufficient number of j them to make it an object to send them home for redemption; and if they could they would find it very difficult to discover the banking houses ot some of these rath er inaccessible institutions. The course of truo love i3 a race course, where there is often a false start. "VYe have a Scholarship in the Oberlin Commercial College which will be sold cheap to any person applying soon. A Circular and Catatonic of this popular institution can b teen at thh office. tf.
