THE DEMOCRAT
Local and Miscellaneous. The New York Tribune inquires whether the Democratic party is 'to be or not to be." The evidence is daily and hourly accumulating that it is 'to be" very de cidcdly. Dress M akin is Mrs. Bell C. fattingly has commenced the Dress Making business in the room occupied by Mrs. Dunham as a Millinery shop, -where she will be pleased to tender her services to the !a I'es of Plymouth and vicinity. The Maine Democratic 5 täte Convention met at Portland on Tuesday last, and nominated Hon. James Howard, of Portkin fur Governor. An exchange paper says the "loyal" papers arc calling for a new election in Itichmond. They manage elections down outliou the principle ''heads I win, tails you lose." If mir candidates are elected, well and good; if not, yet the election asidö, and 4try, try again." Discontinued. The post office at Tippecanoctown, in this county, has been "discontinued. This mates it disagreeable for our subscribers, who have been getting their papers at that place. Until subscribers notify us of a desire to change their address, we shall send the Tippecanoe package to Bourbon, where they can hereafter get their papers. Dedica tion. The members of Plymouth Lodge No. 140 of F. k A. Masons "will dedicate their new Lodge Hall on Friday tlie 18th, inst. The ceremonies itvill commence at half past one o'clock sind will be conducted by M. W., Harvey i. Hazelrig Grand Ma?ter. All Master Masons and their families are invited to be present. By order of the Ccmmitte of Arrangements. Cuuel. A Massachusetts philanthropist got a negro into his room at Mobile the other day, and cowhided him nearly to death, for simply insulting a white man's wife. How cruel these Puritanical philanthropists are to their colored brother? lown south ! They ought to be ashamed. Agricultural Xollce. There will be a regular meeting of the Marshall County Agricultural Society, held at the Court House in Plynouth, on Saturday the 2d djy of September at 1 o'clock P. M., at which time arrangements will be completed for holding the Pair, commencing on Thursday, the 12th lay of October. Kvcry life member and friend of the Society is expected to be present. By order of the Society. G. BLAIN, Pres. M. Cummincs, Secy. Masonic Notice. Notice is hereby jriven that there will be an election held at Lodge Hall, of Plymouth Lodge No. 149 of V. k A. M., on the evening of the 18th day of August, 1SG" for the pur p&sc of electing thr:c Trustees for said .LiM-ge. Jy order of the Lodge. C. K. Toan, Sec'y. A Man Shot. Last Saturday evening a returned soldier by the name of Timo hy O'Sullivau who resides in this place, xvas in a state of intoxication, and a friend living some fifteen miles south of town was nt his hou-;c on i visit. "While there O'Sullivan undertojk to show his friend (Jeremiah Horan) how they fire a salute in the army and unfortunarely med a ball cartridge for the purpose. When the gun went off the ball struck Horan in the head blowiug out his brains instantly. A Coroner's inquest was held on the dead body of Horan on Sunday, and returned a verdict of death by the accidental dis charge of a gun in the hands of Timothy O'Sullivan, and that said O'Sullivan was at the tix.ic of the occurrence in a state of intoxication, ami that the accident was owing to the carelessness of said O'Sullivan. This sad affair should be a warning to all not to meddle with fire arms while in a state of intoxication, indeed we know of no good reason why so many men should keep loaded firearm? within easy reach at all times. The temptation to rise them on slight provication, or to needlessly handle and exhibit them, is becoming very great with many persons, and unless pome change should be wrought in the public mind on this subject, we may expect to hear of such accidents frequently. A frightful railroad accident oceurrcd Tuesday morning on the Housatonic Kailroad, in Connecticut. A locomotive ran into a train of cars and exploded killing seven persons and scalding and frightfully mangling eleven others. A tariff is the true modern defence for a fcaboajd, And protection to domestic indus try,-the surest method of acquiring an preserving the wealth of a nation and 'maintaining its glory among the people o '- the earth. Philadelphia. Preis. A tariff is the true defence if you wish to guard against the entrance of com mercc.
TIic Convention. The Democratic County Convention held in this place on last Saturday was largely attended and the proceedings were most harmonious and satisfactory. Every township in the county was fully represented and by the best men in the County. The candidates placed in nomination were J. W. Houghton, Mr. Garrison, L. II. Allcinan and J. M. Klinger, all of whom are loni? and favorably known to the voters of Marshall County, and against whom no word of disparagement can be truthfully spoken. However, of them more anon. The resolutions, published in to-days paper speak for themselves and were passcdVitlnnanifestationsof satisfaction, and embody the principles by which the Democracy of Marshall County most firmly stand. All together the Convention was most pleasing to its friends, and the coming election will approve its action by a ma
jority that will mark Marshall as the ban ner County for the "white man's Party." Circuit Court is in session this week, Hon. A. L. Osborn, Judge, presiding. Seme forty or fifty liquor cases were disposed of on Monday. Convictions on plea of guilty, took place in about one half the ca.cs and the others were non-prossed. The woman Cams, jointly indicted with "Mollie Fish" for stealing goods f.om iue siore oi o . j-'aie cv, io., last wiuer was tried and aeqnitUd although Capt. Hamlin, a clerk in the store at the time, swore that he saw them take the goods am! made them bring them back from the wagon in which they had deposited them. Several indictments have been found this term, and we suppose the grand jury as usual will make another raid on the saloon keepers, the effect of which will be'to cu rich to a certain extent the school fund, and the State's Attorney, at the expense of the aforesaid saloon keepers. The docket of civil causes is li;ht and the business mostly disposed of. The case of IJcaty against Hester, an change of venue from Starke County, is set for trial to-day, and the murder case an chanire of venne from LaPortc County is tat for trial on Tuesday next. Several of the most important civil causes have been continued till next term. For the edification of the Democrat man ! and his 'friends" we will state that he is not the ''proprietor of 'those' ittcrs," but is no less a friend of tltltnt fcUcr' (our namesake) than the Closhcn editor and hit fr'emh.
