Industry Now Said to Be Making Profit and Prog rm. Ostrich farming in the United States, although only In its infancy, is a profitable industry in southern and western parts of the country, and in the twentythree years since the first American os

trich farm was started the number of

ostriches has Increased to 2,200, according to the New York Tribune. For several years the breeding of birds was, of course, experimental, and it is only in the last six years that great progress has been made. About two-thirds of the birds are in Arizona, the remainder being in Arkansas, Florida and California. They can be- grown in any of the Southern States of this country, but thrive best in a dry, warm climate. In the incubation of the eggs the male takes a prominent part, covering the eggs fifteen or sixteen hours out f the twenty-four. He will usually goon the nest about five o'clock in the evening and remain there until 8 or S:."0 o'clock in the morning. It is thought that the color of the sexes has something to do with the development of this practice. The mr.le, being black, is not so easily seen at night, and the female, being nearly the color of sand, cannot be readiiy seen by daylight. The period of incubation is about forty-two days. Artificial incubation has also been successfully carried on. The usual ay to inclose an ostrich farm, fays Watson Fickrell in the Year Book of the Department of Agriculture, Is to use a woren-wire fence about five and a half feet high, with meshes small enough to keep out wolves and dogs. After ostriches are more than one year old no one should go among them without a brush or a stick in his hand, as he Is liable to injury unless he has something to drive or frighten the birds away. One of the best feeds for the ostrich is alfalfa, although the bird may be fed any kind of grain. African writers assert that ostriches will I've for years without water, but American farmers find that they will drink water freely every day if it is given to them. While the value of the ostrich as a domestic animal depends upon its production of feathers for ornamental purposes, its flesh is said to have been much relished by those who have eaten It. The eggs are excellent for making omelets, and one will make as much omelet as two and a half dozen hens eggs. A full-grown bird is worth $400 or more, but few of them are for sale at any price.

mplomacy. During the peace negotiations at Portsmouth last summer there vished the town a well-known American traveler, who for years had been boasting to his friends of his profound knowledge of the language and customs of Russia. When a man declares In this country

that he "knows Russian " there are few in a position successfully to contradict him. So the friends of the man in question had never been able to "call his bluff." Last summer, however, some one had learned of a meeting between the boastful person and Ilaron Kosen, the Kussian ambassador. Accordingly, the question was immediately put to the Muscovite whether the American had indeed a knowledge of the Russian language. At first the foreigner politely demurred the question, but, finally, when h was asked whether So-and-So was really much of a Russian scholar, the ambassador smilingly replied: "You mustn't say anything about It, but your friend is sufllciently well acquainted with Russian not to attempt to speak It." Eighty Thousand Person Hare Xovr Mastered International Lang-uance. The London Chamber of Commerco has put Esperanto among the subjects for examination In its educational department This international language, successor of the unlamented Volapuk, was Introduced to the world by Dr. Zamenhof, a doctor In Warsaw, Poland, in 18S7. His pamphlet, "An International Language, by Dr. Esperanto," published In that year, lay dormant for some ten years. It is said that SO.OOO persons can now read or write Esperanto, and there are some forty Journals and magazines and some 200 sock-ties or "centers" for propagating it. About half of the roots In Esperanto are of Latin origin, 23 per cent of English and 2." per cent of German. There Is no English q, w, or y in tho language. There are no silent letters. The accent is always on the syllable next to the last. At present, Fays Everybody's Magazine, Esperanto consists of about 1,000 roots and from 2,000 to 3,000 words. Dr. Zamenhof holds that by the use of some thirty prefixes and suffixes, 900 root words are enough. Its grammar ought to be learned In an hour by anybody who knows one of the Latin languages. There are no Irregular verbs (blessed be Esperanto!). The plural ends In y, nouns In o, adjectives In a. "Ino" Is the feminine ending. For example: "patro," father; "patrlno," mother. Will Esperanto go the way of Volapuk or will It prosper?
