Elmer Lawrence has gone to Kane county, Illinois, to husk corn. Miss Margaret Kennedy was home from South Bend over Sunday. The Rochester basket ball team defeated Argos last Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. William Gastell of East Laporte street, are on the sick list. Everybody did not come home to vote as they always do in presidential years. i I Forbes the seed man, transacted business at Grovertown and Hamlet today. Boys & Co. say they made all this trouble in the Republican party be cause Hendricks did not get the postoffiCi. George Vinall returned to Elkhart Monday noon after spending Saturday and Sunday with his family in Plymouth. Recollect that it is not Hendricks but the opponents of Hendricks that kicked up the political rumpus in Marshall county. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac N. Gerard of South Bend, with their son Charles. spent Saturday ami Sunday with rel atives at Tyner. The wholesale grocery house in Elkhart in which Messrs. Vinall and Southworth are interested, is doing a large business. Harley Rodgers was here from Tip pecanoe over Sunday. Harley is ' a straight Republican and went home to vote the elephant ticket. How little there may be in a name is freshly indicated by the fact that the Rev. Mr. Booze is delivering tem perance addresses in Oregon. Eber Burch of Hamlet, spent Sun day night in Plymouth and went from here to his farm in Polk township but he went to Hamlet to vote. Several people have called to ask whether Metsker will want to go into the pulpit to reply to Rev.' J. S. Crowder's Sunday morning sermon. The many friends of James Keiscr were glad to know that he could go to church Sunday and is able to walk down town when the weather is nice Jim Goodrich and Carl Riddick mismanaged the Republican campaign in Indiana from the day they were "chosen until the closing of the poll on election day. If the supreme court decided against Hendricks , why does (Garn have to pay the costs? Think of that when somebody is trying to cram a lie down your throat. By reason of voting machines being used in the state of New York, the result of the election in that. state is usually known in Plymouth before G o'clock Tuesday evening. Judge Bernetha last Friday refused to mandate the election commissioners and taxed up the costs against the complainant .Samuel Schlosse. Another victory for Hendricks. The first duty of Republicans is to vote to preserve the Republican party. A vote for bad men, reckless men, machine men will lr.il the party quicker than Democrats can kill it. With John the Baptisf and Saul of Tarsus both on; the stage we may look forward to the time when Luther and Calvin and others will be utilised to give us a new modern drama. Mrs. Will Harness and" children have returned to Hamlet after a visit at the home of her father, Fred Schultz. Her sister, Miss Jennie Schultz, went, home with her for a visit at Hamlet. We lift our hat to the Bremen Enquirer. It scooped all the papers by giving the decision of the election commissioners a day in advance. Did it get its information from Congress man Brick? The only thing that is worse than Democratic hard t-mes. is machine rulii like that f Tammany, Piatt, Dcpew, Quay and the system that Brick, .Goodrich & Co., are trying to inaugurate in Indiana. Private Wagner, an artilleryman ip Havana, i to be tried by court-martial for having written in verse a criticism of his rations. Plans are being made for a tenstory office building to be erected at the northeast corner of Main and Washington streets in South Bend by J. M. Studebaker, sr. J. F. Langenbaugh has been busy with truants since the country scho ,1 jpened but has most of them in school now without making arrests He is an excellent truant officer. Starke county reports a big potato crop. The North Judson News re ports one farmer inWayne township who dug 323 bushels to the acre, and a neighbor's crop averaged nearly 400 bushels. A yellow campaign in New York and a yellow peril in the schools of San Francisco mark the sere and yel low season, but there is nothing yel low about the common sense of the American people. Money cannot purchase the Republican party neither can a majority of the party be deceived very long by corrupt politicians. The party will live respected after it has been cleais ed of böodlcrs, vote buyers and disorganizers. Lawrence Carvey has resigned his position at the post-office and will work for the Malleable Steel Range company of South Bend. He is a good man in any position. A young man upon whom dependence can always be placed. We never saw a man more com pletely disgusted than Merrill Moore: the attorney of the state committee was when he saw the' littleness and foolishness of State Chairman Good rich fully exposed by evidence over the signature of Goodrich. The wages of all employes on the Pennsylvania railroad system on lines east ami west of Pittsburg are to be increased. Nearly 150,000 men will be affected. It is probable the increase will be effective Dec. 1, but on account of the detail work to be done before a sweeping order is issued it may be later. , . - ' David Homan, of Milford, has teen experimenting with peanuts this sea son and finds they will grow and ma ture in Kosciusko county as well ain the southern states. He planted two rows across his lot, and gave them only ordinary care and thinks now he wftl have about one bushel and a half of nuts. Mr. Sheppard will read a paper on Marriage and Divorce, the annual election of officers will be held, and arrangments made for the Thanksgiving service. A full attendance is urged. The lying telephone messages sent to every section of the county by Postmaster Yockey Friday evening that the Republican ticket had been withdrawn were known to be false ty every intelligent voter. No man, no court, nor any other authority can withdraw a ticket or a name from a ticket after it has been filed three days. After waiting for years, unable to work, with little money, and compelled ot employ the strictest economy, John F. Finngan, of Indianapolis, a veteran of the civil war, was overjoyed Friday when he was notified that his claim for back pay in pension money had been granted and that he would receive not less thjvi $3,000. The man whose home has been in Marshall county longer than any other man now living, was in Plymouth Saturday. He said "I will vote the county ticket under the emblem of the elephant and I will do what I can to defeat A. L. Brick, who has shown that hf is not a Republican, because he har joined and assisted a gang of belters to disrupt the Republican party in Marshall county.
William Wagner is improving
slowly. Mrs. Grace Hutchinson" is visiting her sister at Kalamazoo Mich. Washington Kelley has returned from a visit to his farm near Ober, Starke county. Mrs. Bert Stansbury and children went to South Bend Thursday for a visit of a few days. Mrs. McCance has gone to Chicago to spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. William Miller. Only a small crowd went from this city to Argos to hear Vice President Fairbanks speak Thursday. Mrs. George A. Williams has re turned from a visit with her son, Omer Williams and family in Chicago. Farmers will soon have gathered and cribbed the finest and largest crop of corn ever produced in Marshall county. The ladies of the Christian church have moved their rummage sale to the room east of Young's barber shop on Laporte street. Albert Weber says if the same crowd that hauled his wagon off Wednesday night will come back a year hence he wil pay them for it. Adam Dinsmore of Union town ship, was a Plymouth visitor today He is one of the staunch Republican of that town.!iip who . ever follows bolters. Mrs. Elizabeth Walter Gibbons aged 77 years and 11 months, died Oct. 27 of apoplexy at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S .A. Shaw, north of Culver. Mrs. Gideon W. Blain and little daughter Eleanot, have returned to Indianapolis a.fter a visit of. several days with her parents and other rcl stives in Plymouth. James R. Vinnedge is going to Wisconsin to spend .the winter, but we would not be afraid to wager a penny that he will be back in Marshall county long before the good old summer time is here. A geologist has found in Texas the tooth of an elephant that is supposed to have lived there 12,000 years ago This symbol seems to indicate that at one time Texas enjoyed the blessings of Republican rule." Very little property was destroyed in this city on Hallow'en. We an glad to announce that the girls and boys were almost all of them out for fun and not to do any thing that would do much harm to any one. Spvwiseller, the man who tried to kill his wife in Tippecanoe township and then shot himself through the neck, is improving under the care of Sheriff Steiner and Dr. Eley at the county jail and will get well if no unexpected complications develop. Six hunters were killed in the Maine ' woods during the last two days of the hunting season which re cently opened there. But there i one encouraging thought which aris es in this connection. Nobody i5 compelled to go to Miine woods to hunt. A New York girl in a recent con test wrote 2,467 words on a typewrit er in half a nhour, making only five errors. There are plenty of peopleyes, some women, even who could not do any better than that in talking matches. A Pennsylvania man, not a farmer, bought last spring a sixty-eight acre tract of "abandoned" land for 1,700 and raised 4,300 bushels of potatoes on twenty acres of it, which he sold for $2,400 or $700 more than his farm cost .And yet we hear every now and then that farming doesn't pay. The decision of the. supreme court knocks the bolters entirely out if their opinion as given outside the real decision is followed. They say the men that bolt from an organi zation cannot claim to be the organi zation ho matter how large a major ity theyhave. The men that stand by the organization, if only a small min ority constitute the party and are en titled to the party emblem. Judge Joseph E. Gary, oldest mem of the Cook county bench in point of service and years, and the jurist who presided at the trial of the anarchists folllowing the Haymarket riot, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock. He was 85 years oH and had been attending to his official work as late as Tuesday of this week He was quite weak, however, and death was caused as much by age a by any specific ailment. Jerry Woodward, who lives in Mishwaka, is known over northern Indiana as the "Indiana Peppermint King." He, with his brothers, Walter and William has about 320 acres in mint, and this year the Woodward crop ran more than 4,000 pounds. The Woodwards are the largest growers in Indiana, the second largest in this country, and possibly in the world The largest grower in the United States is A. Todd, of Kalamazoo, who generally has COO to 800 acres in mint. 17 You had a M TJEdBCI As loeq this fetlow and bad GflDQE fag Tonsiline WOULD QUICKLY CURE IT. inwuin nrnmn in' i an Kina ry qmel It od I mMftW, or-f all: and ipc- r ear lor I arc 55outh. lloawenet. nJ Qx';ny. The Best Guaranty of Merit Is Open Publicity. Every bottle of Dr. Pierce's worldfamed medicines leaving the great laboratory at Buffalo, N.Y., has printed upon its wrapper all the Ingredients entering Into its composition. This fact alone places Dr. Pierce's Family Medicines in a class all by themselves. They cacnot be classed with patent or secret medicines because they are neither. This Is why so many unprejudiced physicians prescribe them and recommend them to their patients. They know what they are composed of, and that the ingredients are those endorsed by the most eminent medical authorities. The further fact that neither Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, the freat stomach tonic, liver invigorator, eart regulator and blood purifier, nor his "Favorite Prescription for weak, over
worked, broken-down, nervous women, contains any alcohol, also entitles them to a place all by themselves. Many years ago. Dr. Pierce discovered that chemically pure glycerine, of proper strength, is a better solvent and preservative of the medicinal principles residing In our Indigenous, or native, medi cinal plants than is alcohol; and, further more, that It possesses valuable medicinal properties of its own, being demulcent, nutritive, antiseptic, and a most efficient ant' ferment. Id either of the above medicines con tains alcohol, or any harmful, habltlorming drug, as win be seen from a glance at the formula printed on each bottle wrapper. They are safe to use and potent to cure. Not only do physicians prescribe the above, non-secret medicines largely, but the most intelligent DeoDle emDlov them people who would not think of using me ordinary patent, or secret medicines.
