On the south side of th river a number of dwellings have been erected, aid a splendid, and we may add, a much needed, bridge is in course of construction. The whole town bears evidtace of prosperity. Sad Ntwjj. We were pained yesterday evening to hear of the death of Mi Loeisba liaicGS, for R-veral years a resident of this place. She died in Wooster, New York, on the 8th inst. She was a most estimable young woman, and the newg of her death willbriag sadness to the hearta ef her i many inend ,!Cre and elsewhere. The Knox Mails. Since the mail route from hereto Knox has been discontinued, there ia not Htueh certaintv or regularity in the mails from there here, sad we fear, fron here there. In three or four instances we have received Mail matter from there that was a week eld, or, one week after it wa mailed. This in smoying to both our frikidk and ourself, but we suppose the matter cannot be helped. Friexd Thompson : Without doubt "Old Abe " to-day, ia President. His inaugural is looked far with intense anxiety by the people of this Union, all being anxious to know what his course will be in in regard to the seceding States and the public pmpfirty r,av in dipute ia those States. The Republicans of cur little town are impatiently waiting for " Old Abe " to swing his deeapitatiu axe and drop off the head ef our old friend Porter, our old and tried Postmaster, and install one of their run ilk in his stead. Last Saturday afternoon, the Republican" here hId an election (accordiag to the instructions of P. M. GENERAL (?) Colfix,) aud it resulted in tho election of Samuel Boaty, Esq. There were but t.v candidates voted for, K. S. Cole, Esq., and Samuel Beatv, the vote htood as follows : S Peaty IP, E. S Cole 2. Mr. Peaty will make a good Postmaster, and if we must haw a change, perhaps they could not have made a better selection. The Southern Confederacy. Montgomery, March 12. Tho injunction of freedom having been removed therefrom, I am able to send a synopsis of the peimaiiHiit Constitution of the Confederate Slates. The following are its principal features : No person who is foreign and not a eitizen ef the Cttifuderatc States, is allowed to vote for any otlicer, civil or political. State or Federal, under the first census. South Carolina is entitled to five Representative in Congress ; Georgia, ten ; Alabama, nine; Florida, two; Mississippi, seven; Louisiana, six ; Texas, six ; and each State to two Senators. The State Legislati. re may impeach judicial or federal ollicera resident or acting in said State, by a tVO-th'ird VOtC. Poth Houses of Congress may grant seats on the floor to either of the principal otlicers of each of the Executive Departments, with the privilege of dircu-ising tho measures of his particular Department. Representation n the basis of three fifths for slaves is continued. Congresj is not allowed, through duties, to foster any branch of industry. The foreign slave trade is prohibited. Congress is prohibited from making any appro priatinns, unless by a vote of two thirds of both Houses, except that the appropriation be asked by the head of some Department, or by the President. No extra compensation is to)be? allowed to any contractor, o.'licer, or agent, after the contract is made or the service rendered. All law shall relate to one subject and be exprcsätnl by letter. The President and Yice President are to hold office for six years. The principal officers of departments, and the diplomatic service, are removable at the pleasure of the President.
