PLYMOUTH, INDIANA: THURSDAY MOUSING, OCT. 11. ' FOii PRESIDENT, STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS OF ILt.tNOU. FOR VICE PRESIDENT, HEES C HELL V. JOHNSON, OF GEORGIA. THE ELECTION. Wathave met the foe have fought a gnod fight and henceforth there is laid up for us a crown of rictory which the righteous people tfill give 113 In Marshall county we have dona nobly, considering ths large mijorhy, the vast amount of whiskey ani the lrg number of traitors and renegades we h i I t contend against. We have reduced the f rmjr rnj jrity of the Republicans from about 100, down to 24, and beat their figures 226 votes as they calculated to carry the county by a majority of 253. On the S te ticket their majority i3 only 21 and we have elected one of our county officers, and, by tho assistance of noble Starke, Old Mattingly, Peter Prinnlö and some few othert, we 9 h..re dne morethan we confidently expected to do elected our Representative by a
handsome majority. This is the greatest j both of those tickets, and we believe they victory we could have achiever1, and has . have manfully and honorably discharged given greater satisfaction to the Democra- that obligation. But in almost, if not quite cy of the Dtstrictthan anything that could all the other counties in the State, the rehave happened, and whai mtkes it better, ' suit confirms us in the belief that they we know that it hurts the Republicans j have either voted directly for the Repub worse tb an any other result thai could ' lican Stpte ticket or have refused to sup-
have htm brought about. After all the abuse Mattingly had heaped upon Packard, he run ahead of his own ticket one vote, and, considering there were some Democrats Toted against him, from leasons we will not now mention, it was a great victory. We don't want our neighbor to consider that his slang had any influence over those Democrats who voted against Packard, for that was not the cause. Mr. Packard is under obligations tosev-
eral Republican friends, f.r their votes, ; secured for them the victory they unjustly who detested and denounced Mattingly for ! laim as llieir ownthe course he had taken against our can-1 W "cave" far as the State is condidate for Representative, and really, we I cerned. The Republicans and Breckinfeel somewhat grateful to the old vilifier "dge men are too many for us, but, Demfor his assistance in giving us enough votes cratd, there is a day coming wheD these
from gentlemanly Republicans, to more than make up for the Democrat votes he lost in this county, on account of the principles he, Packard, ii pledged to. Unconsciously and unintentionally, Mattingly has done a good work, and has been instrumental in electing a man that will honorably and creditably represor.t the counties of Stark and Marshall in the State Legislature On behalf of the Democra - cy of tksse counties, Mr, Packard, and for oursalf in particular, we return thß old gentleman cur thanks for his assistance. In cnmm'.n with the Democracy of the county and the Democratic candidates we regret that Mtthingly did no: go into tho rest of them in the same kind of styU he did iuto Packard. If he had, they would J have been elected. As we stated some weeks ago, tho Re publicans throughout tho entire countv ! lit. etcircuimeu uie meanest oi lies concernin a out can lidato for Tieajurei, Mr. John M. Shoemaker. They forged what they said was a specimen of Iiis hand writing, and showed it around through the county to men who had no oppoituntty to know whether it was really his writing or not, and many wre made to believe it was. and a3 it was notliing but a lot of scratches and crookdd marks, that no one could make any sense out of, mmy voters were induced to void against him nn'account of incompetency, when the fictis, Shoemaker i without practica a better penman than Fuller, the present Auditor, after his two years practice in the Auditors ofücs. Ther also circulated the tbeivin - o Twport that Shoemaker had robbed his own jawelry tfiop, in the meanest conceivable .maimer. The villain tliat .originated that report will steal On aoount of these tjg and unprincipled report. Shoemaker was beaten 106 votes, only, while the Republicans thought by viriae of ttair lies (hey would elect their candidate by a majority of 300. Henry . Lojan was beaten because he was not adrunkard, and Barnard was elected by whiskey and the influence of whiskey sellers and whiskey bloats, and kecaue he is a drinker, and leaves prisionrs in the outer hall of the jail and lounges .around the saloons and lata them escape. Honest men of Marshall county, whisker Her nd whiskey drinkers have eontrold the levlidn in your county, and in the person öf O. 31. Barnard, they hfve olected a "chum" &t theirs, by a majority of Only 16 vo es. Onr candidate for Surveyor was beaten by 39. He feels verv much slighted by J - , , . ., i i , MiUingly, and Attributes? his defeat to the fact' that Mattingly did not say anything againBthim. We have elected our candidate for coroner over John Hönau, Rpubican candidate, of. Lager Bser notoriety, by A majority of 39 votes. This proves what we told John when they Dominated him. thev had' nominated him for the purpose of drinking h'8 beer and trading him off for
Oglesbee. . There was no electioneering done against him that we heard of and his pretened friends went quietly along and drank over fifty dollars ' worth of hi3 beer and traded him off foi Votes for CMesbee, whose election they did everything to secure. Not only did they lie on Shomaker but traded off their on candidates to secure the eleetion of their pet. Fuller said that they had nominated Hoham to trade him off, and the result shows that this was the object they had in view when they placed him upon their ticket. Verily is Hoham the victimJof misplaced ' confi dence. All in nil, wa haved gained a great victory and had the other counties done as well Marshall and Starke, the State ticket would have been elected by twenty thousand majority, instead of being defeated by probably over fifteen thousand. We are not diicouragod, but feel confident that we will carry this county for Douglas in November. The fight is now a new one, as we now know who our foes are, and who to regard o as our friends and eo-workor. With the Breckinridge men of this county we have no quarre). Thev have worked manfully with us to secure the election of our State and county lid eis. For this we give them
all credit. They doubtless considered themselves under obligations to support port the Democratic ticket that they help ed to put in nomination. We hope they will 6ettle such an act with their ideas of consistency and honor, but for our part we do not see how they will do it. Tho Republicans are making considerable noise over what they call a great vie tory. This is not right. "Honor to whom honor is due," should prevent their making nny demonstration only to, in some appropriate manner, return thanks to ilieir allies who have fought their battle and combined factions will not vote together. In November next they will each one have a seperat ticket to support and then we "come in." We can and will carry th otate for Douglas. He will carry Marshall county by a proper effort. We i have only the small majority of 21 to over ; come- A change of 13 voters will bring ! about the good result, provided things ; should go as they did at the late election ! 'r,1?s lne7 wil1 not do, as there are sevora Breckinridge men in tho county, who we ! suppose will support that ticket. This is j no lime for llie fading of hands, or for de- , "pondency. Ye have a work to do, and ' let us g j ADITIT i u - .. n . e e are getting pretty well out of pan tnce with subscribers who will go to the post office for week after week and month RIler monui, ana never pay once There aro ime men who cannot pay up, such men should tell us frankly that they are not able to take the paper and not let ua find it out after we have sent it to them for a year. We arc neither able nor willing to publish a paper for nothing. There is a nother class of men who are able but not willing to pa'. These are the men that we are out of patience with, and we now say to them that if they do not intend to pay for th paper that they will greatly oblige by telling us now and w will stop sending it to them. We have been at work day and night for them and the cause and if they were to pay us up promptly all they owe us, we would not receive pay for the labor we do. By "their tardinens they put us to such trouble about money, and throw us behind with our business. Ws want no more of your lazy promises If you do not intend to pay us until the close or the year or for five ytars, don't tell us that you will pay the next lime you come in town, for in nine cases out of ten you te'il us what turns out to be un true. By your making us these false promises you cause us to disappoint those who have accommodated us, and thereby our reputation for promptness is injured, which is a great loss to any business man. If you do not pay us you tnubt see that we cannot fulfill our promises. We want you to think on this matter abut a week, ten days, two weeks, End not longer than a month; and then tell us what you aro going to do. but for your own akes do sot make us any more false ' promises. To those of our subscriber who have so promptly paid us we are under many and lasting obligations, and none of the 4,Ä: flregolng remarks are intended for tl iem, of course. On looking over our lists we find that we are under particular obligations to our friends in German township for. their promptness. If our sr.b.oribers elsewhere kad been as prompt as they have been in that township.thisunpleasantarticle would not have appeared in eur paper. We say unpleasant because it is always unpleasant for us to write such things.
State Elections.
We have defered the publication of our paper a couple of days hi order to give our readers at idea of how we have been beaten in our own and other State elections that came off on Tuesday last. Up to our latest advices, Indiana promises fair to go fifteen thousand Breckinridge, that i the Administration party by the support they have given the Republican ticket, have helped to defeat the regular Democratic ticket probably over fifteen thousand. Ohio has gained a considerable Democratic vote, but is still defeated in many place. She may probably go for Doughs in November, when the Breckinridge and Lincoln parties "split. Pennsylvania I has gone Republican by about thirty thou sand. It appears to us that this can be overcome in November when the Administration and Lincoln parties divide, as there are certainly more than thirty thousand Breckinridge men in the State. The Administation party has acted with the Abolition party for the purpose of kilhufir and frightening the Douglas Democracy. nai tue result win oe we uo iri . i , -ii , i not pretend to predict, but we rather think they will not scare off tho track. Our present intention is to vote for nonintervention, let things go a? they may. Hurrah for Breckinridge and (Henry S.) Lane, "over the left" "Salt River.', We positively refuse to go up salt river. We have suffered no loss politically, but on the ther hand we have gained between 60 and 70 vetes and have elected one of our candidates, and have the satisfaction to know that wo have scared the Republicans worse than they can ever scare us. We propose to stay where we aie and tend cur opponents afloat for the head waters of that much talked of and now largely visited stream. We are not going. x Ho! for Salt River, We see by the Huntington Dcmtcrat that our friend Sam, is now rusticating at tho head of Salt River. He stated before starling that a good time was anticipated hope the boys will have it, but we are verj sorry to know that they had to "make the trip." By the same paper we see that the county cf Hun tingten ha3 gone Drecinriage 112 votes. Iiis no Republican victory. Wheat Wanted. We want our subscribers to brifg us some wheat. They are grumbling because they cannot get 81,00 per bushel, and promise to pay us as soon as they can get the "almighty dollar." We will give them that amount for wheat on subscription. So bring it along. This i a fair offer. We want 500 bushels at these figures, if it will b3 any inducement to you to pay us what you justly owe us. Interment. Jehl C. Jones' "time is up" and wc hope ho will rest in pone. We request the coroner of that county to seo him decently in tarred. it7Next week we will give the full returns of tho county by townships. Have not time to do it this. From thk Indiana Sentinel. The Death cf Governor Wil lard. We learn from those who were present at the demise of Governor Wili.aro that he died without a struggle. During the day tnat hid death occurred h was about his room and man festcd 'lis usual cheerf ilness, and about a moment before he expired he was sitting upon the side of his bed in pleanent conversation with the friends present.
