it easier to make charge3 against others than to defend .bis own record and that of his party. He has cheek sufficient for a model professor of the science of humbug, as is shown by his charge against Mr. How of being a "bloody Know-Nothing." A pretty fellow is Mattingly to charge others with KnowNothingism, he who but re cently came from the midnight haunts reeking with the perspiration of excite ment urer the prospect of disfranchising all Catholics and foreigners. He, who, during the bloody riots of Louisville, Cin cinnati and New York, in which thousands of foreigners and Catholics were abused, insulted and outraged, and in which hundreds lost their lives, was a member of the order, and united in the fanatical cry of "down ' with the Irih and Dutch, Americans must rule America." IIa3 he, or those with whom he acts, ever repented of their Know-Xothingism ? have they even disavowed their fealty to the odious
doctrincs inculcated by that darklantern j conspiracy agairiat the liberties of the people ? No, never; and they never will ! because the doctrines then taught are j I among the fundamental principles of rad-' 4 i iicalism, and :oday they would if they J could disfranchise every Catholic in the j country, and every foreign born citizen jwua a wniie SKin, out mey wouiu ai ,onp, enfranchise the ignorant degraded i "1 I T 1 . 1 T-.i .1 11 a o negroes of the south and give them the ! preferuce over white men who happen not s to agree with them in religion and politics.
