Culver Citizen. South Bend Times: The three great evils that stand in the way of general prosperity are the curse of -extravagance, the destructiveness of luxury, and the tyranny of fashion Extravagance keeps poor countless thousands of families of ample income wiho ought to be and would be in comfortable circumstances and steadily laying trp something for the proverbial rainy day. Luxury not only demoralizes , the household, but undermines the health and vitality of those indulging therein. Fashion ensnares and enslaves persons who would otherwise enjoy a high degree of rational freedom, comfort and h aptness. W'.ct better resolve can one form at this rime than that of vowing eternal hostility to this trio of evils?

SAYS ELECTION WILL BE PE

TITIONED FOR IN MARSHALL COUNTY

Rev. George E. Hicks Talks of Elec

tions Held and of Prospects for Ones Listed.

EXTRA-WORD COMES FROM

RELIABLE SOURCES AT ARGOS TODAY THAT A PETITION FOR A LOCAL OPTION ELECTION

IN MARSHALL COUNTY IS BEING CIRCULATED IN WALNUT TOWNSHIP. WHO HAS CHARGE OF THE CIRCULATING OF THE PETITION, HOW MANY NAMES HAVE BEEN OBTAINED, OR WITH WHAT SUCCESS THEY

ARE MEETING IS NOT KNOWN.

Concrning the situation in Indiana ;he following report is sent out: County option election plans, completed by the Indiana Anti-Saloon

league, provide for twelve elections to be called .before the legislature can get fairly down to business on the proposed action to repeal the law-

passed at the special session in Sep tember.

The result of last week's elections, when Lawrence and Wabash counties were voted dry, emboldened the league workers to hasten movements

already under way to Ibring about elections in the following counties:

Hamilton, Tipton, Jay, Huntington,

Randolph, Wayne, Decatur, Switzerland, Gibson, Putnam and Fountain. These elections will be called early

in January, in an attempt to have them held before the 20th of the month. Parke arid Hendricks counties

plan to hold elections early in Febru

ary. Marshall, Pulaski, Porter and Starke will follow shortly afterward.

"The repeal measure for the coun

ty option law is doomed, and will be defeated just as surely as it comes up," declared Rev. George E. Hicks

this morning as he reviewed the re suits in Lawrence and Wa'baSh. coun

ties. "There is not a democrat or a republican member of either house

who will dare to go back of the will

of the people as expressed in these

elections." Plan of the League.

The object in calling the twelve

elections eafly is to pile up as much sentiment in favor of the law as can

be done before the repeal measure can 1;e voted on. The league forces

count on the uncertainty of the otn-

ccme of these election's to make the

legislators hesitate when the repeal

measure is introduced, and as the

league counts firmly on being able to

make the twelve counties dry, the

forces expect to add their majori

ries to the league's claim in favor of

leaving the law on the statute books

Mr. Hicks was asked what course the league would take in tSie event a

county voted dry became a victim of

"blind t?gers" thus letfeating the pur poe of the temperance element vot

ing to put the legalized saloons out

of business. Law and Order League. "The plan is to follow each sue

cessful election with a law and order league in every county voted dry, he explained. "These leagues will see to it that the law against the illegal sale of liquor i-s enforced; that venders are arrested, and -that they are prosecuted. We expect to fight ai hard on this matter, should it become necessary, as we have fought o bring about dry territory."

STRIPPED OF OFFICE.

Dunkard Church at Wakarusa Expels Rev. . S. N. Eversole From Ministry.

Scandal has reared its ugly head in the Dunkard cnurch at Wakarusa and Rev. S. N. Eversole has been dismissed from rhe ministry but retained in rhe church. The action was taken after a full hearing by the church council, held behind closed dtoors. Rev. Eversole is charged with seduction. He wrote a letter to Mrs. Clara Keaton, wife of Will Keaton, formerly of Goshen. The note was turned over to Rev. Christian Metzler. Mrs. Keaton made an engagement with Rev. Eversole to meet her in a house in Elkhart. Rev. Metzler was concealed in the room and surprised Eversole. Eversole was accused witJh serious offenses a year ago, but the charges were dropped after a hearing by the church council on account of the weakness of the evidence. The last offense (occurred only about three weeks- ago. It is understood that Eversole made a defense tljat he was only acting as a friend of the Keaton family. Mrs. Keaton will be remembered as the woman who was mixed up in the theft of goods from a millinery stock from the Köhler storage building, for whicli she was given a paroled sentence on promise of good behavior.

There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed t e incurable. SENATOR-ELECT GRUBE OF

PLYMOUTH INVESTIGATES AT LAKE WAVASEE.

Cottagers Headed by Chas. W. Miller

Are Fighting. Plan to Dredge for MarL

"We believe that no community can afford a pleasure resort at the expense of business enterprise." This was the statement of W. S. Sailer of Argjos, representative of Marshall ounty when asked Wedncsday morning as to tflie cause of the going to Syracuse of himself and two state legislators says the .Warsaw Un'lon. 'Harry Grube of Plymouth, joint senator from Marshall and Kosciusko counties,, Jesse EsclibacCr, representative from Kosciusko county, and Mr. Sarber, went to Syracuse Wednesday to meet a committee of citizens to discuss the activity of cottagers ait Wawasee, relative to dredging done by the Portland Cement company. The cottagers headed by Charles Miller, erstwhile -candidate for congressman from this district, and previous candidate for. governor of Indiana, are . objecting to dredging in the lake, alleging through the aforesaid Miller, that dredging spoils the fishing. It is said to be the purpose

of tCiese cottagers to fight the dredg

ing in the statte legislature. The citizens of Syracuse favor the dredging. It not only means the life

of the town, but it is said to be actually improving the lakes and making

the fishing better.

The legislators who went to Syra

cuse Tuesday investigated the facts. They say that the part of the lake in

which the company intends to dredge

next is shallow and is grown up with cattails arid simJlar lake vegetation. The beul of the -lake in this part is filled -with marl to a depth of from

four to tern Veer. This means that,

after the company has dredged rhe

bottom of the lake it will be four to

ten feet deeper, which will make it better for fishing.

Fish do not spawn on the ' marl, unless, possibly, the carp do. Tie good fish require sandy bottom to

spawn on.

The committee said that the company would take marl from the shallow parts, grown over with vegetation, for the next five years if not interrupted by the state legislature.

Tyner Items. .Miss Jessie Jarrel visited her father New Year's Day. Mr. Toner is suffering from an attack of indigestion. Miss "Maud Monroe spent Friday and Saturday with Mrs. I. J. Kreigh, baum. .Miss Ethel Klingerman of Plymouth, was the guest of Miss Audrey Pence Sunday. Mrs. Henry Jarrel, who has been visiting rtJatives at Stillwell, returned to her home Monday. Miss Eva iPence who 'has been visiting friends at Columbia City, is at home now for a couple of weeks.
