between five and six o'clock, a fire broke

out in the west end of Hewett & Woodward's brick block, on Michigan street and in a short time the whole building was enveloped in flames. The fire rapid- ly communicated to the adjoining buildings and spread with devastating rapidity through the whole row of business houses on the north and south, sweeping everything that come within its reach, extending to Gano street on the north, and LaPorte street on the south and only being arrested there by the labor and vigilance of the citizens. The fire company was on hand with engine, hooks and ladders, buckets, &c., promptly, but from some cause the engine would not work, and the fire had things pretty much its own way for some time. The wooden buildings made excellent material for the devouring flames and efforts to save them were of no avail. Goods were removed to places of safety,

and the streets were literally jammed with workmen,---men women and children worked in earnest, and ceased their labors only when there was nothing more to do. The fire engine was got in working trim to save the row of business houses

workmen, men,---women and children worked in earnest, and ceased their labors only when there was nothing more to do. The fire engine was got in working trim in time to save the row of business houses on the east of Michigan street, which had several times taken fire from the flying firebrands and sparks. Had the engine worked from the start, the fire could have been confined to the building where it originated, but unfortunately such was not

the case, and the result can be seen. The Hook and Ladder company did invaluable service in pulling down several buildings on the corner of Michigan and Gano streets, and stopping the progress of the fire across the street to the building in which this office and the post office are kept. How the fire originated no one pretends to know, some say it first caught in the office of Dr. Brooke, but those who were there immediately after the alarm was given, say it must have had its origin in the office of Dr. Long, in the 2d story of the building. The following persons are losers to a greater or less extent in this terrible conflagration which has laid in ruin and ashes the best portion of our town. We do not pretend to enumerate the amount of individual losses, as it is impossible even at this writing (Wednesday evening) to approach anything like a day evening to approach anything like a correct estimate of them: On Michigan street the three story brick building of N. Woodward was the first to burn, occupied as follows: First floor by J. M. Dale & Co., dry goods, and Davidson & Co., Clothing ; Second floor, by Mrs. Dunham, millinery goods, and Phillips and Johnson, Att'ys; Dr. Brooke and Dr. Long; in the third story was a public hall. The second building on the south was that of John Paul, occupied by him as a boot and shoe store. The third was

the boot and shoe store of Geo. Koch. The fourth was Corbin's block, in which were the grocery store of T. A. Simons, the drug store of G. Blain & Co., the grocery of Ab. Becker & Co. and the clothing establisliment of A. Leehenberger; on the second floor was A. Holtsendorff, barber; M. A. 0. Packard, att'y, and a public hall. North of Woodward's block the following buildings were consumed. First the saloon of Jacob Wickell. Second the bakery and grocery of Wm. Hill, occupied in second story by the two Drs. Borton. Third, the harness shop of A. Renbarger, occupied in second story by Mrs. Smith &

Mrs. Shook, milliners. Fourth the mer- chant tailor shop of A. Reisecker, and lastly the bakery of Mr. Nichols. On LaPorte St. the harness shop of D. Hartman was consumed and the meat market house of Messrs. Coons & Co. each belonging to Horace Corbin. Mr. Corbin's loss is heavy, there being little insurance on any of his buildings, nearly all the other buildings were more or less insured. The whole loss may be put at $250,000. K. A. ?.I.
