THE PLYMOUTH DEMOCRAT. A. C. THOMPSON, ::::::::: Editor.
PLYMOUTH, INDIANA: THURSDAY MORNING.NOY. 22. Lincoln'3 Election How received, The election of Lincoln w.is rather an unexpected result, even to his supporters, until within a few days before the election, and considering the great victory the party has gained they have made but a very few small demonstrations. There has been no such rejoicing as we Douglas men would have gotten up had w elected him. At Xeiv Orleans Douglas though beater, h-a, sine the result was known, had a reception that was larger and more entlitistnctis fln anv lt rrmH sf rat ion that ha9 bn cotton nnowr the election of Lin- ...... V . -t.a.c of some of the Southern States, and those Deni.n'rats who predicted that such would b the cas in tho event of Lincoln's election, were called "grannies hi pantaloons," : but now that secession is almost certain, we hear no more about t'..e cry of 'wolf,' secessi u and electioneering hobby nor the 'grannies in p.mt:t!oons.' On the other hand Line d.Ts aunporfers have proven thetn?elvs auch 'r iiinifirs' thvit they are afraid to ltj ire over hi? election as Pres-iJ-itcf the United Status for fear he will not, on amount of his Abolitionism, be allowed to presi In over the interests of several of the Southern State-. Ther owe iheir success to the division in the D emocratic party and not to any exertions of their own. The nomination of Lincoln was not received wi:h any enthu-fciasm,-he was not supported over zealously and tha news of his election is no cause for rejoicing by his supporter?. ?eco33ioa Movements. There is nothing of any particular importance transpiring in l elation to the secession movement in the Southern States ince our hiot issue. Numerous meetinghave been held throughout the different slave State. At moot of these, relatiatory resolutions hav been passed almost unanimously. At a lew of these meetings highly conservative resolutions were passed, in substance, that the election of Lincoln was not sufficient cause for secession, but that the legislation of many of the Free States was an outrage upon the right3 of the Southern States and a violation of the constitution and that ihey ehonld be resisted, by all good citizens of the ccuntry. Already, thousands of "Minute Men" aie carolled for the defense of southern rights. If those States do not intend to secede they act very foolishly by making the prperatioiis they have, ami by passing the resolutions which have oeen aJopted at nearly all the meetings held in those States. They will be a touh set of fellows to 'coerce,' sure. The Ckv of "Wolf." Mattingly. of the Republican, said brlore the election that the talk of secession, in the event of Linceln'a election, by some of the southern States, was on! tiie old cry of 'tVolf'and was raised for 'electioneering purposes' and he called those who feared 6uch a re suit, 'grannius. Now that secession and disunion are altogether likely to take place, he tsaya 'let thjtn go by all means,' and, as we have always supposed he was, ho is entirely indifferent as to the results that would follow a dissolution of the Union, judging from the tenor of his article on this Buhject, last week. We are becoming more and more convinced, after talking with many ot theiu, lhat the leaders of the Republican party have id regard for the right of the South, as thoy have no word of condemnation for the fre States that have, by the passage of personal liberty bills, nullified the fugitive slave law. Rather than the southern Slatea should have their constitutional rights, the sectionalisls of the North y let ihem secede 'by all inivana.' XfTThe President has iuscribed 5100 for thj relief ;f the aulTercrs in Kansas, and premiss to appeal to Congress in their behalf. CinnntwU tommerciul. Where is Old Abe? Retrenchment Fl3e Premises.
When the Republican candidates who now hold the offices of this county were before the people of the county for their suffrages, they made the 'dear people' all sorts of promises as to what Wey ould do in the way of curtailing the public expence of the county. Among others Judge Fuller was full of such promises and we are informed, (we were not here at the time,) made numerous promises to tüe effect that if he was elected Auditor he would It those do the public printing who would do it the cheapest. He now denies ever having made any such promises, and aceordiigly, we have not had an opportunity to make any bid on the printing of the Deliniu?nt List. We spoke to the Judge about it the her evening in the presence of 8yme gentlemen, one of whom told the JJff lhat 119 haJ ,lüt d0t1 5,3 he HSreed to, by not ffivincr us a bid on the list,; j t . whereupon the Rev. Auditor grew almost r ld'1 in thfl lowest kind of blackguardism. The Rev. gentleman evidently felt that he was guilty of tha charsie made against him, and could think of no better way to get out of it than to resort to low, dirty, blackguardism, in the use of which he is hard to beat. We have heard a dozen or more persons speak of the matter within a few days past aud they allaree in saving that Fuller with theother leading Republicans of the county did say in substance that retrenchment was their motto, and that tha county printing should b3 do r.e by those who would do it fthe cheapest. We were not permitted to make a bid on it at all. This is the way they fulfill their promises. We admire alike the Judges Christianity and political honeslv. Mattingly is not half so much troubled about the tax-payers money as he used to b-i. While the county w is Democratic he was always whining about the high prices paid for county printing and wanting to run the haziness down until the Democrat otfice could scarcely make a living at it, but now that the Republcans have it all to themselves, we hear no more about underbidding from him. Nullification of the Constitution. Since the southern States have began to talk of the rights of each State to sacede, the Republicans of the North have all at once become expounders of tho Constiution and say that those States must be 'coerced' or driven back into the Union if they secede. The facts on this point are simply these; eight of the free States have passed laws making it a penal offonco for a slave holder to come into their State and take his property as the Constitution 6ays he shall. Those States have entirely nullified the fugitive slave clause attached to the Constitution. They have just as much right to secede u.s those States have to make such laws, and while thoae nullification laws stand on the Statutes of those nullifying Abolition States no patriot who is unprejudiced will assist those fanatical Slates iu coercing the South. When those laws are repealed then it will do for those States to say that the South has no right to secede, but not until thtn. The South is under no Costitutiooal obligation to remain in th Union, the aggressions, have all been made by the North upon the South, and they have an inherent right to resist those outrage and in doing so they will have the sympathy of every unprejudiced, honest ci-.izen of the country. The North has commenced tho nullification. We do not pretend to justify tho southern States in c their acts, but there is certainly a very great apoh.gy for tho course she has taken, as she has forebor about 1od enough, we should think, with the insults and outrage- of northern Aboitionism. Let the North bo "coerced" first. Takes it Hahd. Wo see that 'J. C.J.' . 1 of Knox, is troubled about the 'imported votes' that bat him for 'RepresentaJives,' at the October electitn. W e hope the poo" ellow will extract a little poor comfort from 6uch winnings. The votes that de feated him were 'imported to Stark county 'lonir time ajjo. On the same principle, the Republicans of this county imported over 100 voters who voted for Old Abe at the l'ro&ieential electbn. Jehu, you'd Utter own up that run were beaten fairly, aa wo do in this county. The difference in tho vote of the two elections was caused by me division in the Democratic party and many of them staying at hom from the lection. This 13 the trnth about the ruatUr. To this di vision the Republicans owe thir success, and net to any virtue or strength in their doctrines. IIUNTrNOTON CoUNTT ELECTION. The retuns of this ciunty indicate a Republican majority of about 2U0 over the Democratic and Breckinridge parties. Rreckintidgo's rote "will range from CO to 70. In 1858, when Mr. Coffroth was a candid ate for Congress, ho received a majority in this township of 300. lnlCCO when a candidate for elector on the disunion lickfet. ho rece ved 20 votes. "Oh, what ti fall was the," His lavish expenditure of money; his circulation of documents; bis threats to play smash generally if the Democracy would r-ot support tho bogus electoral ticket availed him nothing. A heal.Vr rebuke than he has received, and one more merited was never administered to any man. Democrat.
