VOLUME 9. THE PLYMOUTH WEEKLY DEMOCRAT. NUMBER 3G
A Moment of Horror. The Mobile Rejistcr U answerable for the following: About twenty-three years ago Jake Willard had cultivated the soil of Baldwin county, and drawn therefrom a support for
himself and wife. He is childlesi. Not Ions ajro Jake left the house in search of a missing cow. His route led him thro' an old worn out path of clay land, of about six acres in extent, in the center of which was a well twenty-five or thirty feet deep, that at some time probably had furnished the inhabitants of a ruined house near by with water. In passing the spot an ill-wind lifted Jake's hat from his head and malicit U wafted it to the edge of the well, anu tumbled, catlumix. Xow Jack had always practiced the virtue of economy, and he immediately set about the recovery of the lost hat. He ran to the well and finding that it was dry at the bottom, he uncoiled the rope which he had brought for the purpose of capturing the truant cow, and after several attempts to catch the hat with a noose, he concluded to save time by going down into the well himself. To accomplish thi-, he made one end of the rope fast to a stump close by, and ras quickly on his way down into the well. It was a fact of vliicliJake was no more oblivious than the reader hereof, that Ned Wells was in the ruined building aforesaid, an old blind horse with a bell oa his neck, who had b-jen turned out to die, was lazily grazing within a short distance of the well. The devil himself, or some other wicked spirit, put it into Ned's cranium to have a little fun; so he quickly slipped up to the old horse and unbuckling the bell strap approaching with a slow and measured "ting-a-ling4' to the edge of the well. "Dang that old blind horse," said Jake. 4,hcs coming this way, sure, and haint got no more sense than to fall in here. Whoa, liaiir But the continued approach of the ting-n-ling, said just as plainly as words that Kall would'nt whoa. Reside, Jake was at the bottom, resting before tryiug to "fdiin it" up the rope. I "Great Jeru-aletii." said Jake, '-the confoundcl oM cuss iil Le & top of me before I can &ay J?ck Kouiu.n. Vlioa, daii you. whoa Just then Xed drew up to the c-de of the rell, and with nis foot kickt d a little dirt ia to it. "Oh ! LoH, exclaimed Jake, falling upon his knees at the hortom. "I'm gone now; Trhca !. Xow I lay inc down to sleep whoa Ball! I pray the hrl ray soul to whoa, now. Oh, Lvrd have ruercv on me!" Ned could hold in lo lonircr, and fearing that Jake might suffer from his fright, revealed himself. Prohahly Xed didn't make traeks with hb heels from that well. Maybe Juke ! . 1. 1 . .1 . 1 . A Victimized I'arcnt A good juke was perpetrated by a lady at Jamaica, Lonjj Island, a few days ago, which is too good too keep. One of the citizens of that place went to answer a ring of the doer bell at the request of his wife, where he found a basket in which was a beautiful eliild about five mouths old. The gentleman carried it into the house. where one of the lady visitors took up the baby, and found a note pinned to its dress, which charged the gentleman with bcin"1 its father aud implored him to support it. A rich scene ensued between the injured wife and indignant hur-band, the latter denying all knowledge of the little one. The friends interfered, and at last the wife wns inaucea to lorgivc tier husband, though he 1 . . . . . . . . i ptuck to it that he had always been a faith ful husband. Finally tho lady very roguishly told him ho did not know his own child, for it was their mutual offspring which had just been taken from the cradle for the purpose of playing the joke.
