M AN V CITIZENS. To follow the fashitn, we must make a b v to our r aöVr, .-s we are introduced in this depart iiient of the Democrat, over the destinies of which we s-hall j ro.-ulc for the rre?ent. We will not r. ttemjt anything very gr ind, as this column is not one of vital importance to the country or party, and w e have in aversion to making "much ado nbont tioth'ng." We intend, a? Loa to UA about ip, whit we can, and print what we wish to. With no am ;ition to !;.-t.i :gMi -.a ouMelve, we sh-.ill meretv , . , ... .. ",. t-ndeavor to keep pa-.'e with tue lap.J current oi ; evcats that render our viil-igu ?o remaikaSle. IliU week we r.iiy h ive a cid-srn i of Local, next j week we may bo n-doccd to notice of De Land'? Salerstus and FaiihankN ?c;ile. Whatever we have, or can procure lor our readers, shall be j fully tlieir', further we cannot promise. When we have occasi n to introduce poliiical af fairs into our column we shall always be found in the serv:ce of the Democracy, untain'ed with fusion cf any kind. As a gentleman we shall treat ad with whom we have any totere u ne, in a courteous manner, and will pledge ournelvos that oarcoluma shall never be made a medium for Billingsgate wl.ing In all thing else we wil! endeavor to "keep up w'.tUthe processitn." "V;ir ITffcctiJif;. Pursuant to a cmI!, published in lat week. Re rcBuciN, a war meeting was held at the Cour House Satn-'ny afternoon. The house wa.s well filled, an.i addressed, first by Mr. A. IVller, who m ide a very good speech, with nothing ob jectionable in it, and which was calculated to have a good effect. Iext by Mr. Gordon, a non-resi-dent, wh spoke short time and wa3 compelled to stop on account of his lung3. Dr. Siiemin fo. low. d with a patriotic speech. Sa far everythiu went off finely, and the object of the meeting bid fair to be accomplished. Biit now the colored "man and brother' comes in, ani "Harmony, affrighted takes her flight." When the wearied Mr. floRDO took his scat we sympathized with him. II obtained our sympathy under false pretenses. It was a weakness of the brain, instead of lungs, thit produced his inakility to proceed in hi? first effort. He is fcow refreshed, and on his favorite theme makes another effort. He said he used to be a Democrat, but was one no longer, and then proceeded to denounc the eth of January Convention, and proved conclusively that all its defenders were secessionist. What he said is im material, suffice it to Bay, he said nothing to induca me.i to enlist, and many things to embitter a portion of Ida audience, and deter them from doing bo. Before he concluded we left, but understand after he v oncludtd, Mr. W. M. Patterson attempted to address tiie audien je, but a majority were in too happy a frame oi cled to desire anything farther, and took an iuforrr.il adjourn me t. Now this thing is not as it should be; such meetings itioul'l be kept entirely free fron all partyim. The recruiting lieutenants deplore such things, aud do not need the services of politicians, in getting up their companies. Atrociou. Last Frid iy evening constable Wolf was called upon to summons a coronors jury to et upon the body of an infant, found dead. The jury, afterin vestiutiLg the matter, found a verdict that the child come to its death by pome means unknown to them. The deed waj most horrible and unnatural, and while, from the facts before u, we can give no opiu;on as the perpetrator, we can urgo that vigorous measures be taken to bring him or Ler to justice. Such an aflVtir shoud not be passed over ligMly. ric-Mc. The young and old of our place, to the numb-ir Of about forty fouIs, assembled at a romantic and beautif d ?pot about half a mile from town, with dinner baskets at hand, iu search of pleasure, relief from business and the monotony of every day life. With dancing, singing, romping lc , the afternoon passed very pleasantly, and the refreshments were very fine we are informed. In the evening a quiet little danc at Corlin'ä Hall concluded the day's recreation.
Thk present subscribers cf the Democrat will r
ceive their papers as heretofore, unless diseontin- , ! ued by request. We should be happy to retain all our present subscribers, with as many new ones I desire to sec the Democratic paper supported in " I I V'e are informed that the rumor prevailing out arid burned to the ground and th.it their rui. a oc- ' casioned the smoky days last week, is incorrect To era Patrons, We wish to pay that after this issue we shall make a change in the mechanical appearance of the Democrat, by taking out a few columns of advertisements, and substituting reading matter therefor. Wo will give as much reading matter as we can possibly afford, but as the main support of the office comts from advertisements, of course we cannot exclude them. D. E. Vanvalkenburgii ha3 removed his Law Office to the front room of the Democrat office, where he will be happ) t gee all wishing to transact legal business with hi in. We call attention to the announcement of the name of Sheriff Baknhru. II has made a good Sheriff, and if we cannot have a Democrat for Treasurer, Mr. Harnard will be vur next choice. Enlisting is going on finely in this County. W. M. Kendall ha9 aboi t forty Lames. M. II. Tidbits has received a recruiting lieutenants commision, and ha twenty recruits. J. W. Hoinjhton U also appointed recruiting lieutenant, and has about forty men. We call attention to the Peace man not piece of ft man as you wili learn if jon call on him. He is as fair and liberal as an honest man can be We regret to learn that our accomplished musical friend, Miss Morlet, leaves our place to -day. Fairbanks Scales, Weighed in the balance of a just criticism, all are obliged to admit thatthe scales of Fairbanks k Co. are, without exception, the best ever invented. We know whereof we affirm, beciu.se we have tested their value, and are fully satisfied of their superior merits. The introduction of these scales have wrought a revolution iu the transaction of various business, and their accuracy is such that a uniformity in weights has been established jail over the country, thus making them a. national, legalized standard. .Nor are they conGned to the l-'rited Stales: thev have found their way to a!mo?t e,,.ry p.m of the civilized world, and are adapted , 3 sl.indarj3 0f fi countries, so that it may be uid. all nations, if not - weiche! in theje balanres," at least weigh by them.
