We have not learned whether they have taken any steps to build a new jail, or even to render the old one more secure. The erand jury reports it unfit for the safe keeping of prisoners, regularly twice a year, yet nothing has been done to remedy the evil. A go'-d substantial jail is much needed in this county. In assuming control of this paper the publisher wishes to say a few words to the democracy, upon whom we must rely for support, in regard to the duty they owe their county paper. It is needless to say
that printing materials arc cxccssively high; all know that to be a fact, and thercfore our friends must know that with the ..... present low rates of subscription it will . 1 . rcouire souc cftort on their rart m the 1 . . . way of assisting to increase the circula tion of tho paper, as well as our own labors, to make the Democrat such a paper as the publisher would desire. Our circulation should be increased by an addition of three hundred cah paj iug subscribers; and this can be done by a little exertion on the part of tho.se who are now taking the paper VII true democrats should be interested in tho success of their party organ, and if they would maintain the principles of democracy successfully if they expect to aid in the final overthrow of the present ruinous and corrupt policies of a tyrannical administration, they must ot set silent, as idle spe ctators, who have no interest at stake or no duty to perform.
