Plymouth, May 22, 1SC0. Republican Ratification. On Friday evening last, our Republican friends, having learned by telegrph, that " Old Abe," as they fondly and familiarly call Mr. Lincoln, was nominated, they grot up a ratification, or more properly jollification. They felt well and manifested a commendable zeal and enthusiasm. We were glad to see them rejoice ; and they acted wisely in doin it while there was an opportunity. A bonfire wasbuilt in the street, in front of Hewett k Woodward's store; two anvil? taken off their block ; a dry goods box up-endnd in the street ; A fife and drum brought out and "blowrd on," whieh served to attract the attention of our citizens generally. By the time they had fired the anvils three or four time and Mowed their instruments, they had gather d fjuite a number of spectator. The programme was not varied. Piirt first, wa to seize some one that was " gist about to pile,' with a speech undelivered, hoist htm on the box where he had ample room to jrive vent to his "pheeUnks." When the flow of eloquence stopped, they would blow off the drum? and touch . off thf anrils. Then it was time for the juvenile. Young America who formed a 1 irjre proportion of the crowd to vociferate. The entertainment was divide ! into about on' dozen p..rts : that is, there were aliout that many fellow s un op, who made poor speeches and then came down. Senator Brown, we believe, wa not in attend ance, or, if he was, he had too much sense to j i.uuu uic uox, owing to me tact tlir.t some eve-! .nings since, while addressing the Club here, he I tT7 rfT V. . - r. .. ,i . - . i ..... w. uu .n. in in nc it i j wiiii; to ins ardor n thm ,r,.--, ,. .i ... o m tne ciusc, or coure, as the Senator is a "rent twptrance lecturer. As the Senator is a prominent mm in the party, we hope for the respectability of the party that the platform made at Clvcagawill be larpe enough for this distinguished utesman to work on without falling off. From the street thfy moved to the depot dnot. where they keut up a constant fuincr under the flag supported by a Dunocratic stoUn rail, (of whici we have spoken elsewhere.) until the train on which the Delegates were retnrn'ng.had gone, when they adjourned, and went t their rcpeeti'c homes. Since then e have heard several political suts on the street, the Republican saving that hore3t Old Abe" is the g. eatest man of the are, while many of our Democratic- friends tell them that Lincoln is entirely indebted to Stephen a r ! . .' t . ...

O" Messrs. McKvhan are now in this county taking up subscription for a valuable and highly interesting work entitled " History of Slavery and the Slave Trade," describing the forms of Slavery that prevailed in ancient nations, particularly in Greece und Rome-. It is almost a library within itself, and should be in the possession of every family and library. They also wish to employ a numbor of active and energetic men, agents to sell the same work, as they wish to have all Northern Indiana canvassed. Persons applying for an agen
cy will address them at Plymouth, Marshall coun ty Indiaua, and they will receive prompt attention Seminary a bounds. The Seminary grounds are being paled in, which adds much to them and their surroundings. When the fence is completed and painted, as we suppose it will be, we wi!l have an institution that will reflect still more credit upon our town, which has, for some time past, enjoyed the reputation of being one of the foremost in the cause of education in this part of the State. The Strniniry is a good building, and is located in a lovely ipot, surrounded by trees and shurubbcrry of nature's own planting, which arc now beginning to lock most beautiful. Street clearing and sprinkling. The business men along Michigan and Laporte streets, evince mueh taste and cleanliness bv ridding the streets of the litter that is usually to be seen in them. They have also made another good arrangement. When "kind Providence does not send his "rain on the just and the unjust" here abouts, until there is a dust kicked up" in consequence of the drouth, they have made an arragement with Jas. Wolf to 4i lay the dust," and " keep things cool." Who will sav that ours in not as neat and lively a city as then.' is in these parts. Ora schools. Our town is now supporting four or five schools. The teachers with whom we are acquainted, are entirely competent to take charge of those committed to their care ; and, what is somenhat unusal, they are givinjr enti-e satisfaction to parents and pupils. Thir speaks well for both teachers and patrons. May this state of affairs long exist ; for nothing is more unpleasant than bickerings about schools and their management. Thk club meeting last Thursday evenim? was well attended, anl very enthusiastic. Speeche were made by M. O. A. Packard, A. C. Catron and Ed. Van. The meeting then adjourned, to meet this (Thursday) evening, at half past 7 o'clock. Jemeniber the hour. We want the band boys tobe on hand, and save the trouble of run ning after them- The meetings should be commented earlier and end in better season than thev commonly doNew t de-walks. The newly elected Marshall of our place, Wm. M. Pattir-on, has been having some very much needed improvements m tde in the side-wniksof pome of the prominent streets. TTTHEN in the couruft of trade, it becomes Vf necessan for one firm to dessolve the aiercantile bonls which have connected them with others, and to assume ameng the storus of Plymouth that prominent position, to which selling goods at a lower price entitles them, a decent respect for the opinions of the citizens of Marshall connty require the causes which should impel them to the separation.
