For the Democrat. Letter from " J. Q." Kxox, June 11th, 1SG0. Mr. Eoitor : The Republican Convention held at Grovertown on Friday last, passed oh" pretty well, with several exemptions an.l hindrances. r'irt, the M.ohall county delegation, under the guidance of "je Cranberry Senator," got lost, and came very n;-h not making a "connection." The supposition isthat the Senator was "prospecting," seeing what the prospect was for a "crap this season," and that he became excited or " bewildered," and the consequences wcie that he led his follower a ' wild goose chase." It is n-t known whether the Senator id pus.ion e!y (,.ud of frog hams, hut from appearances fome thought he tmphthave been " after 'em Finally they arrived at Grovertown. Finally they concluded to let Starke have the candidate, and Dr. J. C. Jones John C. Jor ?, was unanimously nominated. Afcr his nomination they pave him two and a half cheers small ones at that, then hitched up and started lor home. Starke feeling that tdie had "gone and did it," and Marshall feeling thatkhe had been compelled to act in the "passion voice "had btcn tho nubject acted upon." They had five black onk rails pinned together, and a dirty tag about two or three ft et square on them with the "lone star" on it. I have been wondering ever bincc what that was emblematic of, ant cannot think unless it is that Jones is to " go it alone " and get " euehred," which he will. The black onk rails were, we suppose, calculated to represent Hack Itepublican principles fit emblem. The rails undoubtedly, like what few smatterings they have of principle, were probably stolen from some honet Demos-rat's fence. Yours truly, J. Q. fit of learned critics, but for the satisfaction of my friends and equals, whom I wish to keep posted in relation to the times and doings here in mines; and to save writing to each individual that I wish to hear from, here. The emigration for the last month has been rolling in by the hundred, and for the last week by the thousand; and such a craw-fishing a there is now, and will be for weeks to come, was never ons are new, and made expressly for the trip; about as large as a one horse wagon for a span of horses, and four horses or mules to a common wagon. But the last week the heavy ox teams rolled in with cows yoked in with the teams, with lots be supplied with paying quartz: while we have but three small experimental crushers. Most of the leads wont pay for working the mines alone; but quarts [sic] and dirt pay well. Two days ago a man took out of the Bobtail lead $104 out of one pan of dirt; and $300 out of a few pans. That is a little the largest hall [sic] made as yet. New leads are discovered almost daily, and one very rich one 000. Some think it is not a regular lead, but a "blow up," as it is termed—as it can not be found any other place as yet; but miners are daily digging for it, and it is bound to be found if there. In this section of country the bulk of the gold will be from the leads, as the gulches will be principally worked out this season. Most of the leads require capital to work them to aa advantage: therefore the gulches are more worked to get ready pay; and some pay about an ounce per man per day. Yesterday Green Russell, the noted Georgia and Carolina miner, took out a nuget [sic] weighing $128, and sold it for $150—(fact, no humbug.) He is the discoverer of the gulch, has the choice claims, and makes money with his company of Georgians. But not more than one man out of fifty in the mines is making money, and Enoch happens not to be that one. Reports eome [sic] good from the Arkansas. Blue and Grand Rivers, and thousands are flocking there, and many will probably get bit by the humbug, as they did last year in the South Park, the best diggings discovered last year—that is, gulch diggings. We have it from good authority, we think, that much better diggings have been discovered on the Arkansas and Blue, than anything before discovered in this region of country, and much more extensive. Large prospecting parties have gone over the snow range, and it is reported the best diggings are there. If so, they will be found in defiance of Indians, or other obstacles; for gold is what they are after. Thursday week ago, the first pick animal crossed the snow range to the Blue. The miners would drive beef cattle as far as they could for the snow, slaughter them, haul them on hand-sleds, and pack it on snow-shoes from eight to twelve miles, more or less. It would surprise the natives to see the alterations in the short space of one year; to see the improvements and hear the different sounds. Instead of the yell of the Indian and howl of the wolf and other wild animals, we have the whistle of the engine to work by: we hear the neigh of the horse, the braying of the mule, the sound of the axe and hammer, and occasionally the squall of a child. Instead of the war song, we hear the good old tunes of Old Hundred, Nelly Gray and the hog-eye man, &c. All excitement, full of fun and good health. Such a life as suits Enoch—only the lack of fruit vegetables and milk; and a little more gold would not be objectionable. Now, I say to all who have families, and are doing a thriving business at home, and have their health, to stay there and be contented. But persons out of business, or wishing a change of business, or have poor health and wish an exciting life, here is his place: although no California, but plen ty of gold here, and plenty of hard work to get it. But perseverence [sic], picks and shovels sometimes get it; and sometimes by luck, like lottery or gambling. Those who intend coming another year, should commence this season preparing their NIC NACS, such as dried green beans, corn, tomatoes, turnup, parsnips, squashes, potatoes, pumpkins, &c., all the dried berries you can get, for they are scarce here, and very high what does get here. Provisions are coming down, to what they have been. Flour has been thirty dollars per hundred pounds, but is now selling at twhenty [sic]-two to twenty-five; bacon, 30, sugar 35, dried apples 35 per pound; beef, 12 to 16; boarding, 8 to 10 per week; wages for man and team $1 per hour, or $10 per day; man, $2 50 to $3 and feed himself, or $1 50 to $2 and feed; lawyers' fees $25 and upward—half ounce to an ounce invariably in advance; doctors' bills, the size of one's purse, and then curse you if it should happen to be a small one; touse, (taos—whiskev) twenty cents per drink, and warranted to kill; and other sundries in proportion. The winter has been the most mild I have seen since I left California. We have not had a sprinkle of rain since last September, and no snow to lay on the south sides of the hills. Stock fattens all winter without feed in the valley. The heaviest snows were in April, but soon went off; but on the snow range it lies on yet. I have told you all I can think of at present, except that my writing to the Democrat causes me to pay my quarters freely for express charges on letters for information. I suppose they think I am a public servant, and "fed at the public crib," as our friend Shuyler is. Letters of acquaintance I answer, and those of stangers [sic] I reject. Respectfully yours, &c.
