Another great battle. 2,500 SLAIN. Precipitate Retreat of the Federal Forces! Washington, July 22. The South is now gaining a great victory at Manassas Junction, and will eventually repulse our troops with great loss. Federal troops retreating to Washington with rear well covered by a good column. Our loss 2500! The fortifications around Washington strongly reinforced by fresh troops. Mnny confused statements are prevalent but enough is known to warrant the statement that we have suffered in a degree which has cast a gloom over the remnants of the army, and the deepest melancholy over Washington. We were advancing and taking their masked batteries gradually but surely by driving the enemy toward Manassas. when they seemed to have received reinforcements. Gen. Johnston took command, and commenced driving us back, when a panic among our troops suddenly occurred and a regular stampede took place. It is thought that Gen. McDowell undertook to make a stand about Centerville, bat the panic was so fearful that the whole army became demoralized, and it was impossible to check them. Our forces were in full retreat. Large numbers of our troops full by the way-side from sheer exhaustion. The road from Bulls Run was strewed with knapsacks, &e Many of our troops deliberately threw away their arms, the better to facilitate their retreat. Gen. McDowell was in the rear of the retreat exerting himself to rally Ms men but only with partial effect. The latter part of the army made their retreat in order. McDowel's orders did not at all times reach persons for whom they were intended. The force sent against our troops, according to prisoner's statements, was about 30,000 men, inclusive of a large , number of cavalry. He further says that owing to reinforcement from Richmond, Straasburgh, and other points, the ene. my a force was 90,000 men. According to statements of two Fire Zouaves, they have only about 200 left from the slaughter. The 69th and other regiments suffered frightfully in killed and wounded. All provisions belonging to us are saved. Gen. Mansfield takes command on other side of river, and will be able to hold the works against any force the enemy can bring against them. Rifled cannon are being sent forward.

The Norfolk V.t Day-Book says : We learn that on Thursday last, two of the dead bodies of Lincoln's men were found in the woo U in tha neighborhood of the Bethel battle-ground, in a state of de composition. They were traced out by roeacs of the buzzards hovering over the pot. One of the corpses had in his haversack a quarter of a baked shoat. It is supposed that ihey had crawled away frcm the scene of battle after being wounded, and died in the position in which they were discovered. From their uniforms it j pesumed lhat they were members of the Zouav regiment. The Repub lican3 now hold all ihe oifices. ihey have control ot every department of the gov ernment, both State and National, am! they manifest a disposition to show their power by making every person "walk the chalk. A great many things are now 'dearly decided by the irrepressibles to be treason, and since treason is one of the highest offences known to the law, the people should be advised as to what con stiiutes it. It U treason to say anything against Abraham Lincoln, or to object to ti e pol icy or rectitude of anything he ever has done, is now doing, or ever will do. It is treason to say anything arrainst the Abolitionists, or to intimate that in 185G the Fremonlers cariid Has w.ih but six teen stars, representing the fcixieeu northern States. Ilia treason to say that the Republican Consul-General at Montreal was, about lß-12, expelled from Congress for offering resolutions in favcr of a dissolution of the Union, or to intimate that Banks and Caskey were willing to let the Union slide. It is treason to i.itirnate that M tssachu setts, in 1G!G. passed an act of secession because of the admission of Texas; or that on the 12th of January, I C IS. Abraham Lincoln made a fpeech in which he sustained the right of secession. It is treas-on to speak of the thieving, villainous transactions of Republican of tii ials who are lining their pockets by robbing the tax payers and starving and plundering the brave and patriotic soldiers who are now in the field to defend their country's flag and sustain the government. It is treason to favor compromise and the settlement of our troubles at the earliest possible moment peaceably if they can be to settled forcibly if nothing else will do. It is treason to say that the incessant warfare of Northern fanatics and abolition preach rs against slavery had anything to do wiih bringing about our present national troubles. ft - . . M ., July 19, 1GG1. To the People of Soxthern Jfissouri : By viriu-i of the proper authoiiiy I have nasumed command in Northern Missour.. I appear among you with a force strong enough to maintain the authority of the Government, and too strong to ba resisted by any means in your possession usual in warfaie. Upon your own assurancees that you would respect the laws of the United States and preserve the peace, no troops hvo hitherto been sent into your section of the country. Tho occurrences of the last ten days, however, have plainly exhibited that you lack either tin power or inclinalio 1 to fulfill your pledges, and the Government has therefore found It necessary to occupy Northern Missouri with a force pcweiful enough to compel obedience to the laws. So soon as it is made manifest that you will respect its authoiiiy and put down the unlawful combinations against it, you will be relieved of ihn presence of :he forces under my command, but not until then. 1 therefore warn all persons taken ii. arms against the Federal authority, who at' tempt to commit depredations upon public or privalo proper', or who mole? un olfending and peaceful citizens, that thy will be dealt with in the most summary manner, wi'hout awaiting civil process. The Commissioneis do not by any means intend that the co-operation of the French government in und a mat ter bhould have the slightest alliniiy to an official reeogniiiou of the Southern Confederacy. In the flitting of the AuMrian Chamber of Deputies on the 27th of June, M. i'ulzer put a question to the Ministry as to how far Austrian merchant vessels might rely on the projection of the navy during the American conflict, and what force the government intended to fit out for lhat pur pose?
