years ago by the explosion of a powder flask while holding it in his hand.

Rain. We got a fine shower of rain in this vicinity on Tuesday last, which makes the vegetation, kc., spring up with a sceiaincr' newness of life. The wheat, oat, and corn crops have been materially benefitted by it, and look very promising. The Spring Torm of the Plymouth Free School will close to-morrow (Friday.) The Kehocl will give a Pi? Xic at the Seminary Grove iu. the afternoon, at which time parents of pupils, and the friends of education arc invited to be present. Jeff Davis' commission as a 1st lieutenant of drpgoor.?, signed, Andrew Jackson, president, and Lewis Cass, secretary of war, and dated April 10th, 1S34, to rank from March 4th, 1833, has fallen into the hand s of a mcniler of Gov. Oglesby's staff. An ,inteHiircnt" ''free American of
African descent" was the guest of a certain few of the citizens of this place last week, and edified them with his extraordinary freaks of genuine negro foolery, exacting a shinplaster frcti each of his listners every few moments, which was readily paid over. He left Mondav morning amid the tears of a few generous friends.

S. k. M. Keeker have just received an installment cf new gocds, fresh from Xew York and Philadelphia, among the lot is a new stvle of hoop skirt, which is said to excel all others. Thv ladies will of course regard them as indispensable, and purchase before they arc all gone. Ve noticed a female promenading the streets last Tuesday evening in a f fate of intoxication, fallowed bv a cro'.vd cf indiserect boys, who.-e amusement it was to use all manner of offensive language, which they knew she would resist. Nothing can be more disgusting to respectable citizens than to sec a woman an a drunken parade. A ff ecial dispatch to the X. Y. Tribune, from St. Louis 12th, says, the new Constitution is adopted. Official and scmi-
oHicial intelligen"c from Little Kock is at band showing that the soldiers' vote will settle the question in favor of the new constitution. Other papers, however, say a majority has been given against the new cuEstitution. A Xew York dispatch announces that a ydlot boat, fifty n. ilea west of Cape May, fell in with fragments of the steam transport Admiral Dupont. The Adaiiral Dupont left Xew York on the 7th for Fortress Monroe to take troops to Texa.s. Our cnterprising'oung friends, Messrs. Stitzcl and itansbury, are opening a Restaurant on the second floor of the new brick, over the hardware vtore of luck & Toan. Wc believe a good restaurant (such a one as YA. and Up. will koep) can Lc made to pay well hero; and wc are glad to know that the enterprise has fallen into hands likely to make it a permaneut institution. Success to them.
The Ice Cream and Strawberry Festival, given by the ladies of the Episcopal Church, atCorbin's Hall on Monday evening last, was a fine affair. The hall was lull enough for comfort, and all present seemed to enjoy thcni?elves very much indeed. The affair does credit to those having it in charge, autl the receipts, v.a should think, must have been cutirely satisfactory. A very pleasant affair occurred near the close of the Festival. Some one proposed to the young gentle men present to purchase a splendid boquct, arranged by Miss Palmer, and present it to the young lady who shoul 1 receive the largest number of votes, competition free for all, and votes fifteen cents each. The
j polls were closed at half past eleven o'clock.
and the votes counted, when it appeared that Miss Lou Cleavcland was the lucky young lady. The cost of the bouet was Seventy three dollars and fifty cents. Miss C. gracefully thanked her champions for the compliment, and acceped the pretty bauble in a hapry manner. This festival will lon be remembered as one of the bright spots along the rugged road of life. Tlic IauIj's rricistl. The July number of this Magr.zitic opens with an engraving appropriate to the cason, called "Ox the Cliff." It is a beautiful picture of two lovers enjoying the repose and freshness of the seashore and makes one long for the dash of thj breakers against the rocks, and the smell of the, salt waves. The Double Fashion Plate for this month is quite brilliant. Among the other engravings is the "Dridge of Sighs," and the usual number devoted to new stvlcs of dress kc. An Indianapolis dispatch of Saturday says Adjt (Jen. Terrell has been officially notified that all lb&2 regimental orrr ini-
1 zitions will be mustered out atouco. All
Indiana troops Tvill cofue here for the purpose. He is notified to make ready for their reception rvithin ten days. The bSthJTthll'thand 100th, Indiana left Washington yesterday, The 08th, L'oth. 5Sth, GGth, 48th, and 59th were publicly received to day. The St. Louis Democrat assert.? that there were immense frauds in that state in the last constitutional election, ft may be that bu.-h whackers, disloyalists, rebel sympathizers and guerrillas conspired to defeat the "loyal." If they did vote illegally, early and often, they were but imitatiug the example which "radicals have given them the past four years. They did not carry their wickedness so far as the radicals. They did not surround the polls and drive away lawful voters with bayonets. If the pjwer of the military and of the bold, bad men who have ruled thu states as with a rod of iron since the commencement of the war, is go far br
ten that their fpponcia can carry au
election, even by fraud, it argues a mucu better state of society than ha-t lately existed there. Chictiyo Time.
