THE PLYMOUTH WEEKLY DEMOCRAT. NUMBER 4
Who owns tlic South f Five minutes conversation with an Abolitionist will reveal to you the fact that he
conceives that the people of the North ac tually own the people of the South, and that it is nothing short of the most unparallelled presumption for them to suppose that they have any right to houe, land or estate, much le3 to that of self-govern-mint. "These men arc so intractable,, pay they, 4;so bitter, ?o determined, that there 'will be no living with them in the fature. Wc must exterminate them and pcizc their property." This highly humane and Christian conclusion is reached with the most perfect coolness and composure. Of course, why should it not be M ? Are wo not more civilized than they ? Are we not more intelligent ? Do wc not exceed them in all the humane and gentler virtues ? In a word, are wc not the eainta, and does not the earth belong to the saints? Surely it docs. Erg?, the South belongs to us, and so long as we can print Greenbacks and buy people to do our fighting for U3, ?o long wc will keep up this war of extermination. "Wc do not expect to conquer them, but we hav; two or. three to their one, and 'vith Generals who arc willing to turn wholesale butchers, wc can "wipe them out," in the impressive hnguagc used on Shcr.nan's raid. This is the programme now adopted. The war is one simply for extermination. It Is waged for that purpose. The idea of being able to conquer the South has long incc been abandoned. It is simply a cold, cruel war of bitter extermination. There is not even one spark of generosity to soften it3 composition of malignity, cruelty and slaughter. Over the heads ol the men fighting more bravely than men ever fought, hang the vile threat of negro equality and the confiscation of all their property, and yet people profess to wonder why they are so bitter ! This is like knocking a man down, beating him nearly to death, stealing his clothes and leaving him by the roadside in a pitiless storm, and then wondering -vhy he does not bvc and embrace m! If these reorlc who arc uririnc: ca this crusade of slaughter, would sit down calmly for five minutes and ask themselves how they would like the same measures meted out to them, they could not deceive themselves longer, unless, as is most likely, they Trlshcd to be dcccivcJ. 2itxo York Day -Book' A Neg;io Victim of the Draft Ilcnv IIe Felt The Lacrosse (Wisconsin) Democrat, a place where they have lately been drafting, says: Ainonpr the victims of the draf: in this city, was am, n graceful motioned contraband who was "given leave to leave the South last spring and become a free man -up Norf!" Early in I me spring nc did chorea at the Ilarnng ton House. Later in the season he hoe-I garden?, got married, and blacked the stoves t'll they riva'ed the glosa on his cheeks. Monday he waa dratted, and on Tuesday served with a notice to be at the rendezvous within t:n days along with his white brethren, or be considered a deserter. He took the notice to a friend, who read it, and raide him understand the nature thereof. And this is the way he took on: -Wat wat wat dumb foolish ting am dis. yeah ? Ise a free man ! Las' spring dey send me up Norf and tell me Ie a free man d.id dc Limcum sojers hab iiVrated me. Now wat am dis dumb foolish thing for? I'll dun gon for if Isc got to gwino to dis yeah wah. A nigger don't stand no show clown dah now. He pet shut of hesef right ofT I reckon ! If I'd kno.v wat dat pi Intel ting was I'd frow him dewn in dc strct jia like dis, (he threw the notice into the street with a jerk.) an den der neber fool dis nigeer ! Why did n't dey let de nigger stay dare or stay A Roftoii Convention. The following highly important dispatch appeared in our telegraphic report yesterday morning: "A Mass State Convention was called at Beaufort, Smth Carolina, for the 17th ot ' May, to select delegates to the UrJtimorc Coavcauon.
