PERÜMÄ EDäTORiÄL NO. 2.
Br. Hartaun has claimed for many years that Peruna is an EXCELLENT CATARRH REffiSD Y. Soms c f the doctor's critics have disputed the doctor's claim as to the efficacy of Perana. Since the ingredients of Pemna are no longer a scwrat, what do the medical authorities say concerning the remedies of which Peruna is composed? Take, for instance, the ingredient HYDRASTIS CANADENSIS, OR GOLDEN SEAL. The United States Dispensatory says of this herbal remedy, that it .3 largely employed in tha treatment of depraved mucous membranes, chronic rhinitis (nasal catarrh), atonic dyspepsia (catarrh of the stomach), chronic intestinal catarrh, catarrhal janndice (catarrh of the liver), and in diseased mucous membranes of the pelvic organs. It is also recommended for the treatment of various forms of disease? peculiar to women. Another ingredient of Peruna, CORYDALIS FORMOSA, is classed in th.3 United States Dispensatory as a tonic. j CEDROK SEEDS is another ingredient of Penma, an excellent drug that iaj been very largely overlooked by the medical profession for the past fifty y ar j THE SEEDS ARE TO EE FOUND IK VERY FEW DRUG STORES. T3 i'xuted States Dispensatory says of the action of cedron that it is U3od as a Litter tonic and in the treatment of dysentery, and in intermittent diseases as a SUBSTITUTE FOR QUININE. OLL OF COPAIEA, another ingredient of Peruna, is classed by the United States Dispensatory a3 a mild stimulant and diuretic. It acts on the stomach and intestinal tract. It acts as a stimulant on the genito-urinary membranes.
Our Peruna Tablet Is Peruna With Fluid Removed.
SAYS it is applicable to stomatitis (catarrh of the mucous surfaces of the mouth), follicular pharyngitis (catarrh of the pharynx), chronic coryza (catarrh of the head). Thi3 writer classes hydrastü as a stomachic tonic, useful in atonic dyspepsia (chronic gastric catarrh), catarrh of the duodenum, catarrh of the gall duct, catarrh of tho intestines, catarrh of the kidneys (chronic Bright's disease), catarrh of th.3 bladder, and catarrh of ether pelvic organs. BARTHOLOW REGARDS COPAIBA as an excellent remedy for chronic, catarrh of tha bladder, chronic bronchitis (catarrh of the bronchial tubes). BARTHOLOW STATES THAT CUBEB, an ingredient of Peruna, promotes the appetite and digestion, increases the circulation of the blood. Useful in chronic nasal catarrh, follicular pharyngitis (catarrh of the pharynx), increasing the tonicity of the mucous membranes of the throat It also relieves hoarseness. Useful in atonic dyspepsia (catarrh of the stomach), and in chronic catarrh of the colon and rectum, catarrh of the bladder, prcstatorrhea, and chronic bronchial affections. MLLLSPAUGH, MEDICINAL PLANTS, one of the most authoritative) works on medicinal herbs in the English language, in commenting upon COLLINSONIA CANADENSIS, says that it acts on the pneumogastric and vaso meter nerves. It increases the secretions of the mucou3 membranes in general. In the mountains of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Carolina, collinsonia canadensis is considered a panacea for many disorders, including headache, colic, cramp, dropsy and indigestion, . DR. SCUDDER regards it highly as a remedy in chronic diseases of the lungs, heart disease and asthma. These citations ought to be sufficient to show to any candid mind that Peruna is a catarrh remedy. Surely, such herbal remedies, that command the enthusiastic confidence ox the highest authorities obtainable, brought together in proper combination, ought to make a catarrh recudy of the highest efficacy. This is our claim, and we are able to substantiate thu claim by amnio quotations from the HIGHEST MEDICAL AUTHORITIES IN THE WORLD.

Good feed all the year in'proves gov,l i'lood. Let the sheep do their own grinding when it comes to feeding oats. Kinglioius on horses are often cruised by letting the toes -row too long. Some of the leading growers prefer to trim fruit trees this month ra titer than early spring. P.uttermiik saved from the last churning makes a uood starter for the cream for the next churning. The best way to make the farm profitable is to keep animals and soil in healthy, vigorous condition. Five million dollars have recently been spent in Australia on fencing to keep the rabbits from agricultural land. There is one crop which is produced In a weedy field that most p"iple fail to take Into account. This is a crop of rabbits. The winter time is the busy season for getting ideas for next season work. Do lots of reading, lots of thinking, lots of planning. If yon did not have a garden last year begin to plaa for one this year, and if you had one last year, plan for a better one this year. The prospect isthat hogs will grow into money fast again for at least another year. It may be doubted whether they will ever go very low again. Ever know a farmer to buy a poor cow because she was cheap and keep her nu'Jiy years and think he had secured a bargain? Many a man is penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to the cow deal. Half the bad habits of horses may be laid at the door of the men who handle them. I have svn a mare cured of pulling at the halter just by the change of master. Kindness always brings the best kind of returns. If there Is not a gool balance struck between tho feed bucket and the milk pail you better Ferve no? Ice on your -ow' that her room is better than her company. (let rid of the unprofitable cow. Perhaps a little carpenter work just euch as most any farmer can Ho will add considerably to the comfort of the emv stable the pig pen or the hen house. Better attend to it now before severe weather sets in. Do you know whether your Logs are getting heavier or not? Don't guess at it Ilavo some scales and drive them on them onee In a while so that you can know about it. That's the way to find out whether your money is counting or not. Be ujvto-date In your farm methods. Know what manufacturers are doing for you in the matter of improved machinery, and study tho Inst of the farm literature to know what agricultural experts are finding out about the cultivation and growing of crops. Here Is a good idea for the hog breeder: Put a peck of sand in tight bags and sew up, then if the sows farrow on cold or wet days you can put tho chilled pigs into n blanket lined basket on the sand bag which has been previously heated in the kitolwnt oven. The little pigs soon dry off In this way. A person in the country never realizes how smoky the city is until lie perchance spends a day or two there. The deiiRe atmosphere of the iwtroimlls always recalls the story of the Englishman who lived in a certain seaport that was extremely fogy. und cuce In shingling a house the fog was so dense lie shingled right over the peak on Into ppace. According to the most recent returns, there are in Switzerland about a quarter of a million beehives, or one to every twelve inhabitants. The yl'dd of a scientifically constructed frrme hive often reaches 100 pounds of heney Icr season. The yield from a "skep," or old-fashioned straw hhe, is much smaller. The honey harvest may be taken at some four pound per head of the resident population. Prof. Wiley of the agricultural department declares enough cornstalks go to waste in this country from which alcohol could be made sufficient to drive all the machinery of our factories besides furnishing the requisite power for all the railroads and steamboats of the country, run all the nutrnohiles, light and heat all our houses and furnih U'zht for the streets of every city in the union. Will ever an coonoinieal method of saving this enormous waste Ie devised? For I'Ikm I'aMnri. At the Iowa Experiment Station a ration of corn alone on timothy pasture produced the cheapest gains in weight of any of the rations fed to pigs on pasture, but the mixed rations produced the greatest total net profits. CnttiiiK Ilnck Tree. In highly interesting experiments at the Woburn (England) experimental fruit farm in cutting back apple trees when planted the ultimate result was found to bo that trees not cut hack tintil the end of the first year con-timi'.-d to form wood in subsequent years-, and the crop borne by them during the fir.-t ten years was only onethird of that lMrne by those which were cut back when planted. Industry of llee. When you eat a soonful of honey you have very little notion as to the amount of work and travel necessary to produce it. To make 1 pound of clover honey bees must deprive G2.000 clover blossoms of their nectar, and to do this requires 2,7.V,0f.O visits to the blossoms by the bees. In other words, one bee to collect enough nectar to make 1 pound of honey must go from hive to flower and back 2,700,000 times. Then, when you think how far these bees sometimes fly in search of these clover fields, oftener than not one or two miles from the hive, you will be

gin to get a small idea of the number o miles one of the industrious little creatures must travel in order that 3011 may have the pound of honey. A Wln.Ureak. A windbreak consists of one or two rows of trees planted prirar'y for thet purpose of checking the: force of the wind. The term "shelter bolt" is applied to larger groups of trees which form forest conditions ami servo a protective purpose. Any species which is adapted to the" res Urn may be used for windbreaks. Where evergreens will succeed, however, thoj- are more desirable, simt they afford better winter protection than deciduous tree. A windbreak consisting of a single row should be composed of a densely growing species, with branches close to the ground. Speele vt Aininrin. There are alxiut eight species of alfilaria growing in the United States, three InMng native to the Pacific coast region. Tho most valuable and the one that lias made such progress on the ranges is the red stemmed alfilaria (Erodiuni eicutarium). This species is a hairy, slightly viscid, erect or ascending herbaceous winter annual from six to eight inches high. Its flowers are lilac or purple, and the plant possesses generally a pronounced musky odor. During the winter it forms a compact, many leaved rosette from ten to twelve inches in diameter, from which the stems are thrown up during the spring months. Alfalfa Yield. In co-operative tests with farmers at the Maryland Experiment Station tho reports received show yields ranging from two and a quarter to seven tons Ier acre. One farmer reported a yield of five tons per acre on a field of sixtysix acres 80cdd twelve years ago. The results of Inoculation tests showed the value of using alfalfa and sweet clover soil for this purpose. Of the farmers reporting 122 had good stands at the time of making their reports, while thirty-six had l?en unsuccessful. Of the successful parties ninety-one used manure, sixty-six lime, fifty-seven commercial fertilizer, thirty-nine commercial fertilizer and lime, fifty-two manure and lime, thirtythree manure and lime and commercial fertilizer, seven a nurso crop, forty-owe soil inoculation, and eighty-two seeded in the fall. Care of the Toons Cnlf. When a young calf Is taken from Us dam, there is more or less difficulty in raising It. Some mistakes are usually made, the result being scours. The natural food of the calf is fresh, warm milk, and the milk given it after it is parted from the cow should also be fresh and warm. If klm milk is used there will be a lack of cream, whie:i Is important, so far as the welfare of the calf Is concerned. One who has been successful adds a raw egg, weil shaken, with the milk, at eich meal. Flaxseed meal, cooked until a jelly is formed, may be used with the milk, a gill at each meal being suilieient at first. Do not overfeed, but give a little milk at a time and ofte 1, at a tem perature of 03 degrees. ATcragn Munt lie Itnlaed. Trofessor P. G. Holden in his ABC of Corn Culture, says that wblio tho average yield of corn In the United States is less titan twenty-five bushels I -er acre, yet there are hundreds and thousands of fanners who produce sixty ami seventy, and often eighty and ninety bushels per acre. "I have in mind," he says, "scores of instances where of two fields, just across th road from eacli other, or perhaps adjoining, but on different farms, one yielded more than seventy bushels and the other less than twenty, yet the land values were the same ami the labor required to produce the twentybushel crop as great as to produce the swenty-bushtl crop. If one man can produce sixty and seventy bushels per ricre. the other man can do It also, and not only that, but must do it if we are to achieve our agricultural ioss.lblHtles." Test your corn carefully, and if it Is found defective end away at once for a supply, but tost that also. Lars; Earning of n Small Farm. The dairy department of the Illinois Experiment Station has recently pullishcd a bulletin giving the methods that were used, whereby a dairyman In Illinois realized a gross Income of $2,150 from a ninety-six-acre dairy farm. The owner of this farm. Charles Foss, began dairying In 1000. His cows the first year avernged about 170 pounds of butter fat. The first four years he re-eoived an averago annual Income of .$100 from his cows, $ÖM from Iiis hogs and $."00 from his grain. Iast year his income from the same farm was $000 for hogs, $1,150 from his dairy and enough from other sources to run his gross income up to $2,1 50. Three years ago Mr. Foss started out to follow the advice given by the dairy department of the Illinois station, and as a result his fourteen (vs that year averaged 5.S0O pounds of milk, containing 221 pounds of butter fat, while the following year the fourteen cows averaged 7,105 pounds of milk, containing 2ÖO iounds of butter fat; the third year the same cows, during ltKjd, averaged 8,057 pounds of milk, containing Ö07 iouuds of butter fat per cow. The Increase in the yield of milk was due largely to the Ik Iter feeding methods employed, and especially to the fact that silage was fed during the winter and soiling crops were provide for use during the suif.mcr drought, thus preventing a reduction of the milk flow. Py weighing and testing the milk. Mr. Foss was able to sell the low producers and by the use of the silo lie was able to balance his ration without greatly Increasing the cost. Three hundred and seven pounds of butter fat means "5S ounds of butter. This means an income of $811.50 per cow when butter sells at an average of 25 cents per inmd. It Is pointed out in tho bulletin referred to that a herd of twenty-live or more cows could easily be kept on the same income would amount to $2,80-1. Adding to this the valuo of the hogs and other products prodiiv-ed on the farm, the total incline would be $3,714 from the ninety-six acres, or $:w.Si per acre. A pure-bred sire is lelng used in this herd, the Idea 1 icing to keep up the numlor by raising heifer cahes from the best cows.
STSEXUCUS LOVE-MAKING.
AtuuiiK the IV : ;; u 1 11 s There, Are Llvfly luht i;r .Mim-M. It is probable that penguins pair for life, althcegh nothing definite is known on the subject. When mates are chosen tiie process is as interesting as it is striking. As is the ci-.se with so many creatures, the males fight with each other for the females might being right in the penguin code. The birds have regular fighting places, and one such battiL ground was found under an overhanging Udge. The results of innumerable encounters were present in Cue shape of great quantities of loose feathers surroundiirg the little fighting ring, which Itself was clear of all debris. Although the beak of a penguin is so formidable a weapon when used on thin-skinned enemies, yet their own skin and blubber are so resistant that they can inflict no injury by this means. The customary mode of fighting is really a kind of b'xlng. or -flrpper-ing.' It might be called. The two combatants proceed to the fighting place and then walk cautiously about each other, jockeying for an opening and ready to take instant advantage of a false step or move on the part of the opponent. All. however,- is solemn and decorous, consistent with the rest of the life of these strange little beings. When at last each secures a good grij) on the neck or body of the opponent, the real fighting begin. As niuetenths of the life of penguins is spent on the open sea. where they pursue and capture fish, swimming with great swiftness by strokes of the flipper-like wings, it can well be imagined that the strength of their wings is very great and when the two fighters begin to belabor each other with rapidly vibrating flipper strokes, each resounding whack must make a considerable impression evr-n on the protecting coat of blubber fat. Xo one has ever recorded a finish of such an encounter, but it is not probable that they result fatally. The weaker of the two must soon suceumb under such severe punishment and yield the field and the fair penguin mate to his stronger rival. The strength of the wing strokes can be tested by allowing a penguin to take hold of one's coat sleeve, or, better, the back of the hand. The third or fourth strike will xlraw blood and one is soon fully satisfied as to the penguin's ability in this respect. The tough skin and the loose, rolling blubber beneath, besides breaking a fall and protecting the bird from the icy waters in which it lives, sometimes subserves another most important purpose. THE CLII1ATE IS ID HAL.
Great Wealth Acquired lu Gravrlas (inln. Writing from Sa ska tool. Saskatchewan, Canada, W. II. Ellwanger, who was formerly a resident of (Jrecn Mountain, Iowa, says: "The climate in summer is ideal for growing grain. Long, clear days of sunshine, no bad storms. We never need to guard against cyclones. I never saw a better climate in my life. We made more money during the season of 100G than any previous five years in Central Iowa one of the' best districts in the State." Rut Mr. Ellwanger was a resident of the town, and it might be me-re interesting to read what a farmer has to say about Western Canada. From hundreds of letters, all filled with words of praise, recounting success in Western Canada, there has been one selected. It is as follows : Taynton, Sask., Canada, Dec. 10th, 11X17. To Whom This May Concern: I moved to this address Feb. 3, 1907, from Montgomery, Iowa, and took a homestead 35 miles north of Paynton. It was cold when I moved here, but it did not stay cold long; it broke up the 8th of February, and was not so cold after that; but the spring was late on account of the heavy snow fall, but In spite of the late spring I saw better grain than I ever saw in the States raiscnl this year. I helped a man finish sowing oats the 4th of July, and. they made fair oats. In a good year oats will go 100 bushels to the acre, and wheat 25 to 50; all root crops do well here. I saw turnips weigh 7 and 8 pounds. I raised potatoes this year that measured inches one way and lSa the other in circumference. This is a fine stock country ; hay in abund-1 ance, good water, plenty of fuel free and plenty of building material, the government gives us timber to saw Into lumber, and we can get It sawed for about $0.00 per thousand. All small fruit grows wild here. Then there are j ducks, geese, grouse, pheasants, deer, moose elk and fish In abundance. 1 1 was over to Turtle Lake yesterday, w here there is lots of fishing being done this winter. I saw about a carload of white fish in one pile. I gave 25 cents ' for SO pounds of fish. What do you think of that, Brother Yankee? I think this is a fine place, both to make money and to live. There was an old man up here visiting his brother-in-law. Now this man owns land close to Des Moines, Iowa, and is in good circumstances, but he took a homestead and gays he will be contented If he can only put In the rest of his days in Canada. He would get up in the morning and look out of the door and say: "Well, who wouldn't live in Canada?" Now I have been in 13 different States in the United States and I never saw the chance that there is here for a man that has a little muscle nd a little brains. Three cheers for Canada ! (Signed.) W. A. SPICE. This is the temperature through November. I took it myself, so I know It is right, in the shade.
