Coal famines would not occur every winter if mine operators and railways and dealers would unite and provide against them. But coal famines make money for the mines, by increasing prices.

Each of the present Russian grand dukes is allowed to draw an income of a million dollars a year, which privilege began at the time of birth. But the outlook for the future is such that a grand duke who can draw his breath may consider himself in luck.

Committees of Congress. All indications point to the probability that the announcement of committees of the new House will be delayed until after the holidays, although the speaker may be able to announce them just before the holiday adjournment. The long delay in making up the committees means that Congress will do practically nothing until after New Year's. The Speaker is confronted with unusual embarrassments, owing to the very large number of new Republican members. Before he will undertake to assign them on comittees he will have to meet them personally, to study them and to decide for himself where they can serve to the best advantage. The Indiana delegation will give him very little cause for delay, as the assignments of nine of the thirteen Indiana Congressmen will remain practically the same as they were in the last Congress. Perplexing situations are presented in many States, however, and Uncle Joe does not intend to act hastily.

Wells Jones, a Confederate veteran, seventy-three years old, met death in a peculiar manner in a saloon at Jasper. He was boasting of his activity for one of his years, and he stepped on a bench to demonstrate it. The bench turned and threw him to the floor, fracturing his skull.

When corporations like the United States Steel corpoation and the New York Life Insurance company join hands with high-priced legislative bocdlers to secure the enactment of laws favorable to their interests the average policy holder. or stockholder cannot see much in it for him. That New York Life investigation is proving an excellent eye-opener to the general pubjic, which has been gulled too long, ...

A wave of crime seems to be sweeping over the country and daily the press dispatches tell stories of horrible murders. Civilized America, as a whole, holds up her hands in horror at atrocities in foreign lands, but at the same time the slaughter of innocents continues at home. We have not reached perfection in the matter of preventing crime.

The towns in the gas belt are now undergoing a sweating period. In the town of Marion 212 vacant houses are offered rent fret in order to hold the insurance and it is said about the same proportion is found in other cities in the belt. This is due to the gas giving out and the best manufacturing concerns moving to other localities where the tax rate is not so excessive. 17Congressman Brick does not seem very lucky in appointing postmasters that please everybody this year. It is said that the president will not re-appoint the man recommended at Goshen and the G. A. R. is making a united effort to prevent the appointment of the man recommended at Warsaw, while from various other points including South Bend, there comes a storm of dissatisfaction.

A woman beauty doctor, who is coming over from London on a mis sion in direct contradiction to a statement of Prince Louis that the American woman cannot be improved upon, says thai women can retain their beauty by thinking about it. The .trouble is they become ugly gloating over the fading charms of other women.

As one result of the colapse of the Rusian military prestige, we find England ppe of the leaders in a naval demonstration against the Turkish coast in the ffort to bring the Porte to its senses concerning the promised reforms in Macedonia. The period of Russian expansion is undoubtedly over for at least a century, and, since she can no longer "menace the road to India," England has no longer any motive for protecting the position of the Turk in Europe. If he is not good, he may find himself hurled back to Asia.

The best known pride to married happiftess is to hold the husband aa you won the lover by cheerfulness of disposition, patience and keeping your youthful looks. Of course a great many women are handicapped by those ills to which women are heir. The conitanUy recurring troubles which afflict her are apt to cause a sour disposition, nervousness and a beclouded mind. Dr. R.V. Pierce, the specialist in woman's diseases, of Buffalo, N. Y., after a long experience in treating such diseases, found that certain roots and herbs made into a liquid extract, would help the majority of cases. This he called Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. Thousands of women hve testified to its merits, and it is put tip in shape to be easily procured and is sold by all medicine dealers. This is a potent tonic for the womanly system. So much faith has Dr. Pierce in its merits that he offers $500 reward for any case of Lencorrhea, Female Weakness, Proiapsus, or Falling of Womb, which he cannot cure. All he asks is a fair and reasonable trial of his means of enre. Mrs. T. Dolan, of Madrid. Perkins Co., Nebr., writes : I was cured of paiaful periods by the tue of Dr. Fierce'a Far rite Inscription, and his Compound 8xtractjf Smart-Weed. I think Dr. Fierce's medicines the best in the world." "Favorite Prescription" makes weak women strong, sick women well. Accept no substitute for the medicine which works wonders for weak women. Dr. Pierce's Common Sense Medical Adviser is sent free on receipt of stamps to pay expense of mailing only. Send 21 one-cent stamps for the paper covered book, or 31 stamps for the cloth-bound volume. Address Dr. JL V. Pierce, 66j IXain Street, Buffalo, N. Y.
