A Jewel of a Story.--Mrs. Ed. has accidentlly got hold of one of the best stories we have ever published. We shall probably commence its publication in our next issue, or the week after. Look out for a rare treat in "Howrd Stanhope--a Tale of Life, by Well Cunningham."--It was first published in 1850 by Peterson New Advertisements.--Pattersons are on hand to supply the wants of our citizens in the fresh meat line. The steady and businesslike manner in which the affairs of this Company have been managed, is a sure indication of the permanency and stability of the Company and its worthy PresiCel.! Weather The Crops. The rains of Thursday and Friday last, chilled the atmosphere to such an extent that snow fell upon a small scale, on Saturday, and on Saturday and Sunday nights heavy frosts j'.!oed. From inquiry of our farmers, vtf Warn thai the wheat is more or less injured, particularly in low lands. Some say that the yield will not be sufficient for home consumption. Iiis impossible however, to tell the amount of injury sustained. The Corn crop has suffered quite a back. ?t, but it may soon recover its loss it the weather is at all favorable. Cucumber and melon vines generally, beans and most other garden vegetables are totally destroyed in many neighborhoods. The fruit crop sustained but little if any injure. Who Z'Z tut'! Mad D05S. Our last Laporte exchanges say that a mad dog was shot in one of the principal streets of that city, last iveek. It was intimated a few days ago, that a dog was seen in this locality with rather suspicious symptoms, indicating hydro phobia. Amidst the great number that usually throng our streets, it would be no mark of indiscretion to keep a sharp look out; and especially, keep little children from amongst them.
For the Tanner. Maxiskukee Lakf. Mr. Editor: Did vouever think what a variety of people it takes to make vp this world? and that every little town is a miniatute specimen of the great whole, in which you will find all extremes of character, with every possible intermediate 6hade of politeness, intelligence and good breeding? ?Jow, my dear Mr. Editor, I naTe nf er had the pleasure of visiting your little town, since my sojourn nmong the grand old woods of .Marshall county. But I must say thnt I have received very bad impressions of it from a few specimens of your inhabitants, who of late wandered so far away from home as really to forget the common sense rules of propriety and decency. Not many days since, a small party from Plymouth were called to Maxinkukee Lake, on very important business, and while here, thought to take a ride on the Lake, which looked up as temptingly as ever, through the glancing sunlight. Accordingly they repaired to the beach, und there found the Reindcer," as usual when not in use, fastened to an overhanging oak, neath the cool shade of which it was restlessly lying. Now why. we would ask, did those young gentlemen'.) in preference to going a few steps for the key to the boat, take stones and clubs, and by dint of pounding, break the lock and throw it into the watfr, that they might take the anticipated ride? We have been but a short time a resident here, and yet. already have we learned that liiere is no meanness or selfishness among its truly kind and hospitable inhabitants. Well do we know that the owner of the graceful Reindeer, would have been happy to have given the key to our visitors, and to have seen them ride to their heart's content, Why, we felt, Mr. Editor, as we saw those boys borne so gallantly over the water; that too, after they had so basely loosed the boat from her moorings, we felt thit it would be a fine idea for her to capsize, (may we be forgiven for wishing it,; 50 as to teach them better manners, by at least giving their feet a goo I wetting. Cut true to her task, ihe little skiff bore them safely back. We watched them till they stepped on shore, saw Reindeer's iron necklace thrown carelessly for protection arouud the bending arm of the huge old oak; and finally saw those first disturbers of our htppiness here, walk slowly away. We imagined they had an air of pride and hauteur similar to what little boys put on with their first trowsers; and we wondered wether they were ever out of sight uf mama before' We consider them hopeless cases, if really so far gone as to think they a.'ded aughi to their manliness, by so impudently infringing upon the rights of pople, who lie in the country" and don't live in Plymouth, and cons' quently can't be expected to know the difference between a human ape and an honorable man. But we were not in tending to dwell so long upon 50 unpleas. ant a thme. Mr. Editor have you ever been at Maxinkukee Lake? If not how I would like to tell you what nature has done in one. place at least, to make the world beautiful. Here in the serene solitude of the wild woods, there is nothing but the flowers of parth and star: of Heaven to list the communings of the heart with the unseen and real. But Strawberries are almost ripe, Mr. Editor, nnd an invitation is extended, to yourself in particular, and all your well behaved friends in general to t-ome and partake. But of this, more anon. Yours, DELL. Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad. Wo learn from good authority thit tho Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad will be so far completed as to finish a connection between those cilies this fall. The iron has all been purcha sed and is now arriving, part of it at New York and part direct from Europe, via Canada, to this port. Tho grading is in a fine state of forwardness, and the Company will be ready for a portion of the iron as soon ns it can be taken to Fort Wayne. This road when competed will furnish us a connection with Chicago nearer than the one we now have by the Michigan South ern Road; aud it is said but eight miUs further than by the Air Line Road. Fur travel, it will furnish a valuable, competing route, and might also for freight, were it not that the tracks are not of the same guage. It passes through a rich, well cultivated country, and will bring large amounts of produce to Fort Wayne which will bo shipped by Canal to this place. It may also divert a smal! amount of travel and freight to other channel, but on the whole the influence of the road will be highly favorable to our business icterests. Toledo Republican. J-a T . m-r VsHILPBESf iiOST AT IMIQHT I THE Woods and iw a Flood. The Portland Journal relates the following distressing occurrence: We understand that some time during the recent high waters, two of John C. Bailey's children, on being sent to the woods for cows late in the evening, became bewildered, aud losing all knowl edge of home, wandered through water during the night. Their parents becoming alarmed, roused the neighbors, and commenced hunting for the lost ones. After spending the night in quest of them and not Coding their whereabouts, the alarm spreading, greater exertions were made to find them, when they were found at last, wading in water up to their necks three miles from home. The eldest, about eight years old, kept telling the youngest that if he eried they could not hear their father call, 10 in this way they pas sed a sleepless night.' When taken out ofjhe watet and stood on drj land they could not itand alone,; 10 neu Canjifhei were they.
