e take pleasure in laying the following coml. . : , .. .... ,. munication, in reference to an article published in , , , . tlns paper two weeks ago, before our readers. ...... , . . . . Although it is a source of inter.se mortification to us. we confess our inability to see wherein the writer makes a "point." He does not deny our statement that he was instrumental in drawing up a petition for Capt. Johniou to resign; neither i does he contradict the statement that a petition ; was raised requesting "Lieutenant Mattingly" to resign. His remarks derogatory of Capt. Johnsoa j hare, we apprehend, no particular revelancy to j the suhject under discussion; and if ri.T of the j statements again- that officer are incorrect, we , presume they will be answered in due season.-Eo. Mr. Editor: In your issue of the 20th ult., there was an article which doe me great injustice, und which I am not willing to pass unnoticed. From facts in my poses.--io:i, I am lead to believe that you spoke according to your information, ami not from a desir to injure me. The article referred to charges El with entertahri:g a desire to become Captain of Co. I), lth ; Ind. Heg., and that for this purpose I circulated a ' petition requesting Captain Johnson to resign. ' The right of petition will not be denied, audita' . ' . ..I . , ,i ,,i r . , r precedent is wanted, I will state that the aforesaid ; . . . ... . .-. ' Captain signed, and was active m procuting otner ,-,!.' signatures, to a petition requesting Col. Moody to , avocate" his position. -Wiiit is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander." I am accused of ambition. Iftuchwa my motive I would doubtless have been grievously disappointed in the result. It is the practice of the Olli Regiment to waive the right of promotion, and fill all vacancies which may occur bv an election. I had been ?"ck and at home from the 20th of Octoher to the 11th of January, while the Orderly Sergeant had Wen with the Company all the time, had proved himself competent for the poition, and had a vacancy occurred, would have been elected Captain in spite of anything I could hare done. I should, myself. Lave favored h promotion, in order to divest the project of anything that looked like ambition on my part, and it would have required the utmost "unamity" (to quote the language of my late commander) to have induced me to accept the j osilion under the circumstances. Indeed, had I yearned for the place nnd its many respondhilitiv., I should have bided my time, and waited until I could have distinguished myself, and gained the affections of the men, many of whom are comparatively stranger to me. The petition referred to merely stated that Cartaiu Johnson was incompetent, "thai his experience of five months had availed him noth ng; that he continually exposed us to mortification by his ii.excusable blunders, made under mot aggravating circumstances, and at times when all were animated with a desira to emulate other Companies in perfection of drill. As a proof of this, he did not le;irn, until recently, how to Form Company' wht;i marching by platoon-", and then not until p-eially instructed by the f 'mriMiiiliii Olhcer, in the presence of the whole hattallion, a piec of information simple in itself, and in the possession of the niot inattentive o' our number, privates as well as olücers " It id trr.e that I knew him to b a most notorious blunderer at home, and had jour authority, Mr. Editor, for syin that whenever he opened I. is mouth the lne of Lindley Murray rallied in the pr.ive ; hut I supposnl him capable of learning, or I never ."houIJ h.ve accepted a secondary position uiitJer hin. He has !i.tl oipnrtnritr, and does actuallv study, but the more he stirpes iho less he seems to know. Tliose commands which lie does give properly arj stereotyped, and if fi;iniin-d before a military boird and compelled to execute hit own orders, 14 saltpetre wouldn't save him." Tho petition wa circulated a short time, and received about twenty-fve signatures, including many of tho. ui ;ig whom jTomotion must hereafter take ! r.i, if any attention is paid to fitness and acqu i .ance with the drill. Capt. Johnson did not wuit for Iiis friends to move in the matter, but drew up a remonntrancrt airain-t hi own resignation ; then with tea' tu! eyes he addressed the men, appealing to their sympathies, and imploring their derision in his favor, and many, out of compaMon, igned his paper. Finding tl.at the majority had concluded to retain him. ! could not find it in my power to stifle my elf rcspect Hiitüciently to play second fid lie to a mm whone blunders iu tie him the liucrhiiig tork of the reimnt. and who occupation of any office is a ftigma on the j iotellience of tho.v who placed him tlire. To j hw tHat I lo not underrate his e pa ity, f thin it would be a good idea to send hint an Comnjisifjer across the "Pot-o m.c," whe.e Ks n'rine jirgon might lea-1 the "re bels" to suppose that irie foreign nation had allied itself niih the United States, in order to cruh out the rebellion and '4ACfjuiece more territory. If the rebe' (General, Hardee, Die author of the"pret-nt system of tactics, is ever capture!, it would be a cruel, but deserved punL-hnicnt, to eompt'l him to l:ten while Johnn drills hi Company, two hours each ! rw- I .t I i.: If I
