THE PLYMOUTH WEEKLY DEMOCRAT.
An Efirly Autumn. The indications throughout the month of August have been that wc should have early frosts this Fall. The incessant rains of June and July seem to have jrx!uccu ail unusually low state of the thermometer during the present month. While a few days have been moderately warm, the niirhis and morninirs have been cooler than usual at this season of the year. 1 he fact that corn, in consequence of the raiu, is backward, renders the prospect of early frosts much dreaded by farmers, because a crop which otherwise promises to be most abundant would thus be cut very short. There have already been some frosts in New Hampshire, Iowa, and Wisconsin, but whether they have done any damage to the crops has not yet been ascertained! Probably not. As the season advances, the danger from frost decreases, and a few weeks of such weather as we are now having in this latitude will place the com crop beyond danger. New Albany Ledger.
Diw.nr.irAr. ()itttiaie. On Mondav morn in z last as Miss HefTncr was coming up the river road, three miles below Spencer, near Uattlciuake Creek, she was stop-1 pedby two men, who compelled her. to dismount from her horse, and then dragged her over a fence and up the hill away from the road, where after blindfolding, gagging and choking her, and threatening to shoot her if she made anv alarm, tliev outraged her pcr.son. They then left and the giil made her way to the nearest house. The whole neighborhood was toon aroused, a number of men went from town and a search lor the villain? was made, but up to this morning without success. Xevcr before in the history of this country was crime so prevalent as now. We cannot pick up a paper without seeing an account of a crime of some description. An epidemic cf crime is sweeping over the country; its presence is felt in every ncighborhoid. As in physical pestilences, string remedial agents must be cmployed t3 eradicate the evil. Justice must punish with swift and powerful hand. Owen County Journal. The Xcw York Day Hook says the chil ilren of Jefferson Iavis. accompanied by their grandmother, were in this city several days recently, but, by some luck or chance, the "sensation" reports did not get hold of it, and they were unmolested with the usual impertinence of that class of bipeds. Xo sooner, however, had they got ou the train for the "West, than it was discovered who they were. The Albany papers chronicled their arrival there, and fetated that several Copperhead ladies rushed to kiss them. The ; loyal" organs were very much shocked that auy one would desire to kiss the children of a traitor ! Excellent. The following good thin" jve find ia the Xcw York Tribune of the 14th: "The Associated Press telegraphs from Nashville a letter written by President Pierce to Jefferson Davis in 1SC0, and it is published as a sensation in yesterda papers. It is a very oldstofy, vra.s prieted two years apro, and has served two or three political campaigns. A regro baby was bom in Petersburg, Ya., the other day with the exact impression of a two cent U. S. revenue stamp on his forehead. Litchfield Enquirer. Tho circumstance is somewhat strange, and not very strange either, when wo consider the vast quantity of revenue stamps in circulation. The mother might probably have been choked on a stamp, or else, as an exchange remarks, been chased by a revenue collector. Many years ago, whilst residing in Philadelphia Iliad progressed gradually into the last stage of Pulmonary Consumption. All hop.-s of my recovery being disputed, I was advised by my phys'ciin, Dr. Parii-h. to remove into the country. Moorestown, New Jersey, being my native place, I wa removed Jjiitlu-r." My f'at!;er and all his family had lived and flic J there and lied of Pulmonary Consumption. On my arrival I was put to bed, where I lay lor many weeks in what was deemed a hopeless condition. Dr. Thornton who had been my father's family physician, and Lad attended him ia his hist ilines?, was called to fee me. He thougnt my case entirely beyond the reach of medicine, and decided tl.ftt I must die, mi l gave me one week to arrange my Umponl affairs. In thig apparently hopeless erudition. I ami;o a healthy man. with a large healed eie atiix in the middle h.b" ofthe ri-hi le.ogand tho lower l.ibo hi pati.ed with complete adhesion of the pleura. The left lung is .-ouiiJ, and the upper lobe of the riht one is in a tolerably healthy condition. Consumption at that time was thought to ba an incurable disease, by every one, physicians as well as those who were unlearned in medicine especially such cases as wer reduced to the condition I was in. This induced many people to believo my recovery only temporary I now prepared and gave the medicines to consunpliren lor some lime. and made many wonderful cures; and the demand increased so rapidly that I determined to offer them to the public, and devote my undivided attention to lung diseases. 1 11 truth, I was next to forced to it, ft.r people would send forme f.r and near, to oscci'taiu whether their cases were like mine, For many years, in conjunction wit my principal ot'.iee in Philadelphia, I have been making regular professional visit to New York, Huston, Haiti moreand Pittsbursr.
