He says he placed him in the vice presidency to get him out of the way, with the result of his becoming president through a long succession of years, much to the discomfiture of Mr. Piatt and many more of his kind The idea of a superranuated old fos sil like Senator Piatt, derogating the acts of President Roosevelt, and de crying the one great act of his own life. It is a travesty on justice. It will be remembered that about a year ago, our county commissioners hired tax ferrets, to seek out sequestered wealth for taxation, and that several parties were sent here who made an exhaustive research through the records, compiling notes and data. Well the supreme court has since rendered its decision on such matters, to the effect that that is the county assessors' business a"d the hiring of ferrets' is illegal. There being no funds appropriated with which to pay for the work, the board is called to meet May 20 to appropriate the necessary $17,500. There promises to be a lively time as numerous parties will object to the allowance, claiming it is a clear waste of the taxpayers' money or worse.

Council Gets Tired of Resolution Giving Exclusively Dock Deeds's Vote was
The Camel's Back.
"Some one" handed the city clerk a resolution repealing the famous Metsker grab resolution passed in November, 1905, which reads as follows: Be it resolved by the common council of the city of Plymouth, Indiana, that the resolution passed by the common council of said city, on the 27th day of November, 1905, in the words and figures as follows, to-wit: "Be it Resolved by the common council of Plymouth, Indiana, That until further orders by this council, all legal notices required by law to be published in a daily paper, be published in the Daily Independent, and all legal notices required by law to be published in a weekly paper, be published in the Plymouth Democrat, and this resolution governs legal notices ordered printed tonight, November 27, 1905," be and the same is hereby rescinded and repealed. J. M. Olds, Clerk. Passed May 13, 1907, After reading the resolution, CounMiss Theresa Hendricks went to Valparaiso Monday to enter commercial college. Steve Mann, who now resides on a , farm near Tyner, went to South Bend Monday. Miss' Lois Shaw, of Argos, who came here to attend the funeral of her uncle, Archie Phillips, returned home Monday. Miss Nellie Wheeler of South Bend, stopped in Plymouth Sunday on her way to Bourbon, to visit her sister, Mrs. George Walmer. Ed Kleinsmith, brother of George Kleinsmith, and1 wife of Cardington, Ohio, who had been visiting here, went Monday to St. Paul, Minn. Mrs. Lottie Howe has returned to Lakeville, having spent a week here in assisting her sister, Floy Leonard, in her preparations for graduation. J. O. and L. L. Manning and their families of Rochester, who were guests for several days of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Steele, returned home Monday. George H. Thayer and son Paul, were interested spectators of the games at South Bend Saturday. They remained over night and heard the oratorical debates. Mrs. Monroe Steiner returned Monday from Walkerton, where she had been to visit her mother, Mrs. Mary Rensberger, who on Thursday was 87 years of age. .The iast of the Plymouth contingent to South Bend arrived at noon today. A large number came on the early morning train. All unite in saying it was a big affair. Frank Jacox went to South Bend Saturday evening, to remain over Sunday. His purpose was to visit a number of Sunday schools and get hints as to manners of conducting. The wreck of the Buriington suburban train in Chicago Friday morning is proving more serious as time passes. One victim wa killed inthe wreck and several others have died since. The Plymouth baseball team has won five out of the six games played. There will be a game next Saturday with South Bend, and a game with the alumni to be played yet which will close the season of the club. Miss Clara Wiseman, daughter of Dr. Wiseman, and the Misses Jesse Groves and Ethel Smith, all of Culver, went Monday to enter the commercial college at Valparaiso. Miss Smith's father, D. H. Smith, carries the largest rural route mail of any carrier in the state. Frank Jarrett, the qenial agent of the Standard Land company, is cred ited by his friends with having con summated a successful and highly important deal aside from his land busi ness and of an entirely different character. It is rumored that he has closed a big deal that involves one of the inest of young ladies, and that the necessary paper to the transaction have already been made out. Exciting Wrestling Match. William H. Reed, residing northeast of Inwood, has a promising colt of which he is very proud. Saturday Mr. Reed putting on a halter attempted to give the colt a few lessons, and a lively wrestling match was immediately pulled off. The colt was "feeling his oats", and he wrapped his legs around Mr. Reed's head and got him down, taking- of several pieces of scalp and throwing his owner into the middle of next week. Round second ended as disastrously for Mr. Reed as the first, and he came out second best, minus the most of his clothes. The colt enjoyed the sport immensely and was ready for round three, but his competitor was too badly used to come to the scratch, and the colt carried off the honors of victory. The food allowance of that colt will be reduced until he manifests a more subdued disposition.
"Grafting" and Repeals
Legal Advertising to Metsker. the Straw that Broke cilman Dr. Deeds, moved that it be passed and on roll call all the councilmen voted for it excepting Mr. Ness. The mayor declared the resolution adopted and then lost no time in handing his veto to the clerk which follows: Presented to Mayor May 13, 1907, and a resolution of the same tenor under the same conditions having been heretofore vetoed and the reasons therefor fully stated. I now submit my disapproval of this resolution for the reasons heretofore stated. Harley A. Logan, City Mayor. After reading the veto, Councilman Tanner moved to pass the resolution over the mayor's veto which was duly seconded and on roll call was passed by the necessary two-thirds vote, Dr. Deeds voting with the Republican members. Thus Metsker's graft has finally been thwarted and the citizens and taxpayers have once more gained a victory over kleptomania and pettifoggery. Council Proceedings. The city council met in session Monday evening, May 13th, with all members present. A petition for sidewalk on East Laporte street, signed by Messrs. Bollman and Leland. was referred to committee for investigation. The appointment of Geo. A. Williams by Mayor Logan, as night policeman, from the first Tuesday in May, 1907, until the first Tuesday in May, 1908, was sanctioned by the council, and his bond was accepted. T. L. Ritchey, petitioned to tap sewer near his residence, and same was granted. Then came a petition signed by Adam Wise, W. H. Love and Ed Rogers, to extend the water mains on East Williams' street to Minor street. This was referred to committee on water works. The resolution passed Nov. 27, 05, providing that all legal publications be printed in the Democrat, was repealed a few weeks ago, but Mayor Logan vetoed the repeal. It was passed over his veto Monday night, however, by a 4 to 1 vote. This shows Metsker what the council thinks. The Pennsylvania company report that the subject of a Fifth street crossing watchman is being looked after. How much longer we wonder? The treasurer's report for April was Cash on hand $5837.95 Amount disbursed 3143.82 Balance on hand $2694.13 The superintendent of water works reports that the work on the wells is progressing, that the shallow wells have been abandoned, and that the city is now being supplied with water from deep wells. He advises that iron mains be substituted for wooden ones on Garro street, so they may settle before that street is paved, if it ever is paved. The petitions of Mrs. Koontz, and Emanuel Price for water, were referred to water works committee. Street commissioner's report was received and placed on file. The committee on finance reported Cash on hand $12886.62 Amount disbursed 1755.82 Balance on hand $11130.80 A resolution was passed providing that $4000 be paid to each of the banks on city indebtedness. The matter of surface water on South Plum street, was referred to committee on sewers and drains, with power to take any action for relief, they deem necessary. A number of sidewalks were reported in bad condition, and several were reported necessary. The clerk was ordered to notify owners to begin the construction of these same. Several of the directors and friends of the Mutual Telephone Co, were in attendance, and asked the council to grant their franchise. These people are getting justifiably impatient, as the franchise has been considered by the council for nearly a month. The council however, agreed to be ready to act finally upon the matter, at an adjourn meeting, set for Friday next. The prospect for a franchise seemed favorable. The resolution to condemn part of O. P. Bair's land as a necessary addition to grave yard, had been demurred against by court. However the resolution stands and will be carried out. Business was then adjourned until Friday night. Trust to Nature. A great many Americans, both men and women, are thin, pale ana puny, with poor circulation, because they have 111tieated their stomachs by hasty eating or too much eating, by consuming alcoholic beverages, or by too close confinement to home, office or factory, and In consequence the stomach must be treated In a natural way before they can rectify their earlier mistakes. The muscles in many such people, In fact In every weary, thin and thin-blooded person, do their work with great difficulty. As a result fatigue comes early, is extreme and lasts long. The demand for nutritive aid is ahead of the supply. To insure perfect health every tissue, ' bone, nerve and muscle should take from the blood certain materials and return to It certain others. It is necessary to prepare the stomach for the work of taking up from the food what is necessary to make good, rich, red blood. We must go to Nature for the remedy. There were certain roots known to the Indians of this country before the advent of the whites which later came to the knowledge of the settlers and which are now growing rapidly in professional favor for the cure of obstinate stomach and liver troubles. These are found to be safe and yet certain in their cleansing and Invigorating effect upon the stomach, liver and blood. These are: Golden Seal root. Queen's root, Stone root, Bloodroot, Mar.drake root. Then there is Black Cherrybark. The medicinal principles residing in these native roots when extracted with glycerine as a solvent make the most reliable and efficient stomach tonic and liver invigorator, when combined In Just the right proportions, as In Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. Where there is bankrupt vitality such as nervous exhaustion, bad nutrition and thin blood, the body acquires vigor and the nerves, blood and all the tissues feel the favorable effect of this sovereign remedy. Although some physicians nave been aware of the high medicinal value of the above mentioned plants, yet few have used pure glycerine as a solvent and usually the doctors prescriptions called for the ingredients in varying amounts. With alcohol. The "Golden Medical Discovery" is a scientific preparation compounded of the glyceric extracts of the above mentioned vegetable Ingredients and contains ne alcohol or harmful habit-forming drugs. DEATH'S "BLACK PALL.
Thirty-One Killed in Wreck of Special Tiain. Santa Barbara, Cal., May 12. While hurrying northward over the Coast line of the Southern Pacific Railroad yesterday afternoon homeward boundt after a week of fraternizing and fiesta in Los Angeles, 145 Shriners of Isma'ia Temple of Buffalo and Rajah Temple, of Reading, with their families and friends, were hurled into the midst of death, when their, special train, running fifty miles an hour, struck a defective switch at Honda, a lonely station on the sand wastes of the Pacific beach, derailing the train, smashing the coaches into flinders, killing thirty-one almost instantly and injuring more than a score of others. The bodies of twenty-five in the morgue of Santa Barbara this afternoon and ten more at San Luis Obispo. The injured; many of whom are terribly hurt and will propably die, are in two sanitariums at San Luis Obispo. The wreck occurred exactly at 2:35 o'clock, one hour and forty-five minutes after the conclave visitors, forming a merry party, had spent all the morning sightseeing in Santa Barbara. The statement is made that the train was making a terrific speed when it struck the defective track and this is borne out by the fact that it covered the sixty-one miles of curves and crooked track between her and Honda in exactly one hundred minutes. There was no warning of the impending calamity. The special plunged upon the defective switch and in an instant the big locomotive.baggage car, diner and Pullman coupled with it were hurled together in a huje heap of wreckage. The engine shot forward on the broken track, tearing up the rails and tics and twisting the huge iron spans into fish-hooks. The baggage car half buried itself in the sand on the right side of the locomotive. It was smashed almost to kindling wood. The dining: car in which there were thirty people, eating: their noonday meal, leaped into the air and was thrown directly on top of the demolished locomotive. Nearly every per son in this coach was instantly killed scores were scalded by steam escaping from disconnected pipes in the kitchen of the diner. The terror and turmoil of the scene was indescribable. Many of those who escaped instant death by the-first im pact were crushed by the rear coaches hurled upon the wreckage. Others, pinioned in the debris, were roasted alive. Meeting of Telephone Men. Development of a plan to cement 7,000 telephone companies of the United Spates and Canada into one gigantic organization is expected to follow the gathering in Chicago next month of 1,000 managers and presi dents of the interested companies The men will come as delegates to the convention of the International Independent Telephone association to continue three days from June 4 at the Auditorium hotel. Jndepenent telephone associations of thirty state, with approximately $250,000.000 invested, are to send delegations to the convention to urge forward the movement to unite. Mrs. Sage Gives to Y. M.
