Raising Calves. Suppose the calf takes one half the milk of a pood cow for ninety davs. what will he cus-t nt that age, with butter at vO cents a pound t Only the moderate li tie sum of about 8-2 50. leather a costly calf, Mr. Shattuck of Xcrvrich, X. Y., thinks ; and lest farmers be deterred from raising calves altogether, he gives the following process, in" the Country Gentleman, as one by which ' th-?y may be raised much cheaper : In the first place lot tc calf remain with the cow for two or three (lavs: then put him away by himself. The calf is usuilly tied with a rope, or pi:t in stanchions, at feeding time, and in learnirg it to drink by putting the hand oa the nose and pressing the fore fintrcr on the end near hi moutli, he will reach out Ins tongue, get a tac of the milk, and learn very readily to drink from the pail. 1 t jixetimes feed new milk for a day or two, then lot the milk stand twelve hour?, take eff the cream, warm the milk, and fe;d to the calf for a vrcek or so; then let it stand twenty-four hours,, being cartful not to feed too much so as to loosen the bowe!; and after t lie c-df pets to be four to six weeks old, it will eat almost any thiol' von irive him. 1 prefer to keep them up in the stable or small yard, until thej- arc two cr three mouths old, and give them what hay they will eat, as this treatment keeps the bowels more regular than to let them run to gras. I Had snnll quantity cf oil cake meal a very good addition, for a mouth or two at first. A little dry clay, 1 think, very good for them to lap occasionally where they are kept conuced. I have seen m.my calves raised in this wav, and have raed a crcat manv pood t ues myself. 1 du not pre tend that a calf raised on pkimued miik will look as fine as those raised on new milk, Lut I claim that you c-n raise very good one and far more cconotuiealiv. and esreciallv in the dairv districts where we have a large quantity of miik to feed. One very essential joint, in raising calves ia this way. is to feed each calf by itself. I have alwajs notbed where a lot of calves were fed together in a lomr trough, there would le iome very poor ones, and that U owing to some drinking faster than other;. T!ie Uult Jiinan and Ui& Rcb.
