For over sixty years doctors have endorsed Ayer's Cherry Pectoral for coughs, colds, weak lungs, bronchitis, consumption. You can trust a medicine the best doctors approve. U The affidavit that Garn made as published in last week's Trib- ' une which was duly acknowledged before county clerk John R. The South Rend Times i says cmplaints come from Indianapolis that the Democrats of that
congressional . district do . not care to defeat Jesse Ovcrstrcct for congress. It is -alleged that some sort of an understanding has been reached whereby the Democratic county . ticket is assured of considerable assis- ; tance from thc Goodrich and ; ' Fairbanks Republicans, in return for which thq Democrats - are. to put up some weakling .whom Overstreet can defeat without making much of an effort. All this may be mere balderdash, claptrap or flapdoodle, and again it may have some . . foundation in fact; - J Many practices which ten years ago five years ago, one year ' ago and even six months - aero were in favor, public opinion
, having no condemnation for
. n '. them, arc now held to be odious
and even criminal. This is per
haps the most notable develop ment of the day, namely, the ere
ation of a higher standard for the conduct of American 'x business. - The revelations of graft in the
' insurance and railroad compan
ies are a shock to national pride
and yet there is hardly an Amer-
ican who does not know that in
one form or another graft has en
- tered largelv into thc corporate
life as into the jolitical life of the country. The saving clause of
the situation is that it seems a passing phase in our national
progress. The optimist has rcas
on to rejoice that the national
conscience has been touched and that public opinion is establish
ing higher ideals. Jt jt j. Holiday for Postmasters.

Horses on the Increase. The horse perpetually discred
its the modern breed of prophets.
Every time anybody has made a new invention in transportation somebody has prognosticated "the passing of the horse."
It is said that when De Witt
Clinton managed to get the Erie
Canal open there were mourners
for the destruction of the use of the horse that they thought sure to follow. When the steam railway was made a success there was a death song for the horse sung by the stage drivers.
Then the bicycle was execrated because it was to do all the light work the horse had done
and the cable and trolley lines
were to shut the horse out of
strets and while relieving him of
certain forms of drudgery were
certain, in the prophets of horse-
dom's estimation, to degrade him
to swill care service alone. More recently the automobile has been hailed as absolutely sure to dis
place the horse from every service, even of the pleasure of racing.
Yet within ten years there has

Fifth Annual Sacred Concert. Tuesday evening August 14, will occur a sacred concert at the German church. The Lutheran and Episcopal congregations are joining forces in this mid-summer effort which promises to be a delightful treat to all music lovers, especially as it will be given with the pipe-organ, a feature everyone so much enjoy's. Mrs. Bertha McDonald of the Columbia School of Music,
whom Plymouth people will enjoy hearing again, has most kindly consented to sing; as has also Prof. Philip E. Baer, the operatic tenor, who is in the city this summer. Prof. Baer is the possessor of a remarkable voice and his numbers will be attractive additions to the program. Others whose presence will contribute greatly to the pleasure of the evening are Miss Hortense Drummond of South Bend, Mrs. Maud Houghton, Mrs. Emma
Yockey Hoham, Misses Vinall,
Hess, Wilson, Kuhn, Hoham and Dr. Ford Reynolds, Messrs.
Eldridge Thompson and Ralph Leonard.

Onion Line May Be Sold. There U now every reason to believe that the Vanderbilt railroad in
terests in northern Indiana will soon
be increased by a notable addition, that of the Chicago & Wabash Valely, or the Gifford Onion line which runs through Jasper and Lake counties. It is the most remarkable railroad in Indiana In that it was built wholly by one man and entirely at his own expense and without incurring a dollar of debt or issuing a bond; also, that fully 20 per cent of its present twenty-six miles and seven of its stations are on his own land. This man is Col. B. J. Gifford, who until lately owned 31,000 acres of land in Jasper county, but who recently sold about 8,000 acres.
3. Special school tax expendi
