You will rernemlor it was all sown to wheat. Well, I finished threshing yesterday, and received from It an average of 4314 bushels per acre testing Clt.j pounds per stroked bushel. The wheat Is the best sample I have ever raised so uniform and even in size. You may know, it was a sool sample when I tell you that I have already sold 2.000 bushels of it for seed to my neighbors. This year has been ray best effort in farming during my life. My wheat totalled Ö.2S0 bushels and my oats neuly 5,000. If you remember I pointed out to yon a half-section lylnp just west of our house and joining my upper quarter on the south, which I said I should have in order to make one of the best farms In Western Canada. I am very plad to be able to tell you that I now own that' half-section. My ambition now Is to be able to market 20.000 bushels of wheat next year. If some of thos :ood honest Iloo.siers could have been with me during the last two weeks and could have seen the, golden grain rushing down tbe spout into my wazon and then could have seen It In great piles in my granaries. I may just say that I hare done all my farming with eight head of horses and one hired man except during harvest and threshing. (rood dairymen have round that silos which will bold 200 tons of silage can be built for $300, and that with the grain, dry feed ami pasture this will carry twenty cows through the year. giving thirty to forty pounds per day of silage. Alfalfa hay or clover should be a part of tbe ration to-supply the protein, or as another puts it: ' "Silage and bran fed in morning, fol lowed by a feed of clover or alfalfa hay, with another feed of silage and bran in the evening with a feed of clover h2y tbe last thing at night, is tte feeding plan of many a successful dairyman." Some of the most successful dairy farmers have adopted the plan of Inn ing their cows freshen In the fall fro-.ii September to November. The advantage of this plan is that the best flow of milk Is then secured during the. winter when pri es of butter and cream are higher than at any other time. Then again. If they be turned out to pasture In spring and early summer the fresh feed 'IH increase the flow of milk for two or three months, then thee mav be dried off during the last half of July, and during the period whi pastures are bad and the milk Mow is ..aturally the smallest they will be resting from their labors. Fkill In handling the cow will add 10 to 20 per cent to her returns during . th year." Soft ProlfPforn. (Jreen crops, such as rye and crimson clover, save loss of valuable, fertilizer In the soil, for the reason that they act as a covering in winter, and also - because, through the agency of their rods, they retain plant food that would be lost to tbe soil whrti it I? oxpo.-ed to the effects of rain and melt-' ing snows. They are grown at a season of the year when the land is not required for other crops, and, unlike red clover, they can lo seeded in the fall, being ready as green manurial crops when the fanner desires the land for corn. Rye makes not only early spring pasture, but is also a late pasture crop In the fall. It Is the last grorn food that disappears before winter and the first to come In the spring, and Is also one of nature's soil proteciors. It Is true that If the farmer plows the rye under he will have no grain or straw, but. outside of the cost of the seed and preparing the ground, tbe rye crop costs almost nothing. It is not as defir?.ble a crop for manurial purposes as crimson clover, but many farmers find it excellent, however. If straw is an object, rye will le generous, as the farmer can use rye for grazing purposes and also secure a crop of straw and grain later. Within the past quarter of a century it has been demonstrated that the saving of plant food In the soil by the use of winter coverers Is an important Item alone, and nature always nims to cover the soil as a protection. It is a fact, also well known, tbat when the land is left In fallow it gains in fertility, and this can happen in no possible manner except through the agency of plants tbat spring up and protect the land In fciimnier and win tcr.

"It Is remarkable how many really Jeautiful flowers are discarded because ordinarily they are classed as weeds," says a gardner at the Washington Dotanical Garden. , He had some spare land at his command, and a taste for experimenting started his "weed garden," which turned out to be a great success. He does not know the Latin names of all the outcasts he has gathered In, but he had been noticing for a long time all the wild things that "just grew" around his flower beds, with the result that he decided to gather in the ones that appealed to him most strongly and transplant them in a garden of their own. 'The main reason," he says, 'that they, attract so little notice when growing by the wayside Is that they are not massed and arranged as flowers would be to get the best effect Now that Is what I have done. A wild flower, or a weed, as It is scornfully called, that is too fragile to be thought much of will make a delicate, feathery mass which will be '' vastly admired when planted, together by tbe score or more. Even such a vile thing as the ragweed," concluded the gardener, "is worthy of admiration if you happen to look at it aright, and It Is finely effective as foliage for cut flowers." This advanced gardener provided for a suc-eession of blossoms from dandelions to golden rod and late fall grasse. and nothing has repaid his efforts with better results than these absolutely free flowers.
