THE DEMOCRAT
Local and Miscellaneous. VnvFKTiMNO Agents. C. II. Sctuyen & Co-51 Dearborn Street, and (Viok. Coiu-rx Pettixoill. New York City, and Geo. I. Rowei.l k Co., 23 Consrcsä St. Boston, Mass.. are authorized to receive advertisements for the Democrat. The flnt rose of suniuer Negroes. They aie most fragrant in the country, j The special term of court in session here last week, was brought to a close on Saturday last, the jury rendering a vcrdict for the defendant, Hester. This is the third trial of this came. We arc indebted to our liberal friend, N. D. Lovely, for a gallon of most excellent catsup. Happy be the man who rcmembereth the printer. Tuesday morning vc were greeted with the cheerful sight of a delicate fall of snow. Rather late for such conduct in the wcaths cr clerk. Many of our farmers, becomius: di? couraged with the prospects of a crop of winter wheat, rre sowing spring whent in its place. At very best we shall have but little wheat in this vicinity this season. The April number of Arthurs Magazine was received sometime ago, and f.-r some reason was not noticed by us. nt the time. No magazine is more worthy of notice than Arthur, and we shall hereafter be more punctual in noticing it. Our well-knc wn fellow-townsman, Billy Burns, we arc informed, has taken charge of the Stark County Times, and will make it the advocate of democratic principles hereafter. The Times pave up the ghost some time last winter while sailing under the black flr'g of abalitionism. Success to the enterprise under the new order of things. The wide side-walk in front of Biain's, Vork's and TlilPs, on Michigan street, is n decided improvement on the old order of things. The sidc-vralks heretofore in use were nbsolutcly impassible on busy days.tnd if a man got into a Gght on one of them he wes subject to be knocked into the gutter, and an inebriate could not indulge in half a stagger. Our neighbor used to suffer great inconvenience on this nccount. Passing the , , , , . -rocery store of Ab. lacker ays ao we were reminded e trn.ro n,.y had rti, I V Co., a few days of the immense spring, by feeing them opening; out. another installment of frc-di jgrocerie, which had just arrived, and which were bein marked lower than any heretofore received. They can be found one door north of Huck k Toan's hardware store. M. French, President of the T. . Sc C. H. W. Co., is at present stopping in town lookinz after the interests of the road. The commissioners appointed to make appraisement of damage for right of way. made their report on Saturday, the 21st. "NVe undc-tand that exceptions will be filed to their report ly the attorney for the road. The money for work due on the road is expected on "Wednesday. Wc propose taking a trip to Tennessec in a few days on business and will therefore be absent from the office three or four weeks. Mr. Osborne has kindly consented to takc exclusive control of the editorial management of the Democrat in our absence, while a competent and experienced workman will be found in tl.e office to attend promptly to alj business in connection therewith. Those who are indebted to us ara requested tu call and settle cither at this office or with J. S. Scott, who is authorized to receipt for all claim? paid to the office. Itst .Saturday we witnessed a pugilistic display which was rather amusing than otherwise. The combatants were t rangers . x1 i i ti ftr tor c-rch other and were both ignorant ot ,f .. inc causut o iu. iiucu puuiuieung, fsuiting in no bodily harm, finally satisfied both parties that it was much plcasanter to "Let dogs delight' Corporation Election. Wc wish to call tfcc attention of tV.c democracy of the Corporation to the near approach of the corporation election. It is time a convention ttatf called to make nominations. Our neighbor has already given notice that ho designs oppvjing the democratic nominees, gnd, to use hi favorite expression, '-that his forbearance i well-nigh exhausted" with the management of affairs. It must have been communicated from the stove to one of the sleepers oer the cellar near to where Mr. Vinnedgc must have been standing at the time. Tils hat rim was btidly torn, and the boot on his left foot had a large hole torn in it at the ankle joint, where the electricity passed to the earth. He was found a few moments after the accident, by his wife and daughter, who being frightened, sought safety with a husband and Hither in the cellar, only to find a more horrible scone than that from which thev had fled. lie had f:illen for-! Mr. Yinnedge was a man who had a large circle of warm friends in this county, and his death is deeply felt. Machine Poetry. Some years since there was published in our town paper, a half column of rhyme called "machine poetr-," a few lines of which, ran somewhat after this style : . Come to thg "Regulator" that popular Store, Where Lawns and DeLaines wave coolin the door. Come where they .eil cheap, but net with a los; I And where they will nowyon without looum cross , But Hank has gone into other business, and the machine ha? become rutty and won't work, and they have to content themselves with common prose now; yet, if you wish any kind of Bry Goods, Carpets.
