ready for mailing, may be had at the office for 5 cents each. Agency.--C. S. Tibbits Esq., is our authorized Agent to receive subscriptions and money due u.s, in Starke county. tf. Our Business Directory.--- The reader will find an interesting reference column on our first page--- furnishing a partial index to the business operations of our town. There are several others who were not prepared to furnish us with their cards when called on, as the notice was short. and some others that we did not get to and at all; yet the public spirit and enterprise already manifested by our business men. evinces a determination to merit ' prosperity in their several avocations, and we hope it may be liberally meted out to them. When we get our list completed, of even those who are willing to Incur the slight expense of one dollar per year, it will present quite an array of names and business houses for our thriving little city. There ara several others having cards elsewhere in the pa- per that are too lengtny for insertion in the Directory column, as the space devoted to this department required a lim - it of not over three lines for each card. Runaways.---Occasionally a subscriber or our paper leaves for parts unknown without settling their subscriptions --- Week before last a couple left in pursuit , of a western home, leaving us destitute of our pay for our labor in furnishing them with the Banner. We hope when they get to their place of destination, they will send us their post office address, so that we may send them the balance of the year, as it is not good policy to spoil the volume. The crops throughout all our neighboring States, prove, after the harvesting and close irnvestigation, to be better than was supposed a month or two ago. The corn in söme portions of out own State, preaents rather a poor prospoct, and much depends upon tlie season until gathering time, whether it will be a paying crop or a bare saving operation. For the Banner. Mb. F.DiTOt: When uken into contiJeratiou the growing numbers of newspipr journals in circulation on the con ti- . nent of our wide spread America, an I p iued by all classes, how essentially important is it thit such journal? should, in all their edicts pertaining to morals, te purely so, and in th-ir political - eiselusions, instead of adhering to the dif ferent political faction of tho day, to twit party purposes, stick close to those 1 ?entirn.ents inculcated in tht glorious aentimeiits of the Declaration of Independence, from which document all our general and State Institutions nre, o; should originate from. How highly important, then, that nil our newspapers ahould support true Republican principles that should govern our country, a ince the youth of our country are greatly depending on that source of information to fit and prepare them soon to act &a the sovereigns of the nation. I per ceive, Mr. Kditor, in one of your numbtrs not long since, your avowal of the
course you intend to take in politics was to adhere to the old line Democracy. In that avowal I shall te happy to find you. and as caution iä the parent of Rafrty, ;. wonld advise you to be careful not to ntrrioto the present miscalled Dmornl- ; !C Administra.idn, varying as fir from the true- principles of the old line De moo racy a the East is from tho YVst. and they miy with propriety bo called the Slave ocricy party. Then under the illustrious and ever to be Tirmbered Thomas Jefferson, sprang up the Di-rnocratic party, and under him and -' tctx.8 of bis successor' to the administra--j t?on tere the true principles of Repubi llcanism and the Declaration of - lade pendence adhered to and fully carried out, nd then were tho old line of Demorracy r fully developed and their rational views T dbered to. . The high price cf com. 1 which is the stnple food of slaves in the j South (as i. i of hogs in the Wesl) has rendered, for many months past, the expense of maintaining slaves much more oos ly.
