STORY OF PLYMOUTH" MAN.
Edward Matthewton of This City, Has Hard Luck Tale at LaPorte.
From Plymouth' to Elkhart to South Bend and then to LaPortc; if nothing doing there onward march to Englewood, Chicago and as far west as inability to secure employment may carry him. This rs the stor. of Edward M'tthewon told in Justice Grover's of; fice, ays. tlu La-Porte Argus-Bulletin. Matthew.son's trade is tbfit of an engineer, having !been employed for several years in 'a Plymouth factory. In December, 1007, he was amorrg the many to feel the sting oi Wal' street and to join the great arrny of the unemployed of which he has been a member ever since. Last spring hi wife died, and, being without children, the man became a wanderer on the face of the earth. Not that unanalv2ed quality, commonly known as "Wanderlust," prompted the man to sever whatever connections iwith ifriends and memory he
might have had, but rather a constant pulling l the tTi-ng-s of neces. sity. These strings haVe pulled hnm to LaPorte and he says the Good God know where they -will eventually drag him. The man is well dressed, and of a prepossessing appearance. He has made futile tflfort to secure work in LaPorte factories and business houses. "Home talent must be served first," is the amswer he has received to all app'icatins ifor work. Justice Grover promised the man a good square mealt and this brought him new life and renewed his hope. But if he does not secure a position soon he plans to catch, a freight blind to Engel.wood where he js acquainted wi;th the roadmaster of the Lake S!i-ore who he is confident, will ?ive him a j-db if there's anything oyn. Speaking of South Bend, Matthewson said that the unemployed lined up like sheep in front of several agendas wk agree to aid you in securing a position if you'll kind leave with them your la'st $5.

j I THE LEMON BOX
Some people seem really funny, in the manner with which they carry on Qver anümah, etc. Rich societywomen, we are told, carry poodle dogs about with them, treat them as children, leave them somniclated on beds o feather ticks, and in genera! make a big fuss over. them. Persons of this! type are almost always childless couples. On last Friday while engaged in marking off ice on Dixon lake, one of the horses belonging to Oscar Tribbey miscalculated somewhat, and as, a result of his error, siTpped and fell into the lake. It was below freezing point, by the thermometer, amd there -was danger of the steed catching cold. Accordingly Mr. Tribbey mountod this Pegasus, and easily out run the winged horse of mythology with his ice covered animal. Arriving at the barn in Plymouth, the horse was taken into the office, where a brisk fire was burning, and was allo-wed there to remain until completely thawed out. and until his toes were "perfectly warm." J A resident of Plymouth, who was at Indianapoils last week, happened to call upon the Marshall county rep. resentative, W. L. Sarber, at his hotel. Much, to his surprise, Mr. Sarin r was confined in his bed with a sudden illness. In fact the afflicted man was almost helpless when the visitor -arrived. It was apparent that the services of a physician -were needed, and the caller at once telephoned for one. In a few minutes a young fellow made his appearance, saying that he was the doctor. He proceeded to interrogate Mr. Sarber concerning that gentleman's pains, etc. "Put out your tongue, now let me ieel your pulse, my,bad case." After mumbLns? a few words to himself, which smacked of Latin endings, the
doctor wrote out a prescription, wih the directions of having it filled at Hall's drug store, corner of Washington and IlHnois streets, and then
"Six dollars please". "How much?"
Six dollars, are you deaf also?" It
cost $1.33 more ro have ,th prescrip
tion filled at Hall's Drug: Store, and now Mr. aiSrbcr and a $25 lawyer are busy preparing a bill for the legislature, providing for the restriction and lrmitation of grafters in the state - J You have heard of boys who have a sort of "mania dementca" for riding on th cars, haven't you? And you have also 3iard tell of men, who when suddenly . finding a fortune thrust upon them, will give vent to
their exuberance by all sorts of un
accountable antics? Well the combination of the two above conditions, or circumstances, seems to have been concentrated in the person of Fred Goodyear when he was recently elected assessor of Center township. If you don't beKcve it, listen to the following. You know that Fred lives about two miles west of Irrwood. The other night, he was met by a neighbor on the road between here ami his home. Fred was driving toward Plymouth like mad. "What's the

-natter?" asked the neighbor. "Go: :o catch the east bound, out of Plymouth" he flung back, and .was swal !owed up by tke blackness of the night. It was later learned that As essor Gocdyear stabled his horse at Plymouth, boarded the east bound passenger at this city, got off at Inwood, walked two miles west to his home, and went to bed. The next day he came to Plymouth and drove his rig home. Furthermore he says tlhat he didn't think anything of his spree, "Jest felt like doing it, and why not," sezze. J Mr. J. Eugene Marshall, in conjunction with his mercantile store is considering the plan of opening up a retail rabbit business. In one sense he would have a hard job in the process of retailing the cotton-tails. hich -have a poor supply of tails to start withi, but if the dressed carcasses of the Rodentia cotvld be sold
for, say 50 cents per but cease th p:pe dreaming, O scribe, or theni wilt too soon exhaust the supply of thine Dukes Mixture. They do say, that 'Gese and J. M. Hemminger have entered into a partnership to secure a corner on the rabbits of Marskall, having in mind a final boosting of prices for those most elusive animal. Furthermore it is rumored that Mr. Marshall wishes to dissolve the part nership, 'but when the other member A the firm threatened legal procedure, he came across in a hurry, and was only too willing to expend the sum of 25 cents per hea-d for Br Rabbit It is furthe. wn-tsner-ed among the gossiping circles that Mr. 'Marshall in order to put a stop to the forced purchase of Tabbks, that he even stooped to pilfer one from a basket of Mr. Heminger, while that gentleman was being shaved Saturday. Thas latter is only alleged however, and for further particulars the reader is referred to W A. RVn hart, Geo. Marks, J. E. Marshall, or J. M. Heminger.
Where the Rabbits Go. A Goshen newspaper says that J Frank Lon of Claypool, last week shipped 1,230 rabbits to Elkhart. Clay township hunters say that it thas been a long time since there were that many cotton tails in Kosciusko county.
Tyner Item, Mr. Ira Haag and son are visiting her mother at Hamlet. Miss Maud Burton was in Plymouth 'Monday morning, between trains. Mrs. Ed 'Monroe visited her sister Mrs. Guy Ross on Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. Simon Ruff who has been visit ing relatives -at Nappanee, has returned home. Mr. and 'Mrs. Clarence Huffman vis-ted relatives in Plymouth Friday and Saturday. Miss Macel Reed and "Mr, Cook of South Bend, have been risiting friends in the vicinity for a few day. Mr .and 'Mrs. Jess Bennett ate dii ner with Mr. and Mrs. Toner Sunday Josie Campbell is indisposed at this writing. The ladies of the U. B. church served dinner to those attending the joint institute vt this place Saturdays About $15 was made and this will be nsed to purtiha'se new Lamps for the :i rch. Mr. Lorie Chase our Y. P. C V. resident, left Sunday evening for Purdue University, where he will take an eight weeks course ia scientific farming. His many friends wish him the best of success. The S. S. convention held ii the U. !i r-urch Mondav alteram and evi. 117 u as largely attended jnJ ver much enjoyed b all present. Mr. G. Bumie, the state superintendent, Mf. flume and Miss Julra Yockey'of Ply--nouth, were inspiring talkers an the afternoon. ;
Just Hissed Death. Under the influence of intoxicants and helpless, a man supposed to be a resident of Warsaw, was found! lying on the Pemwylvanu right of way several miles east of Pierceton. The man had a short time before gone to a telegraph tower and asked the operator, Merrrtt Miner, for shelter. On being refused he walked away and" laid down between the main track and the siding, so close that it is only a miracle that 5ie was not hit by the flyer or sucked under the wheels. He refused to give his came and but little could be learned from him except that he was supposed to have come from Warsaw.
