THE PLYMOUTH WEEKLY DEMOCRAT. VOLUME 10.
Two Ii ad Habits. There are two wenkuesses in our hab-
its which arc very common, and which are very prejudicial to our welfare. The first is giviutr away to the case or indulgence of the moment, instead of doing at once what ought to be done. This practice almost diminishes the beneficial effects of our actions, and often lead us to abstain from action altogether: as, form.uu.e.ir.t.huo.'.r ,iVr 13 il gll'ilLLI VI 5UI1SI110C, Ol Hllliu n c ivu we ought to take advantage, but we have not the resolution to leave at'the moment a coinfurtablc seat or an attractive occupation, we miss the most favorable opportunity, and, perhaps, at last, justify our belvc'9 for remaiuing in doors on the ground that the time for exercise is past. One evil attendant upon the habit of" procrastination is, that it produces a certain dissatisfaction of the mind which impedes and deranges the animal functions, and tends to prevent the attainment of a hiuh Btate of health. A preception of what is right, followed by a promptness of execution, would render the way ol life perlectly smooth. Children should be told to do nothing but what is reasonable, but they should be taught to do what they arc told at once. The habit will stand them instead of all their lives. The second weakness is, when we have made a good resolution, and have partially failed in executing it, we are very apt to nbandon it ab together. For instance if a person who has been accustomed to rie at ten rcbolves to rise at six. and after a few suc cessful attempts happens to sleep till sev- . .1 .1.1 '11 en, there is great uanger mat nc win relapse into his former habit, or probably even go beyoad it, and lie till noor. It is the sanio with resolutions of economy or temperance, or anything el-e; if we cannot do all we intended, or make ons slip, we are apt to give up entirely. Xow, what we should aim at is, always do the best we can under existing circumstances; and then our progress, with the exception of slight interruptions, would be continual. What it Takes to Make a good Xfavspaith. We receive at this office thirteen daily newspapers, and from sixty to eighty Me-'klie?. all of which we make it a point to rend. From this mass of Labyrinth of matter, we carefully select such articles, items, gems, and tit-bits as comprise the miscellany of our columns. Each editor acts upon this principle, hence each individual paper h an epitome of the whole; and in proportion to the extent of the editor's judgment contains the quintessence of the whole. It requires more talent to make jrood selections than it does to write good leaders; hence we imagine that the pipul liity of n paper depends to a great extent on its selections. That editor is a fool who imagines he can write better on all subjects thar any of his cotcniporaries. We all have our specialities some peculiar gift in rvbieh we may excel many others. It ii the art of comhining these iritts, and culling their choicest gems. that make the readable, eagerly sought; i'jr, splendid journ;i. Snob i our idea of what a good p:; per should be; but bless us how faw of m -till the bil!.:" C'fru'u Mtrcury. I'o Keep Kjj;; M. Burnouf recommends v Lr Bilier, a French journal of agriculturel, the following method of preserving eggs: Dissolve in two thirds of warm olive oil oue third of beeswax, and cover each egg compictelj' with a thin layer of this pomade with the end of the finger. The eggshell by degrees absorbs the oil, and each of its pores becomes filled with the wax, which hermctieallv seals them. 31. Hurnouf affirms that he has eaten ggs kept two years in ibis manner, in a place not exposed to too great extremes of temperature. Ih thinks also that germs may in this manr.cr be preserved for a lon time. Rcvcrdy und ien. A'c Lave a pretty ftll report of the remarks nf the Hon. Uovcrdy Johnson before the military commission enaeJ in trying the alleged accomplices of Booth, the as-us"n. and we cjii ieo nothing in vhat ho snid justifying the ohservation of fcnerai Hunter about '"the humbug chivalrj' of the south." Mr. Johnson is not identifiol with that chivalry, and Gen Hunter's utterance was uncalled for, undignified, and want nly insolent. If there ia any man iu the Tnited States, who assumes to be a military man, who is a greater humbug than Hunter, he has not been heard of; and Reverdy Johnson is a lawyer who could : fiord to tell that court that he was" competent to form a profesfcionai opinion Gi'jcinnati ('oinmercial. 1 naiitfci'ous E'ractlcr. It is jrencrally believed that Coal Oil will not explode and such is perhaps the tact, but the jras that result from heating the oil is explosive and many accidents hare resulted from explosions of this gas. Vhen the oil in a lamp has nearly all leen burned up, leavinsr tho howl of the lamp !n;ost empty, the heat volatilizes the gas of the oil, and the dangerous practice consists on blowing into the top of the chiraaey to put out tho li.ht. The flame is driven by the breath down into the gas and an explosion results. Turn down the wi-rk and let it go out itsclt. A nobleman once, asked a clergyman, who was dining at tho bottom of the'tab'e, why the goose was always placed next to the parson 'i 'Really,' said he, 'I eau give no reason for it, but your question is so odd that I frhall never roe a goose again without thinking of your lordship.' A gentleman whese wife inflicts upon him, every Fcason, two or three immense evening parties, was standing, on one of thoe occasions, in a very forlorn condition, leaning against the chimney piece, when a gentleman, coming tip to .him, s?aid: Sir, as neither of us are acquainted here, I think we had better go homo An exchai ge paper says, that the t'rls in some party of Pennsylvania are ?o hard up for husband., tlut thej sometime take ur with printer? and lawyer!1.
