Chinatown in San Francisco.
It appears from articles in the California papers that rebuilding has been going on with exceptional rapidity in the old Chinatown district of San Francisco, w'hich-is to continue as the Chinese quarter. There has been, however, a great change in the character of the buildings. Formerly'the area was covered for the most par with dilapidated rookeries, th ere was burrowing underground, and while there was much that was interesting in a tour of the place it had a tumble-down, aspect and the filth was indescribably offensive:. Now substantial building materials are being used, such alterations as are made by tenants are for picturesque effect, and the Chinese property owners propose that t'he conditions of occupancy shall be more favorable to health and cleanliness than those which prevailed for so many years. According to recent reports, some 5.000 Chinese have returned to the district as residence. That is only a fraction of the old population, but dependence cannot be placed on the old estimates, which varieU greatly. The maximum of residents was reached before the effect of the exclusion law began to be felt, and after that there was a large decline. Estimates have been made as high as 40,000, and in more recent years others as low as 15.000. According to the federal census reports, the Chinese population of the city was 20,000 in 1800 and 14,ooo in looo. The difference in twenty years from 1SS3 to 1903 was such as to be immediately obvious to returning visitors'.
