The time flew by and the debtor was shy, Bat the editor thou get what he said. In his paper next wek the trnth he did peak And announced his subscriber as dead! Ths Devils Tail. In a town in New England there lived, a few years ago, a man named B t who was more commonly known as "Tonguey Jack,' a disignalion which he owed to his gift, of tno gab, and disposition to show off his wit at the expense of others. Tonguey Jack among other things was a rank Infidel, and was a great disputant on religious subjects. He w as especially fond of entrapping clergymen into discussion, in which, by his coarse humor and luiicious illustrations, be generally managed to get the laugh on hi siJe. In this way he made himself quite a terror to al! the preachers in the vicinity. A new minister hadjatet been called by a congregation im town, "fie wA qVite a young man and just from the theological seminary. One day Jack, while sitting with some of his crownies in front of the tavern, saw a yoang minister coming down street, and declared he would show them some fun. As the minister approached Jack came forward seriously, and said they had been discussing a religious question, on wnich they would be glad to hive some light from the minister. The latter declared his willingness to afford any information he could give. What I wand to know.' said Jack, gravely, is this: 'Evil, it is well known proceeds from the devil, who everybody knows has got a tail. Now, as you are a minister, and a college-learnt mm, Mr. C ', I want to know if you can tell me the exact length of the devil's tail?' 'Certainly I can. Mr. B., replied the minister, without hesitaton. 'Ii is exact y the length of your tongue, and it is an uncommonly long tail.' There was a roar of laugh from the crowd, and the minister walked on leaving Jack dumbfounded by the suddenness of the retort. Ha never heard the last of it; and though he retained his name and his character until his death, he Dev. afterwards ventured to molest the modest minister. A few days since Mr. Y., of this city, on his way from the Astor .House, New York, to the New Haven boat, stepped into a drinking saloon for the purpose of 'smiling with a friend. . Upon entering be saw two youog men dressed in deep black, indulging in ''something warm. They were brothers. Mr. W. accosted one of them familiarly thus: Tom, I perceive you are irj mourning; who is dead?" Mother," answered Tom. 'Ah, indeed: when did she die?" inquired Mr. W."D3y before yesterday' replied Tom. 'When is she to be buried?" asked Mr. W. Tuna took another whif at his cigar and replied: lThe funeral is advertised for four o'clock, but I don't think they will get it iff before five." Boston. Post. A man. killing hogs, became vexed, and vented his spleen, wished they were in h 1. Oh, dear me! what can he mem?' exclaimed a little girl, who overheard him. 'Mean? Why, I suppose the awful wretch wants to have bis provisions sent beforehand to his future place of residence-. A gentleman on a visit to Washing ton. one day very coolly opened the doos of the Senate Chamber, aud was about to pass in. when the dooe -keeper asked: Are you a privileged member? What do you mean by that?' asked the stranger. Why, a Governor, an ex-member of Congress, or a foreign Minster. 1 am a minister,' said the stranger. 'From what court or country, if you please? asked the official. From Heaven, sir said the man, very gravely pointing upward. To this the door-keeper waggishly remarked; This government at present holds no intercourse with that foreign power.' We cut the .following advertisement from a paper published in the far west: 'To rear, a house in Melville avenue, located immediately along side of a fine plum garden, from which-an abundant supplj may be stolen during the season. Rent Tow and ar great part taken in plums." . Foe a Poists or a Case.- An Eastern editor says that a man in New Yoik got himself into trouble by marrying two wives. A Western Editor replies by assuring his contemporary that a good many men in that section have done the same thing by marrjiif one. A Northern editor retorts that quite a number of his acquaintances found trouble enough by barely promising to marry, without going any further. A Southern editor says that a friend of his waa bothered enough when simply found in company with another man's wife. ' No one would take you for whal you are said an old fashioned gentleman a day or two ago, to a dandy who had more hair than brains. ' Why ao?' inquired the dandy. 'Because they can't see your ears.' A census taker once railed upon the soother oft family; in California or some other prolific country, and asked how many children she had. The mother replied that she really could not tell, but there was this ol which she was certain, the measles got avnong the children once but thare wasn't enough of it to go round.' "I sty. Hell let him sell them; must try to make a livelihood by strict attention to the market and garden, but H. says that he will buy seme Cattle, Sheejf, Hogs, and such little things for me, so that may get along if I remain faithful to the market. I will do that - My brother in Canada presented me with a rare bird of unexampled dimensions, (a Shanghai Rooster.) When attempt to speak of this feathered pledge of brotherhood, languague cannot come to time. He has a strong tendency to run to legs; he is ahagjy, eye like a hen, disposition courageous, tail like the but end of a feathered duster, and his voice like a rhinoceros with the whoopingcough; but call in the market, I can sell you plenty of other birds, but how they ever got my chicken to Plymouth, is uncertain, but the carmen tell me that they switched off on a side track and made him draw the passenger train, and for fear that he might stray away iu the night, cable him to the wooa-ho ise in the garden. He must be killed, or sold for a breaking team, or to some State or Territory for a curiosity. Wchrre direct the attention of the public to our newly discovered reine ly RADWiY'8 REGULATORS; they pose the great curative propr i s ol a purgative, cathartic, aperient, Mitlorific, anti-dyspeptic, corrector and Regulator of flic system. They are in fact the only perfect purgative and cathartic that has ever been discovered or giveu to the wurl 1. One or two doses of Radway' Regulators has freq iently checked the progres- !' the nn-st terriblediseascs, and restored the system to health and regularity. They establish new mid approved principles in medicine, aud secure the grnt and important powr of regulating to a healthy, natural and lmr iiomoin action, each and every organ in the bovy. Tiiis great controlling power has never formed any part of the properties of the popular Uatharic, Vegetable or ndiau Purgative Pill, that have ever been in u?e, Ridway' Regulacor rid the nvftcm from disease and restore the human body to health, on an entirely different principle to the weakening, sickening and griping method of the cmuioQ cathartic noil pnrgatue pillsOae or tWvi of Ridway's Regulators will remove the canse thut occasihns pain or sickness, or an irregnlar or nnnatcral action or condition of the organs of the body, quicker, more effectual, and wifli lets trouble to the patient than six or ten of the common ca'hartic or purgative pills. The moment Radway's Regulators are taken into the system afflicted with disease, their equalizing effiVaey begins: they search out the element of disease wherever it may be seated; they act upon tho whole surface of the intestines and bowel, attracting the foul and morbid humors from the blood, glands, secreting vessels, and ex celling these Seeds of disease from the bo ly. restoring u healthy and regular action to the Ziver, Bowels, Pancreas, Heart, Kiduey., Bladder, Skiu and all other Vi. Cera. THE BOWELS. All of the cemmon piil of the dar, called Vegetable, Indian, Ca'har'ic, &c. claim that they cure disease by purring from the bowels. This is a far as they go they act opon'the bowe's by irritating the nr.icnous membrane, and thus obtain nn evacuation in the same manner as the bowels are moved by eating something that disagree with the system. This is truly an unnatural methed of restoring the system to health, ly swallowing pills that irritates and disagrees with it, Those who have taken these common pills are well aw ire of the weak ahd debilitated condition their systems am left in. After the scouring operation of these drastic purgatives is over, the bowels arc sore and feeble, anil tgxin become costive aud bound np. Honce arises djspepsia and a host of other diseases. A WONDERFUL discovery has recently been made by Dr. Curtis of this city, in the treatment of Consumption, Asthma and all diseases of the Lungs. We refer to Dr. Curtis' Hygeana. or InhaUng Hfgean Vapor and Cherry Syrup." With this new method, Dr. C has restored many afflicted ones to health, as an evidence of which he has innumerable certificates. Speaking of the treatment, a physiciau remarks, "It is evident that inhaling constantly breathing an agreeable, healing vapor the medicinal properties must come indirect contact with the whole a rial cavities of the lungs, and thus escape the many and varied changes produced upon, them when in troduced into the 'stomach, and subject to the ! proc ss of-digestion."
