A Tale or a Tale. A young gentle man of Sacramento, California, some months ago, being much solicited by a young lady for a present, sent her a rare kind of Cactus in a Howe pot. The lady tended it carefully, but found it did not grow larger, and, after a while, the perfume became rather unpleasant, when she resolved to throw out some of the earth in the pot and replinish it afresh. The earth was accordingly, removed, when the Tare Cictus was found to be the tail of a huge rat, with a coat of green paint and a wire run through it, while the state of the crops fully accounted for the opressive odor. It is needless to say the gentleman got 'the mitten. Gentlemen,' said an engineer, by way of settling as to the relative speed of engines, 'the last time I run the Bloward from Syracuse, we wen so fast the telegraph poles looked like a fine tooth combe!' BnooKS on Beecher. Brooks, of the New York Express, who gained a good deal of notoriety by his strictures upon Bishop Hughes, has the following hit at Henry Ward Beecher; Brother Beecher, last Sunday, it seems preached Passmore Williamson, not Christ, crucified. He was no sooner on the stage in the pulpit, we mean than with a quiet smile of exultation, he announced to the audience congregation, we mean that the last martyr to liberty had been released. He stated th.tt he had received the news since he came to the church. Whether the promulgation of the news' was followed by a round of applause or not our informant has forgotten to say but why not?' TO PRESERVE APPLES AND PEARS. Having selected the best fruit, wipe it perfectly clean and dry with a fine cloth, then take ajar of suitable size the inside of which is thoroughly coated with cement and having placed a layer of fineand perfectly dry sand at the botom, place thereon a layer of fruit, apples or rears 03 the case may be but net so close as to press each, and then a layer of sand; and in the same way proceed till the vessel is full. Over the upper layer of fruit. a thick stratum of sand may bo spread and lightly pressed down with the hands. In this manner choice fruit perfectly tine may be kept for almost any length of time, if the jar be placed in a situation freo frcm moisture.
