De.2 Sir; Ojt hithprta peaceable j town was on yesterday the scene of mob violence and riot. A number of women,; iiciuca oj a 101 oi rwnow it linings, mid a descent upon tho groceries in our town. Wo ore no apologists of doggerie9, yet when the law is not attempted to be enforced grünst them in an shape, we are opposed to mob violence to put down liquor sailing. Doggeries aro a curse, yet mob3 and riots are a greater one. Ther passed bj two groceries after holding a consultation with their keepers, and pro-1 ceeded to the residence of ono Warner Zifc, a German, in a part of whose dwelling liquors were kept and sold. They talked for some lime, until he was finally seizrd by force by men, and held while his liquors were destroyed, as well as molasses and vinegar, and other things. Such a scene our town has never witnessed, and we hope never to sse again. After the mob had dispersed, and towards evening, knots of men were seen in earnest conversation, until in the end another mob was about to be got up, when by the united exertions of Dr. J. B. Wilson and Horace HeflVeo, tha excitement was for a time allayed. This latter was one for the purpose of retaliating, snd strong hints were thrown out that the Flag office (Know Nothing) was to be destroyed. About 11 o'clock the mob reorganized, and proceeded to the Flag office, and threw its contents mostly into the street, and making pi of the type and breaking up near the entire furniture of the office. A shje shop belonging to one of the leaders of the first mob, was literally riddled, and several others damaged materially. Tha vrhole pople are in a 6tate of excitement, end the Know Nothings are . now threatening the demolition of the Democrat office. Dunham & Heffren's Uw office, and O. R. Harris' D guerrean room, and situated in the same building. Preparations are now being mada to delend them to the last extremity, and each of the above individuals are resolved that only over their dead bodies shill violence be done to the offices. What scenes may be enacted 1 cannot tell; how many lives lost, none know. Yet if the Know Nothings strike a single blow today, I ie result none can tell. Men are now coming in from the country, resolved to maintain the Democratic office at all hazards. N. B. Sine tho wilting the above the Democratic editor has thrashed the K. N. editor. Excitement still rising. M. The following article appeared in the Frue Flag, a dar or two before the mob, and we suppose was the cause of the attack upon that office; "Thet have the Powxh. We hear it tvhispr red about that the ladies of our town have under consideration a project, which, if carried out, and we know of nothing to hinder.) will, most assuredly, add great, ly to the character ol our place, and show, too, that the ladies have a deep regard for the youth of the town. The project we allude to as being deliberated upon, is that of endeavoring, by some way or another, to stop the traffic in intoxicating drinks. Now, we know that the ladies of this town have the power to slop the hellish traffic, aud we are glad to learn they seriously contemplate exercising it. Before oar ladies proceed to demolish the whisky barrels, demijohn, &c we would respectfully suggest that they first appoint a committee oi' three to call on the proprietors of the grog shops in our town, and respectfully request them to desist in the traffic of spirituous liquors, and theo, if they will not cease, just organize yourselves and march to the sinks of ice and corruption, and demand an immediate surrender, or rathet commeuce the work of demolition in good earnest. The ladies need not fear but that they will receive all the assistance necessary at the hands of the gentlemen, should there be any required. The women of Princeton have clear ed their town totally of spirituous liquors, and we also hear of other places where the women have taken it into their binds to suppress .the liquor, traffic, and they can very easily do it here. We say success to the ladies in all such praise worthy undertakings.' Ii will be seen that ine editor counseled and advised the destruction of the liquor shops by a mob of women. While we deeply regret that any attack was rnado bn bis office, and condemn it in unqualified terms, yet the editor brought it on his own head. He endeavored to stir up a mob against the liquor dealers, and succeeded, but he also has felt the vengeance of the same mob spirit which he exerted bimsrlf to excite. When the mob spirit is once aroused, no mu can say where'U will end. Fe male mobs for the - suppression of grog shops have become of frequent occurrence, and from the fact that those who compose thesa mobs are women, they have, in most cases, had their own way. It 13 not reasonable to suppose, howev er. that this state of, things will always he submitted to. Mobs on one side will alweys beget mobs on the other, and the husbands and advisers of the women who participate in these disgraceful scenes will, in the nature of things, be made to pay the penaltj. Liquor selling and liquor drinking may be a great evil, but it is not an evil comparable with the violation of law and order, and the substitution of the domioioa of mob law for that of the State.' John B Cutting was a surgeon in the raty of the revolution, and coming to Philadelphia lodged iu a house where Gen. Lea was theo boarding.. The doctor was n good looking man 'and not indifferent .in dress1 The General jBuddenly entered the $itiiXig room and found doctor before the glass, carefully adjusting hw cravat.
