Yarlettcs. 4 Trifle light as air." ' Theodore-Ilook was walking, in the days of Warren's blackiag, where one of the emissaries of that shining character had written on the wall, ''Try Warren's B ' but had beea frightened from his propriety and fled. "The rest is lacking," said tho Kit. At an agricultural dinner the following toast was given : The game of fortune shuffle the cards as you will, spades will always win. The man who courts a young lady in the r tarlight, probably expects to get a wife in a twinkling. 'I wonder where thesa clouds are going?" sighed Flora, pensively, as she 'pointed with her delicate finger to the heavy masses that floated in the sky. "I think they arc goiog to thunder?'1 said her brother. Servant girls are offered very higli wages ia Omaha 8525 a week and found 85 a week, board, lodging, washing, piano, bunday all day, carriage three times a week, and plenty of Frazcr's Lubricator ; aiigels. 5 a week and two negroes, and so on. Who'd marry ? A Western editor wishes to know whether the hw against the carrying of deadly weapons applies to doctors who carry pills In their pockets. Orioix of tue 'Printer's Devil." When Alius Manutius se tup in business as a printer at Venice, he came in possession of a little negro boy. This boy was known over the city as 4;the little black devil," who assisted the mysterious biblios factor ; and 3oiae of the most ignorant be, lieved him to be none other than the embodiment of Satai, who helped Aldus in the prosecution of his profession, One day, Manutius, desiring to dispel this strange hallucination by publicity, displayed the young "imp" to the poor, classes. Upon th;a occasion he made thir jhort but araeteristic speech : "Be U known to Venice, that I, Aldus Manutiust printer to the Holy Church and Poge, have this day made public exposure of the printer's devil: All those who think he is not flesh and b'ord may come and pinch him." This is the reason, why mischievous people, especially the girls, have aK ways indulged in the pleasant practice of pinching a printer's devil, whenever they could lay hands upon hi n. TnE Ladies and the President. A pleasant scene wa3 witnessed at the White House a few days ago. A number of youns; ladies, pupils of a female institute -it Baltimore, of which Prof. X. G. Brooks is the principal, and representing Maryland. Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and other Southern States, visited Washington expressly to pay their respects to the President. They were most cordially received, and Mr. Brooks, on behalf of the young ladies, addressed the President in a neat little spee:h, assuring him of their high admiration for his elevated statesmanship, and their grateful appreciation of his kind conciliatory feelings towards that section of country from which they cam?, in his efforts for tho restoration of the Union.
A Fine Farm. Messrs. Fowler k Earl, of this city, have one of the largest and mcst successfully cultivated farms in the country. It comprises 13,000 acres, instead of 1.300, as has been previously stated. This spring they broke up' 1,300 acres for corn, 1,000 of which was sod. They have also upon it 2,G00 head of cattle. There is some pleasure as well as profit in this kind of farming. Lafayette Jovrnal. A Lawyer and a doctor were disputing the other day about a bill a fellow owed each of them. He was only able to pay one of them, and so he left the natter to themselves who ought to have the money. "I ought to have tho money, as a matter of course," said the lawyer, "for I saved the fellow from going to the penitentiary." "Well," said the doctor, "I saved him frooi going to h 11." It is needless to dd which got the money. . Salt Your Chimneys. In building a chimney put u quantity of salt into the martar with which the intercourses of brick are to be laid. The effect will be that thero will never be any accumulation of soot in that chimney. The philosophy is thus stated : The salt in the portioD of mortar which is exposed absorbi moisture from the atmosphere every damp day. Th loot thus becoming damp, falls down to the fireplace. This appears to be an En giuli discovery. It is used with succes in Canada. i Reward or Unselfishness.- The Newburg Journal says: A little son of It. S. Sturgis, of Boston, in the excitement of having hooked a little fish, lost his balance and fell into the river, at Butter milk Falls, the other day. Lewis Lark jumped in and rescued him in an exhausted state. In a few days Lewis received a thousand dollar check from tho boy's father. "The Blues." An exchano paper saja there is no need of having the blue. It tell hor to be free from them. Thin is the prescription : Yitit tho hovels of the poTcrty-atricken, and tender them all the assistance in your power Depend upon it, such noble enjoyment will warm your heart, and cause your blood to course freely and w.irmly through stagnant veins. Charity expands tho human soul, give a generous color to the faded cheek, fills the dull eye with the lustre aud brilliancy ef benevolence, causes the sluggish gait to become elastic, drives away the hypochondriacal spin's, and gives buoyancy to the Whole body. Try. A writer in the New Orleans Christian Advocate says that, so far as he has ascertained, between one thousand and twelve hundred church houses were burned in the south during the war. These churches, he thinks, hed cost the people cot less than five millions of dollars. In the loss the Methodist were the greatest sufferers, the Baptists next, then the Proibyterians, the Catholics least. A Treason Case The valua of a pars don by the President was chown in a case before tho District Court of the United States, at Baltimore, last Friday. Philip Cashmeyer, under indictment for treason, appeared and plead guilty to tho indictment, and produced the pardon of the President of the United States. Judge Giles being satisfied Mr. Cashmeyer Lad complied with the conditions mentioned in the pardon, ordered him to be discharged.
Irishmen Churcli and PJety. It il a singular fact that Irishmen have always made poor CDcspirators. They are too open-hearted, generous and coc5ding to make traitors for tho Crown, so-called. The Puritans are terribly disturbed at the threatened invasion of Canada. They think piety will bo overwhelmed, and religion sunk ten thousand fathoms deep, if the Irish conquer Canada. Hence, the Canadian affair has assumed a religious hue, and will be judged by it. CYi. En quirer. A shocking accident occurred at Peru on day last week. The Miami Sentinel says as a Mr. Hickenbuck, the station airent at Waverly was oing up to Fort Wayne to attend the funeral of Judge Hanna, of that place, and was in the sleeping car, the rear car of the train, which it- switched off at this place. Just as the sleeping car was cut loose he attempted to jump on the train, but missed it and fell on the track in front of the sleeping car, which passed over him and killed him almost instantly. His head was mashed, both legs cut off, and his body horribly mangled.
A priest in New York has been preach ing against tilting hoops. He professed hi ignorance of the revelations made by the fashion at operas nnd theatres, na he never went there, but added : I can2t shut my eyes to the abomination when it is in front of me on the street. A family of nine persons resided upon a farm in Dcrry, New Hampshire, for a period of fifty-three years, during which time there was neither a birth, death, nor marriage in tho family; neither did they during the time put a letter in tho post office, take one out. or take a newspaper, Samuel Hanna, an old citizen of the Wabash valiey, and a brother of the late Joseph S. Hanna, of Lafayette, died at Fort Wayne last week. He was Vice President of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad. He leaves a large estate and a family of sous, who, to the honor of the dead be it 5aid, arc trained to iudustry, and worthy of their sire. The fad effect of these early habits, or the execra of riper years is to weaken and debilitate the Constitution, destrov the physical and mental powers, diminish I and enfeeble the natural leelings.and exhaust the vital energies of manhood; the pleasures of life are marred, the object of marriage frustrated, and existence itself rendered a term of um-eaiing misery and regret.
