THE DEMOCRAT-
Local and Miscellaneous. Dr. W. II. Davenport, Surgeou Den tist, will bo at tlic Edwards House in Plymouth, on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of thi3 month. The Democracy of Allen County met in Convention at Ft. Wayne, on the 1st inst.. and nominated F. S. O'Rourkc for Auditor, and Wni. Long for Commissioner. The New York Tribune, says the Dos'on (Courier, declares that the negroes "saved ihe coiatry in the hour of itssorest need." "We have some slight recollection that a few white men had a hand iu the matter. A great change in the weather from warm to cold occurred here last Saturday evenin?. The thermometer fell in a few hours some thirty degrees, and on Monday overcoats were in demand at a premium. The man Cohoo whi was so intent last week on putting an end to his earthly career, after a night's lodging with the pro prietor of the Cross-barred exchange, widely concluded to abandon the enterprise, itnd left fjr parts unknown. A Xicn Magazine. We have received nt this office Madame DeMorst's Illustrated Monthly and Minor of Fashions. It is by far the niost beautiful, as well as the most useful, Fashion Magazine in the United States. Turins So per year, office of publication iJO IJroauvray X. i". The 7:M Kejjr. lud. Vol's, two companies of which were raised iu this couuty, has been paid oft" and the men mustered out. The most of those belonging hero arrived last Sunday evening, the officers having been detained for a dav or two longer at Indianapolis to get their pay an 1 musterout papers. The owners of property on Michigan Street, between Gano and Washington, arc about planking the gutters so as to carry off the water and prevent the digg'ng of the g ouad into holes at the various hitching places in that locality. This improvement will be a real benefit, as well as an addition to the good looks of the street. The rains which occurred during the fore part of the week have materially interfered with harvesting, many farmers not yet being done. We understand aho that the irrain rcmaiuiug uncut i.s in many places badly lodged and to .some extent injured by the storms of the lat few days. The gn'ss in most meadows is thrown tlown, but will, it m thought, generally rise ?gain but little damaged. The side-walks in some places in the business part of town need repairing at once. There is no good reason why the owners of property that rents for SoOO to per annum should not keep the walks in front of the property at least in tolerably good repair. Several places on Michigan and La Porte streets are really dangerous to pass over at night, and very uncomfortable even in daytime. A man by the name of Snow a few days ?ince rm'md i glass of water on an iaoffensivc dutchman while at dim. er at one of the Hotels in this place, and after dinner lollowcd up his naughty tricks by tailing upon him a number of blows with the fist, for which stormy demonstrations he was arrested and taken before a justice of the peace who charged him seven dollars and thirty-five cents for the performance, which he promptly paid with an iy coolness worthy of the occasion. An order Ka3 Leen isue l for tlie mustering out of the entire Army of the Tennessee. The following Indiana regiments arc in this army: Twentieth, Twenty-second, Twenty-third Twenty-fifth, Thirtythird, Thirty-eighth, Forty-Second, Fortyeighth, 1'ifty-third, Fifty-eighth and Fifty-ninth, all of them veteran organizations. The work of mustering out will be immediately commenced, and Ihc regiircnts will jjr-.baLly commence arriving next week. The cholera his made ita appearance in Chicago. The wonder h that onic malignant epidemic does not constantly rage in that filthy jdacc. We venture the assertion that there is not another as filthy a place this side of "fiddler's green" ns Ch icago, except it be soarc cf the back alleys in Plymouth. Seme xncans should be devised to renovate the mi?erabJq dirty .irauReous receptacle of filth and garbage that havea local habitation in our otheriwbo pJeasant and prosperous town. Lost ! Lost ! At my house in this city, corner 15ih and Green Streets, 'arc two dear little girls, who hardest the addre?3 of their uncle, "Willis Hrys, who lives somewhere in Indiana. They aro homeless, and from the State of Georgia. They are of that class that have ecen becr days before the war. I will be very glad to jend five dollarj to the County Itecorder, or whoever may see this and send mo the address of their uncle, and Bend word to Mr. Hays. W. S. Sedwick, Louisville, Ky.
Beginning to Smell a Rat. A Boston paper having nuellcd at the negro suffrage question, snuffs mischief iu it, and recoils with this profound conclusion: It is very evident to cur mind that we must approach this question with great care, lcat we injure the frecdmen through a mistaken idea of what will contribute to their real and permanent benefit; for it must le understood, we think, by all, as Theodore Darker once remarked, that the race is somewhat allied to "equatorial grasshopper.-?," and they might jump the wrong way. As a race they don't desire to leave the South, nor is it desirable that they should; and if they remain :it the Suulh. the chances are if they could vote that they would be quite as likely to vote for persons whom it is not very desirable to sec chosen to high offices, as it is that they would vote for the right mau.
The St. Jo. Register says the heavy rains of the preceding week considerably injured a good deal of clover aud timothy already cut in this county, but not hauled iu, besides preventing the cutting of the balance. The wet weather lias thrown the grass and wheat harvests together, and it wi!! be difficult to uet through with both in time on account of the scarcity of hand. A gentleman writing from Yicksbur::, Miss., says. Vicksburg presents a busy scene just now. iJusiness of all kinds is rapidly .-rintring up. Traders are coming in, and new store.-, are opcLing every day. The country people line the roads with all de.-criptions of teams and vehicle, bringing in their produce and earning out all kinds of "store" supplier, for their families of which must cf them stood in need. Trains run as far as the Big Black, on the Yicksburg and Jackson Railroad, and it is expected that the bridge across that river will soon be completed, placing us in C'jiinnunieatiuu with 'cw Orleans and the Xorih. S-'rom rVcw Vo i. Xlyv Yokk, July 0. The Herald's Ilichaionu, Lyncbburgh, and Norfolk correspondence contains interesting f o'Jthern news. Martial law h.s been re-established iu Norfolk, owing to the riotous conduct prevailing there. There is much suffering from destitutbu in Richmond. It is ascertained there i? much more old Virginia tobacco on hand in the country about Lynchburg than has beeu auticipated. Affairs in Portsmouth uro p-ogrc-sing satisfactorily. The mayor appears to be the right man in the right place. Northern attorneys, located iu Richmond, are reported to have engaged in brjker.ige on the clemency of the gown -mcnt, by selling their influence of procuring executive pardon for wealthy rebels. The Herald says that the unionists of Charleston are petitioning that their cotton, rosin and tur; cutinc, which they purclnse l undo rebel rule and hid iu hope t hut at the reconstruction of the union something might be saved t.) purchase the necessaries of life, but which was seized by the United States at tlu time of the capture of the city, uay be returned to them that their families may be saved from utter destitution.
