THE PROGRESS OF THE CANADIAN WEST.
Xearljr 200,000 of an Increase In j Canadian Immigration In lOOO. The progress of a new country cannot be better ascertained than by noting ) the increase or railroad mileage In Its , j translocation system, and judged by . j this standard, the Canadian West leads j all the countries iu the world during ( the current year Thirty years ago there was not one hundred miles ot railroad west of the Great Lakes, and very little prospect of a transcontinental route for many years to come, but by the end of 1SS5 the Canadian Pacific Railway was within measurable distance of completion, and last year, twenty years later, fully ti.OOO miles of railroad traversed the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. In the past year the work of railroad construction has been vigorously prosecuted, and by the end of lt, some 5,(XiO miles of completed railroad has been added, making a total of fully ll.COO miles in the three great grain prefacing provinces of Canada. Such ac increa.e in the transportation facilities of the country is bound to make good times not only In the districts where the railroads are being built, but throughout the entire west Allowing 520,000 a mile for construction, the sum of $100.000,000 will be put in circulation, and this in itself should cause good times to prevail In a land where work is plentiful, wages ire high, and the cost of living is moderate. But the building of -tew railroads through Western Canada means a greater benefit to the country than merely the money put in circulation by the cost of construction. Additional railway building means the opening of new agricultural districts and an additional area under crop, a largely Increased output of grain to foreign markets with consequent financial returns; the erection of elevators and the growth of villages, towns and cities ; and everything else that makes for the progress of national life and the opening up of additional thousands of free homesteads so extensively advertised by the Canadian government agent, whose address appears elsewhere. It w;as stated -on the floor of the Canadian Parliament recently by a prominent representative that ten years from now would see the bulk of the population of Canada residing west of the Great Lakes, and if the work of railway building during the present year is any criterion, the prophecy made by the Canadian statesman may be easily fulfilled inside of the time stated. During the present year no less than 183,064 persons have found homes In the Canadian West, of whom 57,71K were Americans who have seen the great possibilities of this new West, and have decided to cast in tneir lot with it. Certainly, our neighbor north of the 40th parallel Is making i great record, and deserves the succes. that appears to be coming its way. How He Scored. Gen. DOCTORS MISTAKES Are said often to be buried six feet under ground. But many times women call on their family physicians, suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia, another from heart disease, another from liver or kidney disease, another from nervous prostration, another with pain here and there, and in this way they present alike to themselves and their easy-going or qverbnsy doctor, separate diseases, for which he, assuming them to bo such, prescribes his pills and potions In reality, they aro all only bymptiims caused by some uterine disease, The'prtician.xnorant of the cause of suflermgYfcVTPS up iStreatment until large bills are nnide. It has been well said, that "a disease known Is half cured." Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription is a scientific medicine, carefully devised by an experienced and" skillful physician, and adapted to woman's delicate system. It is made of native American medicinal roots and 1 perfectly harmless in its effects in unj cm"t or tiic twviTj?
As a powerful Invigorating tonic "Favorite Prescription" imparts strength to the whole system and to the oreans distinctly feminine in particular. For overworked, "worn-out," run-down." debilitated teachers, milliners, dressmakers, seamstresses, "shop-ffirls," house-keepers, nursing mothers, and feeble women generally, I)r. Pierce's Favorite Prescription is the greatest earthly boon, being uncqualed as an appetizing cordial and restorative tonic. As a soothing and strengthening nervine "Favorite Prescription" is uncqualod and is invaluable in allaying and subduing nervous excitability, irritability, nervous exhaustion, nervous prostration, neuralgia, hysteria, spasms, St. Vitus's dance, and other distressing, nervous symptoms commonly attendant upon functional and organic disease of the uterus. It induces refreshing sleep and relieves mental anxiety and despondency. Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets invigorate the stomach, liver and bowels. Ono to throe a dose. Easy to take as candy. Moki Deaoties. The average Mokl woman Is, perhaps Invariably, not large or obese. Short In stature, plump and round of form, of pleasing countenance, with beautiful jet-black hair banged at the eyes, when clad In tasteful and colored blanketry she presents a picture fair Indeed to see. The manner of wearing the hair distinguishes the married woman from the virgin. The latter wears her black tresses gracefully done up In a large round coil several Inches In diameter over each ear and projecting out from the head somewhat The effect is delightfully novel, and coupled with the fresh and youthful appearance of the girls makes them special objects of interest. They used to be termed "sldewheelers," from their mode of dressing the hair. Maxwell's Talisman. TORTURED WITH GRAVEL. Since Uslns Doan'i Kidney P1IU Not m Slnsle Stone IIa Formed. Capt S. L. One firm In Bangor, Me., has agents all over northern Maine buying deer hides, and thousands of the hides are received there every season and shipped to Boston to be tanned. It 13 only within the !ast year or two that the traffic in deer hides has reached large proportions. A few years ago a deer hide of the best quality could be bought for half a d liar and the hides were thought of so little account that unless the man whe killed the deer had some use for the skin he threw It away. ' The deer hides are now used by the manufacturers of gloves and other articles and there Is a steady demand for them. The demand is shown by the fact that the hides have Increased 'almost threefold In value during the las two years. The hide of the Maine deer has been found to be excellent material for making gloves, pocketbooks, bindings and many small leather articles. There is a good profit in these articles for the manufacturers because the deer hides can be bought cheaper than almost any other kind of leather that would answer the purpose. Those who are aware of the large traffic In deer hides in Maine fear it may moan another danger to the bi game which roams the Maine woods, i. dealer in hMes must have a license which costs ?5. Untier the protection of this license the dealer can buy as many deer hides as he can get hold of. Therefore the question Is asked whether with the dealers offering good prices for deer hides and having agents all over the hunting regions buying up the hides, an Incentive will be furnished to prompt men to hunt deer for the money there is in them. CRIED EASILY. NerrMt Woman Stopped Coffee and Quit Other Things. No better practical proof that coffee I a drug can bo required than to note how the nerves become unstrung In women who habitually drink it The stomach, too, rebels at being continually drugged with coffee and tea they both contain the drug caffeine. Ask your doctor. An Iowa woman tells the old story thus : "I had ued coffee for six years aud was troubled with headaches, nervousness and dizziness. In the morning, upon rising I used to belch up a sour fluid, regularly. "Often I got so nervous and miserable I would cry without the least reason, and I noticed my eyesight was getting poor. "After using Postum a while, I observed the headaches left me and soon the belching of sour fluid stopped (water brash from dyspepsia). I feel decidedly dlffcre.it now, and I am convinced that It is because I stopped coffee and began to use Postum. I can sco better now, my eyes are stronger. It is as necessary to train the family dog as it is to train the children. If boys are required to handle guns, it is well that they be taught how. It is surprising how many men get killed In the careless'handllng of guns. Pigs may try to become a little too familiar, but that is a good falling. It Is better to have them too tame than so wild they cannot be handled. ETcry farm should have a small flock of sheep on it to keep down the weeds and turn them Into dollars. Sheep will eat 4S9 different kinds of weeds. It requires as much feed and care to keep scrubs as first-class animals, trad as the improved animal will mature earlier and bring 'better prices, the scrub cannot Jiecessarlly compete when profit Is the object. A business must stand or fall on the merits of its chief product; the by-products may pay more or less, but tho business is not conducted for the sake of the by-products. Dairying is no exception to this rule. High-priced labor cannot be made to count on low-priced land. On lowpriced laud the owner must perform his own labor. At all times it will be necessary to keep the cost of produc tion down as low as iwssible. One of the greatest troubles in feed lng poor grain is not so much In the loss, as compared with good grain, but In the fact that overheated or musty grain causes many of the diseases which ordinarily affects fowls. E. L. Stewart, owner of an orchard near Prosser, south of Spokane, sold on an average of $440 worth of apples from each acre of his fifty-acre tract. In one instance he secured between 4,0QQ and 5,000 boxes of apples off six acres. Occasionally a horse will for?n habit of chewing the ends of the halter sirap and such other parts of the har ness as he has access to. Equal parte of cayenr.e pepper and fish oil applied to such straps will cure the worst strap chewcr. Pig3 will begin to eat with the sows when two or three weeks old. If get ting plenty of exercise, it will not hurt them to crack a little corn. But ihe Ideal feed is skim milk and shorts in the form of a thin slop. It will make them grow and not get overfat. Lambs f hould be weaned at about 3 months and put on fresh clover pas ture. Each day some grain should be given in the trough, to make growth j and overcome the check t,hat might be caused by weaning. One or two good quiet ewes left with the flock will keep the lambs quiet. The two-row cultivator Is here to stay, and is one of the implements that hurries up the cultivation when tho hay is gettiLg ripe. A field of corn that can be cultivated In one day has f the advantage over a field which re quires two to go over it To the corn grower this is evident. Recent reports tell of the great Epread of the San Jose scale. This ruinous pest will sweep away the trees wherever a community neglects it and permits it to spread. It Is po?Ible to check it and while the checking may be costly, it is far less costly than is the destruction of the fruit and other trees. Some breeders claim that chickens from eggs laid earliest in the season are the most likely to live and thrive after hatching. It is claimed that continuous laying enfeebles the hen's system to luch an extent that the later eggs in the ppjing litters are not so well endowed with vigor. Horse breeding is being greatly encouraged by the government in Japan, and $375,000 has lately been made available by the Mikado's government for the establishment of public studs at various points In tlu? Island empire, and Jt is proposed to begin at once the purchase of 1,500 stallions to be placed in these public depots. Poultry and dairy farming are a good combination. In these days of improved dairy inetho.ds when the cream is separated from the milk Immediately after being drawn from the cow, the dairy farmer has plenty of skim milk,' which Is an Ideal food for poultry, and there Is more money In feeding It to the hens than to the hogs? Pumpkins are good feed for lambs In the fall, especially when they are trc, ubled with paper skin, caused by worms In the Intestines. They will eat them if they are sliced or cut and Bprinkled with salt, but It is better to piovlde flat-bottomed troughs, with compartments each being large enough to receive the half of a pumpkin cut in such fashion as to have the pieces He flat, with the ln?lde uppermost. Parasites develop rapidly and should never be allowed to exist If possible, as the sooner the work of stamping out the cause of the disease Is done, the less labor required. Minute fungi should be carefully sought and fought with the spraying mixtures. The spores Increase so rapidly that a day's clay may result In heavy loss. Each form has Its own habits, requiring prompt and hasty work for Its suppression. Nearly all plant diseases are the result of fungus growth. To give a horse a drench, placi a stout roie In his mouth and are.und upper Jaw. Back him up In a stall or corner." Throw loose end of rope over beam overhead and let another man j hold It taut or loose as required. Stand j tri a bvr and lift horse's head up. Take
in slack of the rope and hold head In position. The mouth of a long-necked
ottle, containing the drench, should e loosely placed in the horse's nostril. and contents allowed to, run out. Not a drop will be spilled, if properly managed, as th animal Is obliged to swal low at once. Hot Water to Kill Dorem. Water at a temperature of from ISO to 140 degrees will kjll most insects and will not injure vegtable life. Act ing on the idea it has been suggested that hot water be thrown up Into the, tree, of somewhat higher temperature than is needed, so as to allow for it to cool. The difficulty with this plan Is that the orifice where the borer enters Is so near the ground that the soil has to be dug away to get under it. A flexible wire can be inserted much more .easily than to force hot water upward into the orifice the borer has made. Th wire will also more certainly do Its work and by having a barb at the end the borer may be withdrawn. But tiiere are many places where the hot water insecticide may be applied more easily and safely than any other. Best Time to Trane. The best time for pruning appl trees is oa warm days from January to May. More can be accomplished in the longer days of March, April and May, but many prefer to go through the orchard on the crust of a deep snow. The time of year when the cut Is made has little effect on the readiness with which the wound heals, but more care is necessary to prevent injury to trees pruned when the wood Is' frozen. A wound made by removing a limb heals best if the cut is made close to the trunk or branch. A stub two or three inches long does not heal, and becomes a lodging place for spores of fungi and bacteria, which cause decay and death of the tree. The splitting down of large limbs may often be avoided when pruning by sawing In from the under side first; but in every case see that the wound is left clean add smooth. Wounds should be covered Immediately with a coat of paint, shellac or grafting wax to keep out the moisture and the spores before j mentioned. Sheep Flocks FiUIIng OfT. One of the most remarkable facts of modern times Is the lessening number c the sheep on the continent, and also though not to uch a large extent, in Great Britain. For the last thirty years sheep have been decreasing, one of the chief causes assigned being the decrease of the pastoral population, anl the land In many cases being put to other uses, says th- Butcher of Brussels Belgium. The following are the figures for the last ten years: Tenjears Last. Germany ......... 24,t'J9.000 O.C92.OO0 Austria 5,020,000 2.621. 00 Denmark 1,549,000 877,000 France .k 22.61(1.000 . 17,104.000 Holland 81C.t00 654.OO0 Hungary 15.077,000 8.123,0n Italy 8.506.0OO 6.loo.000 Kussla 51.S22.000 45.40S.O00 Great Britain 30,830,000 20,105,000 These figures denote that sheep have diminished in ten years from 164,000,000 to, 121,000,000, a reduction of about 25 per cent. In some countries they have diminished more quickly than in others. Germany's supply, for Instance, has been reduced by CO per cent In ten years, and Austria's 45 per cent In France the decrease began in 1S73, and although not quite so pronounced as in the countries named. Is continuous and steady. The mutton supplies of Great Britain, although they all show a reduction, have been better maintained than In any other European country. Waiting Stock Fred. On many farms corn is grown, the grain harvested and farm animals turned in which simply destroys threefourt'JS of the entire crop. No improvement, no rotation, no care, no managemert. but a waste of valuable food, the only excuse for this wasteful system being that a profit can be derived with but little cost Whenever a better system Is practiced then begins enjoyment of profit and increase in every direction, all reaping a portion, from the landed proprietor to the humblest Individual In the community. This wasteful practice is not confined to any particular section, but to all portions of the country where corn is grown. The root of the evil Is the desire of those who grow corn to avoid labor; and this saving of labor by allowing corn fodder to waste has brought more farms under mortgages than anything else, while those who practice such methods only deprive themselves of greater gains and better results that could be obtained by the required labor and Its careful application. Corn fodder Is one of the valuable products of the farm, having a practical feeding value of two-thirds to threequarters that of good hay and sometimes more, and the fodder, corn and straw wasted is sufficient to nearly double the stock now kept on many farms. I'pltoniist. Mixing Manure with Soil. The process of decomposition may be carried on In the presence of pure earth only, or of earth intermingled with cut clover, leaves, etc., or In the presence of muck, which Is an assemblage of inert vegetable matter, and compost dung hills may be formed according to these methods. The proportions between the Ingredients are fixed by no determinate laws, and consequently great liberty is allowable to the operator. In fact, such Is the uncertainty of the composition that almost every farmer adopts one peculiar to himself, and with equal success. No one need follow Implicitly any rules which have been laid down, but may vary and multiply his experiments according to the suggestions of circumstances or the dictates of convenience. The only use of Intermixing the soil with the manure Is to Imbibe the gaseous ejements of vegetable life and hinder their dissipation. If there be much soil these elements will be diffused through it with less density and compression ; if lltth, It will bo more abundantly saturated and enriched with the nutritive vapors. The farmer who arrests the rank vapors which emanate from decaying animal and vegetable matter, and Instead of permitting them to pass into and contaminate the air he breathes, treasures up the Invisible particles with which they are laden and applies them to feed useful vegetables, causes the atmosphere to be healthy and his plants to be thrifty by the same means.

There are two classes of remedies; those of known quality and which aro permanently beneficial in effect, acting gently, in harmony with uature, when nature needs assists ance; and another class, composed of preparations of. unknown, uncertain and inferior character, fecting tempo- , rarily, but injuriously, as a result of forcing the natural functions unnecessarily. One of the most exceptional of the remedies of known quality and excellence is the ever pleasant Syrup of Figs, manufactured by the California
Fig Syrup Co., which represents the active principles of plants, known to act most beneficially, in a pleasant syrup, in which the wholesome Californian blue figs are used to contribute their rich, yet delicate, fruity flavor. It is the remedy of all remedies to sweeten and refresh and cleanse the system gently and naturally, and to assist one in overcoming consti-

of articles of exceptional merit, and whe cb not lack courage to go elsewhere when a dealer offers an imitation of any well known article; but, unfortunately, there are some people who do not know, and who allow, themselves to be imposed upon. They cannot expect its beneficial effects if they do not get the genuine remedy. No one can be happy, light-hearted and healthy with a body full of blood that cannot do its duty to every part because of its impurity; therefore, the first and most important work in hand is to purify the blood so that every organ will get the full benefit of a healthy circulation. There is no remedy wj know of so good as that old family remedy, Ilrandreth's Pills. Each pill contains one grain of the solid extract -of sarsaparilla blended with two grains of a combination of pure and mild vegetable products, making it a blood purifier unexcelled in character. One or two taken every night for awhile will produce surprising results. Iirandreth's Pills have been in use for over a century and are sold in every dru? and medicine store, plain or sugar-coated.
