THE DEMOCRAT
Local and Miscellaneous. Why diJu't Mr. Muttinjrly advocate his negro suffrage doctrine in the rcpublicau Convention last Saturday? The mayor of Portsmouth, Ya., hashcen arrested by the military authorities, it is supposed for interfering with some of their special privileges. TitE editor of the Republican is apparently anxious to inaugurate a system of political rows, and general lawlessness in this county. We advise him and his friends uot to do it. Wk have had several days of finweather, affording farmers ? excellent opportunity to secure the ;!.- anding vheat erop. The tclepraj h reports President Johnson ill again. Oar impression is that his frequent severe "attacks" could be greatly modified by a reduction in the daily allowance of his whisky. Somk indiscreet chap j.layeil the old t-cratch with the dogs on Monday night last, in tlii place, by sprinkling fresh meat dosed vrith strvcliiiine around rather proniisculously on the stroct.. Svnic very valuable dogs were poisoned bv this profess. Distributing: poison ia the streets is damrerous business. TllK abolition press throughout the country have conic out with singular unanimity in favor of negro sufTrng?. making the question a test of "loyalty." Why holdeth back our neighbor? Hath he ceased to walk in the pleasant ways of the just and pure ? Hath he "back-slid ?" 1 A I Mio ad Acciukxt. The passenger train on the C. 1 & C. Kallrord which leaves Plymouth at 4:15 p. in., ran off the track on Monday last at Pine Creek, about twelve miles north from here, and was badly smashed up. We are entirely cut off from communication with La Porte, but the road will probably be in a condition to resume business to-day. Monday last our town was the scene of another of those dreadful riots which -arc becoming so pr . .i! .tit in our midst. A returned solvit t "mobbed" another returned soldier ! tween the eyes ami on the left cheek. If our copperhead justices further rcfu.-e toattend to such cases, our soldiers will bo compelled to band together and see if some things cannot be done as well as others. elf preservation is the first law in nature. Aid to Jeff. Davis. A private meeting of the fiicnds of Jeff. Davis was held in New York on Monday, for the purpose of taking measures to secure him a fair and impartial trial. A committee was appointed, of whom Mayor Gunther was the Chairman, to raise funds for the object stated. .Masonic Not ice. Notice is hereby given that there will be an election hold at Lodge Hall, of lMvinoiith Lodere Xo. 149 of 1'. & A. M., on the evening of the lSth (lay of August, 1800 for the purpose of electing three Trutcs for said Lodge. JJy order of the Lodge. C. K. Toax, Sec y. Disorhekly. The soldiers at the camps near Ii dianapolis, are said to be very disorderly while waiting for tlie paymaster. Oa Monday evening one of them .assailed a citizen in one of the most public streets of the city, and was shot dead by the latter. Collision. Au affray occurred at St. Louis on Tuesday between negroes and discharged soldiers while the former were celebrating the 1st ot August. Some of the negroes were beaten nearly to death, "Their joy may be turned into sorrow sooner than they anticipate." The above bit of bluster is contained in an article published in last week's Republican, and is addressed to Sheriff Loiran and Constable How. AVe advise the editor to go slow, for should he excite a mob to interfere with these officers in the discharge of their official duties, the con?cjuences would not be at all satisfactory to the editor and h! mobiles. Wc admonish thj editor therefore, to beware, and not flatter himself that in case he incites a mob the soldiers will assist him. Two thirds of them speak in words of conterjpt fur him. 4 From Intliaiinpoli. Indianapolis, Inl., July 31. The weather for the pa.t three days has Ucn remarkably fine, and farmers have improved it, working even throughout Sunday, scvinj; their grain and hay. The 37 the regiment, Hth cavalry, and 24th battery were received by the civic and military aulhoritit ,s to-day. The 1 1 th Indiana is expected to-morrow. Railroad comnmnic itinn, interrupted by the late rains have been generally resumed. TwoscrounJrel.H in soldier's clothes, at at noon to-day, while the clerk.s were absent for dinner, entered the Hellcfiuntainc railroad pay office through a window, and breaking a lock, abstracted 83,000. They were, however, discovered, as they trcre maki.ig their escape, captured, and the in onrj recovered.
