There are several things indicating that Kansas, which has b'rr? taking a lone rest during tie iast four or five years of uninterrupted prosperity, is prepar ing to again assert herself. Kansas is not one of those whose mouths can he stopped with fatness, or whose jaws halt when they drip with 'sweetness. The full dinner pail is neither anodyne nor sedative in Kansas. Plain living and high thinking, or high living and plain thinking, there can never he such a thing any kind of a living in Kansas without thinking of some sort and in some way. Once it was said of Kansas that she could think hard on an empty stomach. The compliment was obvious, but it failed to satisfy Kansas, for the suggestion it left, or Kansas thought it might leave, in the public mind, that she was incapable of thinking on a stomach filled with the overflowing richness of her lands. Kansas is getting ready to cry out that she is still thinking. With one end of the horn of plenty in her mouth mid her cheeks exuding the oil of fullness. Kan sas can not stop thinking. Kansas will think and say what she thinks. And Hoch is her prophet. It has long been known of men that the prohibition law of Kansas, in one of her thinking moods, put into her constitution and her statutes, has become as of the things that were but are not.- The penalities of the outraged law being paid in minimum monthly fines, the publican has known what it would cost him to run a saloon for a year in Kansas, and the city has known what it might expect as revenue from the men who pay their money for the privelege of violating the law and constitution. While Kansas was thinking on an empty stomach, during-the years of Democratic party. reign at Washington, the plan worked well. It brought in revenue and reduced taxes. Hut can Kansas, now doing her thinking on a full stomach, and blessed with great harvests and high prices, become a Sybarite and wink at the defi ance of the law? If Kansas could wink at the defiance of the lawshe cannot wink at the defiance of herself, which is a more personal matter. In her prosperitv she will take advantage of the opportunity to get a fall out of the ungodly, who insist on still paying her money she no longer needs. And the Hoch crusade is sure, unless we have read all of Kansas history for nothing, to result in such a moving of the waters that before long it will be hard to get anything but water in Kansas. The liquor interests should ask themselves howmuch they have contributed to this awakening of the public spirit of Kansas, which, as the world knows, is easier to awaken than to put to sleep. Their constantly growing encroach ments upon the degree of tolera lion .which public opinion had apparently sanctioned, their schemes to avoid the payment of penalty for their lawlessness, by collusion with corrupt politic ians, and the infinite other ways in which thev have exasperated an always hostile majority, have doubtless done much to make the bounteous victuals of Kansas .set heavli' upon its stomach. and make its thinking on a full stomach more, dangerous than in the Democratic davs, when it was thinking on an empty one. Giobe Democrat. Messrs Gordon & Bennett whose production of "A Roval Slave" will be at the opera house tomorrow night, have rapidly risen .to first ranks of New York theatrical managers and this season have on the road seven of their own companies in addition to four others in which thev are financially interested. By careful attention to detail, lavish expen diture of money and the utmost caution in the selection of the personelle of their different com panies, their 'names guarantee to theatre goers an absolutely per fect production. A movement lias been launched in Goshen to revive the county fair idea, and papers Tuesday were placed in circulation for signatures for a subscription toward a $20,000 capital stockcorporation to be formed for this purpose. The counties of. Elkhart, Kosciusko, St. Joseph and I .larshall now- have no "county
ACnOSS COUNTRY. The signs of the times point to an enormous increase of intelligent public interest In health: to a new generation with purer, stronger blood and therefore more active. braver brains ana
body. No physically robust, healthy person ever succumbed to pip. consumption, malaria or any other germ disease. But with a weakened system we all have to fight the germs of disease. Our blood is often in a fertile condition for the growth ol bacteria the gern of disease because our stom ach is disordered or our liver is torpidin either case our blood does not get the proper nourishment. A torpid liver means a stagnation of the blood and an accumulation of ftoisons which urnishes a weak ipot for bacteria to enter. To enrich the blood and increase the red blood corpuscles, Dr. Pierce year? ago found a vegetable compound, which he called Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, th would quickly cure the bad symptoms by increasing the red blood corpuscles and thereby feeding the nerves on rich blood. This "Medical Discovery " al. acts upon the digestion and assimilation of food, so that the blood gets its proper elements from the products of digestion. Feed the lungs, stomach and heart on rich red Mood and you have surely a healthy body which will throw off the germs of disease which lurk everywhere. Get as near nature's way as you can. A medicine made entirely from botanical extracts and which does not contain alcohol is the safest. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery contains neither alcohol nor narcotics. Tables of prices and wages would be worth a good deal more to the average man if he- would keep in mind the fact that to be able to command any kind of wages and to buy at any price the worker must have employment.' The scale wages may be very high and the list of prices be very low, but it is all of little use to him if he cannot find work. The first thing to be considered is the demand for labor, and the wise government is that which contributes as much as possible in -every proper way to this demand. For the last ' lew years the demand for labor has been beyond all precedent, and reasonable legislation has much to do with it. -Thomas Huxley it was, who described the brain as a perfect logic engine, working without friction, without fret and without fear, with the strain equally divided. "The questioirlhen becomes," says Dr. Pierce, w how to run this engine without blowing up the boiler, without accident, and without sending the locomotive to the repair shop. An ignorant man cannot run an- engine ; neither can a man over-work his brain unless he observes certain laws of health without meeting with some disaster." If the engine is properly oiled and cared for it will last a great many years, and in the same way if the human mechanism is properly looked after it will last the allotted three score and ten years. As civilization progresses, the draft on the brain and nerves increases, but no class of work burns up blood as fast as brain work. Hard work confined to shop or office, without the invigorating air and sunshine becomes the pace that kills, the muscles and flesh become flabby and the blood watery. The human system must be a laboratory for the constant manufacture of rich, red blood. Success and courage depend upon the blocd and the blood depends upon the stomach, for the stach, when healthy, takes up from the food we eat the elements required for the blood.. If the stomach cannot assimilate the food taken up, then the blood and the nerves starve for the proper nourishment they require. This human machine soon breaks down, like the engine without coal for its boilers, because the heart, liver and lungs do not receive the pure blood necessary to keep them strong and active. w Remember this, that our bodies will not stand the strain of over-work without good, pure blood any more than the engine can run smoothly without oil." After many years of study in the active practice of medicine, Dr. R. V. Pierce found that when the stomach was out of order, the blood impure and there were symptoms of general break - down, a tonic made of the alterative extracts of certain herns and roots was the best corrective. This he called: Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. For over a third of a century this tonic and alterative has been more largely sold than any other blood medicine or nerve tonic. Reing made without alcohol, this "Medical Discovery " does not shrink up the red blood corpuscles, but on the other hand it increases their number, and they become round and-healthy. It helps the stomach to assimilate or take up the proper elements from the food, thereby helping digestion and curing dyspepsia, heartburn, and many uncomfortable symptoms, such as heart-palpitation due to gas formed in the stomach. It is especially adapted in diseases attended with excessiv tissue waste, especially in convalescence from the various spring fevers, whether of a malarial or typhoid character. As a tonic and reconstructive during and after the influences of grip it will prove of particular value. It has been extensively used as a re -builder after the severity of a rheumatic attack. Co., N. Y. "One year ago last December, my husband, ijorenie D. Cronk, was taken sick with typhoid fever ; he had s, double fun and then suffered a relapse, which left him with lumbago and bowel trouble. Every time he would try to work he would have an attack and each time more severe. He continued to grow worse until about the last of August, at which time he was reduced to a mere skeleton, not weighing over ninety pounds. Everyone gave him up to die when the leaves fell. I could not bear to give him up without trying Doctor Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, having tested it in my own case and having used it jointly with your Favorite Prescription ' and Pleasant Pellets. These medicines saved my life three years ago. I began giving my husband one teaspoonful of the 'Golden Medical Discovery four times a day. In a few days he began to have a better appetite and rest better nights. He continued to improve and has now taken nine bottles of the Golden Medical Discovery and seven vials of the Pellets ' and is feeling good. Weighs 145 pounds and is gaining every day. He is now able to do quite a good deal of work. Everyone who sees him, says, I never expected to see you out and around again. He tells them they never would if it had not been for Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and Pleasant Pellets. Thanks be to God and to Dr. R. V. Pierce."
