THE PLYMOUTH WEEKLY DEMOCRAT.
A Qomance or Iho Draft "Great Expectation" Verified. From the St. Lonis Republican. One of tlif ealiest names dran in the Fourth Ward nas that of a young man who recently ccüuasüced business in this city, and who Dot long previously, was married to a youDg lady of very respectable parodU. At about noon of the day on which the publication of the list ia which his name appeared, he was notified by one of the substitute agents of the fact that money was on deposit with, him (the agent) to pay frr his (the young luan'e) substitute; and before the day was exhausted the substitute wa procuroi, the young man received his exemption papers, and returned to his grief stricken wife. The sum paid was $800. This seeming eccentric proceeding was not arry great cause of perplexity to our friend, inasmuch as he had from his youth, from his very cradle, indeed, been the recipient of bounties from an unknown source bv which he had been supported through his totteriug infancy, impetuous youth, and collegiate course haviDgbeen left an orphan by the ravages of the chol era in 1848, and placed in one of the benevolent institutions of this city. lie was put in the best schools as soon as he arrived at a p.oper age, and ever since ha? been supplied with sufficiencies of means for all reasonable demands; the institution which guarded his infancy being the trustee of the funds. All that he was ever able to ascertain, as to the author of this siugular beneficenco was that it came from a near relative, and under such circumstances as could not be disclosed to him. Since commencing business he had been able to live independentlv. and whatever surus-he ras informed of boing placed to his credit at his alina mater, he generously donated to the charity fund. Bat when he was drafted his hopes of the future became clouded. Hi wife wept upon his bosom, and his heirt tmk within him at the prospect..Too poor to pay a substitute he saw nothing UPt to him W to be put into the front and fight, perhaps die, just us life was blooming into the glory of n spring time. Under these circumstances, the notification referred to, as may be readily suspected, produced the wildest emotions of joy. and brought the suns'aine back, to tha young and despondent couple. Bat the strange part of the story is yet to be told; and it partakes eohighlv of the romantic that we are loth to selate the facta ag they came to us, without being permitted to refer to the excellent authoritv with which they came to us. Nisrht before last two days after the cxainiuation of the vounir man at about ihc hour of nine, a carriage drove up to the door of his residence, the drivsr of which, after ringing :nd entering, placed the fjlio'.Ting note in ur here's hand: "October 21, 1561. "Come with the bearer of this. A dyinp friend wishes ta see yoa. Bj quick , or jou may be too late." Bidding his wife adieu, telling her busine?s called him away for a short time, he s'epped into the carriage, which rolled away, and after driving for near haif an hoar, stopped in front of a comfortable looking .suburban cottage. Iu a few momints he was uhured ir.to a rooui in which wai every evidence of a tasteful but modest luxury. On a low couch in the centre of the room, lay an emaciated woman of perhaps forty years of age, who roused fro:.j r-n unrestful doze opened her languid eyes ami looked upot. the young man as he neare J her. A wild, peculiar expression lit up her countenance, a::d ?he .seemed deeply affected. But the iiitcr7ii -as fhort. for
her strength was fast failing, fc'aid she : 'George. I am dying. You are my ?on. I have been wicked but suffering has purified me; ml booau?e I a.u worthy to hope ror Clod's forgiveness I have sent for you to-night to J-ee you and lot you know the Mystery ami history of your life. Father , who h here v.-ill tell you all. I luve supported you all your life, and lo ioe you are indebted fr your exemption from the draft. All I osk i that you will rot cur.? the memory of your inother. Tor vear- I have lived secluded and crd;ivotcl to retrieve the errors of other days. Be virtuous." The dying woman had become exhausted beyond the power of utterance, and not long after-br:ath .:d her last. The young man learned that hc had been a notorious character in this citv; was divorced from her hu.sbaud .shortly after her 5ous birth, the father Laving, dud about two years utter, previously placing thi hoy ia. the orphan asylum spoken of. Knowing the whereabout. of her sou, however, she superintended his education and furnished means for hi jooper maiaUiaancc by her sinful C07T53-, but at last dyine in the hope of a happy future.
