McDONALD, as a candidate for the nomination f Towr.ship Trustee before the Democratic conTfRt:on, tobe held at the Court House next Saturday. The Mnttintjlj-Johmon Embroxlio. it will be remembered, that in our Issue of the 0th of February, we gave what purported to be a true statement of the cause of the resignation of W. II. II. Mattixgly, ns 1st Lieutenant of Company D, Olb Reg't Ind. Vols. The reason we gave wis, that about eighty of his Company had sig ed a petition asking him to resign. To thia statement he took exception, and in & lengthy article which wai published in our issue of the Cth inst , stated, at a reason that we were mistaken in the number who signed the petition, that there were but 77 raa of his Company at Rowlcsburg at the time the petition wag said to have been circulated. We jjave the number as we heard it; but it now appears that there were only 6 i ! instead of cO, petitioners fr Li resignation. And as there were, according to his own statement, but 77 in the Company, only C4 of whom petitioned for his resignation, it can he peen how immensely popular he was with his Company ! The petition was not signed by the Captain or 21 Lieutenant, although their Bilence in the matter was not designed V y them to be complimentary to hi:n. According to the facts in the ri?c, then, it i ; rRomri.E t!it there were eleven ir. t'. f Company, including himself, who were his fricu'is. W;.en we pulishcd Mattlngly'a article, we intimated that a replf to it miirht be expected from ir;e of t'.e members of Company I); that reply has been received, and we are happy to lay it bef o..r fader?, as it settles the question beyond Ci.r--.te. II.-r ? It 13 Ts Mvri i r, 1 i.vw, Mar"u 11th, Vi'e ii.jiicc i'i the last issue of your paper an arfrom tl-.? pen of W. II. II. Mattinaly, de-ri-tt ,ry to Capt Johnson. That the people of t'.e 'v.ritv may know the facts, we give them. !;.nr:i.-ii;ircl aft-r Mattlnslv's return from bom toti.e Company, hf? comratneed trying to under in'n t.e Captain, by hav:i: a p tit"nn secretly cr.-ida'e 1 . kin lt hinx to resign. The Company, onfndinit out, unan::nuIy en lorsed the Captin, exepting only five or six. And we can Fay t:.4t iL, r- h r:ol a Captain in the Regiment more popu'ar with his men than ('apt. Jolinson. We Vn'w M:tirgly to be guilty of as grat blunders ia rq udto his oüicc as Captain Johnson. Mtt'Ci's tatenient that Captain Johnson appealed to th Com- any with tear in hi eyes, to retain .'m Jj f . 1 U ..;.! :e .1. I i kil tu luiiiiiii, uc ram it mc wtjzi w'''P'l him to resign he would do so. It is genorA.ly uiidrrst xd in the Company that Mattingiy m s.tr th Captaincy. And as for Company D fcin? thft laughing stock of th.j Regiment, we iio it to be 1 ilse, and he knows the same. I lis M"II drilled a Cnnriany as any in the Regiment. To show how Mattingiy stoo l in th Company, we ' .-ud a copy of t!te jetition for him to resign. Ho.'.ing th above article will place the affair in JU true light, we remain Yours, Truly, G F.O. II. WILBUR, D. B. ARMSTRONG, HENRY HEISER. fcorv. RowcLdbCRG, Feb. 1st, 1"C2. -1, the'underMgned, members of Company D, thereby reimest W. II. II. M.Uti.ngly to resign position as Firt Lieutenant, for Tariou.s rea-ti-i; tli first and strongest is he has entered int. conspiracy with other members of said Company to "Ifprive our Captain of hi office; we therefore heve that a man oifering such imlignity to his Ii HriorolTiccrhould no longer remiin in the oti'.u whieh 'ne now occupies.
