Did you ever live ;n the Soutl-', Did you ever see the propriety of the arrangement by which mules and niggers were placed pother? A mule i just made for a nigger, and tW w.i r they go together is a sight. The mule is m ugly as the darkoy, and between the two a fighlis about an ermal thing I saw a nigger at McmpBpi, the other day, with two mule? tandan to a cotton dray, trvi.ig to drive them between two pilaf Railroad iron. There was room enough and hi lead mule was willing to go; but the one in the shafts seemed to have a desire to go into the Mississippi, and he gratified it, ami the other mule and the nigger with him. Having accomplished his purpose he was content to come out; but qing like a republican leader (as he was, no .'oabT with but one idea, when he came around to the place agnin, he went into the river as before. Then the nigger got mad like Reward, and an "irrepressible conflict" commenced. The prowess of the nigger was worthy of old Brown; but the mule was "equal to the emergency." Six times the darkey brought him out, and with the aid of jne.whip and lead mule he got into the right track, and six times did the mule "bolt the aomination," and take to the water. The struggle was sevee. and such swearing and talking and laughing as there was by the fighting darkey and the other hundred darkeys, who stopped their carts and looked on. was never heard in Flanders. Speaking of muies and cotton, perhaps you wouid like to know something about this same cotton th it is said to be "King." Cciton plantations are like our farms some larger and some smaller. One good negro will work ele ven acres of cotton and one of corn. The yield is from one aud a half to two bales of 400 pounds per acre, The cost of raising and marketing is about $4 per bale, antl the nett profit on the bale is almut $3?(ä31. Thev are pressed

to Cairo, and took steamboat for this place . Open tur is a fine large town, and doing a thriving business. Some cistance from Cairo, you strike the timber hilly at first then low and swampy. Cairo itself lies below where the river often is, and the Railroad Ce has thrown Levee around it; but jr has Ieen twice overflowed. The Ohio River is now on a 'high,' and ice and drift woodfill it full, but only to the annoyance of boats. Cairo presents quite a busidess appearance, and U much larger Jnan I had thongbt it wa. It has some good buildings, and the St. Charles Hotel a large fine Hotel, newly opened is the best in the state outside of Chicago. There was but one boat coming down the "Chouteau," (Ao-to, as the runners called it) and I went m her in preference to going to Columbus ami taking the Railroad. She is old, and dirty, and had a hard crowd on board, but she is strong, slow and safe, and the officers were clever and attentive. There w--re a good many pasengcrs, representing all parts of t'. e union ;md several portions of Europe, and amon.them a few genteel people. Everything ms discussed except slavery and "Harper's Kerr; .' of the latter I have not heard one word since 1 left home, and 1 have heard B vast deal of talk abontareif other subject. I find hero abolition pamphlets of the "trial and execution of John Brown" for saie, niggors who can read, and no special prohibition to their reading it. I have talked w ith and heard a trood deal from all classes ol community, and so far as 1 have heard, the impression seems to be that the trnly intelligent and pOWer fal elesannU Of the country arc dormant until dlVnsastaneei call them into existence.
