To stop Potatoes feom Rottiko. An experienced agriculturalist informs us that about six rar3 ago he applied slaked Hrno to potatoes ih3t were pirtly rotten, and it immediitely nrrestJ the decay. Potatoes that were partly rotten when the lime was applied, remained as they Were, the progress of the rot being stopped, while those to which the lime had not been applied, continued to rot, and were lost. Since then he hs made it a constant practice to apply slaked lime to his potatoes as he takes them up. He puts a thin layer of lime upon the floor where the potatoes are to be said, and sprinkles some of it over them about every tea inches as they are put down. He considers this as perfectly protecting them from rotting, as he has never had a TOtten potatoe since he has practiced it, and he believes that potatoes thus used, are rendered some batter by the action ol the lime. We advise the- farmers to try this plan, as it can bo easily done by them. TO CURE SHEEP SKIN WITH THE WOOL OS. Take one spoonful of alum and two of saltpetre, pulveriza and mix well together, then sprinkle the powder on the flesh side of the skin, and lay the two flesh sides together, leaving the wool outside. Then fold up the skins as tight as you can, and hang them in a dry place. In two or three days, as soon as they are dry, take them down and scrape them with a blunt knife till clean und suple. This completes the process, and makes a moat excellent saddle cover. Other skins that you desire to cure with the fur on, may be treated in the snme way. Cholic is Horses. A Tennessee cor respondent says! The best remedy that I have tried for cholic in horses is, one pint of whisker and two thirds of tea-cup futl of gunpowder. Mix well and drench the horse. In ordinary cases the horse will to well in half an hour. To Dhive Away Rats. A friend has iust informed us of a plan he adopted to get rid of Rats. His premises swarmed vrith them, lie took a small fih hook attached it to a fine wire, and suspended on it a piece of cheese, letting it harg .1bout a fool from the ground. One of the rats leaped at it and was hooked, at.d set up such a horrible squeal, noise and rat tie, that all the rest forsook him and fled. Not a rat remained on the premises. The potatoe rot hs destroyed a great portion of the potatoes in this county. In manj instances the potatoes looked healthy when first taken from the ground, but afterwards took the disease, and became a ma63 of corruption. The loss will be severely (el t. as all kinds of food are extremely high. Laportc Union, Many of our farmers make similar com plaints. The crop is not near as large as was anticipated before the eoa. digging sea Medical virtues of Paesley. Two physicians of Paris have published a very Important memoir, the object of which is to make known the immense resources which the healing art may draw from the seed of parsley. This common indigen ou3 plant possesses incontestib'e febrifuge qualities or properties; the decoction of its seed be substituted for that of cinchona, and the active principle which has been drawn from it, and which they designate under the name of apiol, is equivalent to quinine in the treatment of the local intermittent fevers. A fashionable young lady found one day reading a novel, was asked by a gen tleman how she like 5 the style. Reviewing the incidents in her memory, she replied, "The style? Why sirv 1 am not come to that yet. Coot A5D Comfoktable. As we came on .the Brooklyn ferry boat the other day, b gentleman, one of the fast men evidently, drove on board at a rapid rate and nearly ran over a man, vbo seized his horse by the bridle and brought him to a ttand still. What do you mean? said the driving individual, 'by catching hold of the horse?' What do you mean, by driving over people in this way?' Let go my horse. I tell you. I'll so you hung first The roan leaped out of the buggy, and coming rapidly upon the other, whip in hand, cried out; I say let go of that horse.' I sav I won't till I get ready. Well, then,' said the driver, throwing his whip into the carriage, 'Just hold him will you?' and he walked into the cabin. A writer in the St. Louis Republican says with some truth, that Omaha City, the Capital of Nebraska, is the best one year old tovn he em saw. The Gbave of Madisos. A correspondent of the Fredericksburgh News, in Culpepper county, gives a melancholy picture of the last resting place of the il lustrious Madison. Ilelies with his fam- - ilv in a crave yard a short distance from .his house, upon his estate of Moatpelier; the family cemetry is surrounded by a brick wall, and the gate is entirely down The correspondent says that not a stone marks the great man's resting place; dark tunning green box wraps it with verdure, and the tracery cf branches from an old leafless chestnut tree, relieving itself a gainst the warm azure sky, nod and wave over the dark mountain 'tis a solemn, calm and peaceful spot. The correspondent adds that Mrs. Mad- - ison's remains are in the vault of" the Congressional burial ground in Washington; her direction was to be interred by ' the side of her husband, but her son has never fulfilled her request. Romeo Focsd. Recently in Detroit, tt ben Romeo and Juliet was 'in the bills, scaot race known at 'Romeo was in the pit, and when Juliet exclaimed. Romeo! vrhere art thoui (we quote from memory and may not hate the text) the youngater arose and said, 'here I im in the pit I bad only a quarter and couldn't get into the boxes! Juliet fainted.

JOILV J1G1IJ OHN has Leen to Tew ork. Niagara Falls j and Canada. I must tell you friends a little of what I have seen, if you will call at my market soon, before I forget it. I did see numerous packages of goods marked J. & II. J. Cougle, such as llicc, Sugar, Coffee, Fish of all kinds, y lnix JXotfous. So started for Plymouth thinking that was in but Henry s n'd it just meant him. Hell let him sell them; must try to make a livelihood by strict attention to the market and garden, but II. says that he will buy some Cattle, Sheep, Slogs, and such little things for me, so that may get along if I remain faithful to the market. I will do that My brother in Canada presen ted me wih a r.ire bird of unexampled dimenS'ons. (a Shanghai Rooster.) When attempt to speak of this feathered pledge of brother hood, lanuague cannot como to time. He lias a strong tendency to r m to legs; he is shav. eve like a hen. disnosition our.ieou. tail like the but end of a feathered duster, and ; - his voice like a rhinoceros with the whooping' cough; but call in the market, I can sell you plenty of ether birds, but how they ever irot my chicken to Plymouth, is uncertain but the carmen tell me that they switched o(T on a siile track and made him draw the passenger train, and for fear that he might stray away in the night, cable him to the wooi-ho se in the garden. But this voracious animal is eating me out of house and home, and with the means of the market only. I see that one of us must starve. His hunger is still on the increase. 1 have missed some of my wood, pigs, and kittens. The poor brute has also commenced eaiing his tes. bserved him lookingstrongly after Eliza and Henry. Mr. Downing backed out. Call folks and see this monster. Oh. this fe ithered Know Nothing, like the Eastern Prince, who, when he wants to ruin a m3n, makes him a present of an elephant, and will not allow him to sell, give away or kill, but fce must keep the saiiie and be devoured. This revengeful brother, for some unknown injury that 1 have done him, has sent me this villain, who eats as if he was the result of a cross between the anaconda and the Ostrich. He must be killed, orsold ior a breaking team, or to some State or Territory lor a curiosity. Times in New York saw the Astor house, city hall, white hall, and several other corners, all in the same night stopping at . 11. The last thing that distinctly recollect, was trying to pay fare for three with one piece of money, demanding i-0 change, bit 1 did not get it. I t-upposedthe city hall tobe an opposition steamboat. In the morning I found in yelf in bed with my clothes on, my boots under my pillow, my hat under the stove, and my watch in the water pitcher. tried to w rite to some one with my tooth-bru:;h fo ind it in the ink-stand.
