Too Much Mother.
Arteriitis Ward gets off the good paragraph following Our ballad writers put too much in their melodies. Thus wc hare "Dear mother, I've cotac houc to die." "Mother is the battle o'er?" Mother, dear,0 pray for me" " Write a letter to my mother," just as if she would do it until he washed the cork from his face. A mother is a good thinj;. Without mother?, in fact, life would be unplc.-i.sant. ut why sin; the maternal parent's so persistently, and in Euch shaky verso? Why not vary the thing, and occasionally produce a father or two '! If we must continually sing about our parents, let us by all means give the "old man a chance." A Sure Remedy for a Felon. This very painful eruption with all the ''reine dies" recommended, is seldom arrested until it has run a certain course, after causing great suffering for two or three days. The following remedy is vouched for by the Advocate as a certain thing from its cwn knowledge. Take a pint of common soap, and stir in air-slacked lime till it is tho consistence of glazier's putty. Make a leather thimble, fill H with this composition, and insert the finger therein, and a cure is certain. This is a domestic application that every house keeper can apply promptly. The Presbytery clergy of Missouri have issued a long manifesto , g:ving their reasons why they cannot take the oath prescribed by the new constitution of that State. In addition to other objections which they urge, is the ouc contained in the following extract : "Wc object to the prescribed oath, although this is not an insurmountable difficulty in f r way, bccaussc it makes a cruel nnd invidious distinction between mini.-tcrs of the gospel and nearly k!1 other clashes of citizens. Men may devote themselves to the medical profession, or to an' mercantile pursuit, or to any of the mechanical arts, without let or hindrance; but that peculiar calling which belongs to a kingdom not of this world, is the very vocation which the framcrs of the constitution have stigmatized and held up to public suspicion. Such an act is neither just nor generous and if it was the object of the convention to drive away; certain ministers, who, for any reason, was o!ious to them, it would have been far better, and the world will say it would have beeu far more manly had they inx vented somo fairer mode of accomplishing tbeir end." TJltL'TAL O'JTiZACE. A fcw lays sin CO Miotlicr mo.-1 brutil and fiemli-li outrage was coiuniitttfl near "Wheeling. Two ladies who were returning from that city to their homes were overtaken y seven soldier?, ouc of whom seized the reins of one of the horses, stopped the animal and dragged the helpless woman to the jrround. Tho inen forced the wo nan from the road, nnd there each of the fiends in human form violated her person and shamefully ah used her. The other lady fortunately witched her horse forward, and escaped from the outlaws. As. yet none of the fellows have been arrested. AVc hope a Fpecdy arrest and the most condign punishment will .soon overtake them. Pittsburgh Chronicle. Chickens by tiik Wholesale One of our fricnd-i in the suburbs has fitted up an apartment on his premises, in which to hatch chickens through artificial heat. The first experiment consisted in arianging fifty eggs upon shelves in the room, covering them with cotton, and raising the temperature i.f the room, with a gas heater, to 1U." degrees. This wa doue three weeks ago, and yesterday the chickens commence 1 to break the fchell, and to peep in the conventional manner common to all well regulated chickens. Our friend hit upon 105 decrees as the proper temperature, by placing a themor.icter under a setting hen, which raised the ir.ureury at that point. lie is much pleased with Jiis success, and thinks of continuing operations on a larger scale. Cleavclan J Herald. A down carter advertises for a wife after the following fa.-hion : "Any jral what's rot a cow, n jr-od feather bed with comfortable fixing $500 in hard pewter one that's had tho mcaIes, and nnderstand.- tendm children ean find a customer fr life by writ ti' a bilby dux, addressed to Q. Y.. and ttiekin' it in a crack in Uncle Kbenezers barn, back side jniniii' the hoir pen." Liberty, like lore, is hard to keep as to mm m m m m. . win. and the exertions bv which it was originally gained will be Avorsc than fmitless, if they be not followed up by the asMuuuiM oy wmcn aionc u can oe prescrv-1 cd A Patiext JriMiK. The most cxtra ordinary instance on rucord in modern times, is that of an Illinois judire, who' listened silently for two days while a couple of wordy attorneys contended about the construction of an act of the legisla ture, and then ending the controversy by miietlv remarking: '"Oentlainen the law is repealed." aXOT m;ffh ient LAI sK. It was customary years ao, to publish from the pul XT r . pit, Connecticut, banns of matrimony. On one occasion an old man rose and said: "J lorbnt tnc banns. Un bcini: ackcd to jstate his objections, he replied: "I had reserved Jinah Curtis for myself." The objection was not deemed good. Mr Jay Co jkc has just made fin ex planation of the means he employed to obtain in one w.-i;k subscriptions to the na tional Lonn auovitintr to nearly one hun dred millions of dollars. The explana tion is in a single word h; advertises ! This explains the marvel. He accomplish ed nothing that another man may not in his own business. Liberal adver tising in the papers was the rod with .yhieh he smote tho rocfc, nnd pcriormcd a h nancial miracle. I'hila. Trice Current. A certain dissntislicd vrife .ays her litisband is such a Idurucrcr that he can't try on a new boot or a new shoe without "I uttin i rr IiTj fonf in it. "
