QÖEER SMD6GLIH6 TRICKS. METHODS OF OLD TIME RUNNERS OF REVENUE WERE VARIED.
The Art Has Greatly Decayed In Re cent Years Baffled in a Search The Famous Hiding Place at Gower An Italian's Clever Ruse. Smuggling effectively Is one of those fine arts that has decayed, at least in England, where, as we have duties on little else than tobacco, tea and spirits, and where we have a sea board closely watched, It cannot be carried out to any extent successfully. In Gower, at Llangenneth, the runners of smuggled goods had contrived a most ingenious "cache." A little stream falls In cascades from the mountain above. They diverted the stream, formed a cellar under the spot where the water splashes down, well covered with broad slates above, on which .they cast torrent rubble, and In this hid their kegs. But a storm brought the stream down with such violence that one niglit it tore away the roof and revealed the concealed rum goods. In many a farm house near the coast throughout Eng land the chimneys were constructed so as to have a chamber in the depth of the wall, entered through a hole some little way up the chimney; and many a so-?alled priest's chamber in an ancient mansion, though it may have served as a hiding place for a Romn chaplain, most certainly served more frequently as a cellar in which to stow away contraband spirits. For the gentry were, In a large number of cases, quite willing to connive at the proceedings of tha "free traders." A certain baron 3t In South Devon, who died not so long ago, wa3 shrewdly suspected of being hand-In-glove with these gentry. At last the officers were constrained to pay him a domiciliary visit. "By all means," said the baronet, "search high and low; here are the keys of my cellars, and here also of the attics." The functionaries made a good search, and discovered nothing. They had omitted to examine the old yellowbodied family coach, which all the while was crammed with kegs. But if the art is in decline to death in England, this is by no means tho case on the Continent. In France there are not merely the frontier ports watched, but each town has its "octroi," and food and liquor entering have to pay a toll, which takes the place of our rates. There Is, accordingly, an incessant effort mada, not at the frontier only, but in every town, to outwit those who watch to impose a duty or a tax. There was a local Mrs. Jarley who went about with her waxworks in the frontier towns of Belgium and France; and every one of her figures was a receptacle for spirits or lechlin or Valenciennes lace; and a roaring trade was done by this means, and might have continued had not the manageress of the show quarrelled with one of the underlings about some small advance in wage. "Xo such a being exists a3 a small enemy," said Talleyrand; and so this fellow proved. He betrayed the whole thing. Next time that the waxworks passed the frontier the figures were examined. The Sultan of Morocco, though strictly forbidden by the Koran to take fermented liquor, was full of cognac; Rousseau with the "contrat social" in his' hand, wa3, packed with lace; Fenelon, Archbishop of Cambral, had his bosom and his mitre charged with English silks; Marat, bleeding in his bath, was full of English jams, even sugar, and Charlotte Corday was nothing other than a great case of comftts. On the Swiss and French frontier an Italian plied his trade. He had a bear, and a monkey that sat on the back of Bruin. Sometimes He was in France, sometimes In Switzerland. But actually the beast he traveled with was an ass. Tin receptacles had been formed adapted to his sides and back, and . these were filled with brandy, and the whole was covered over with the skin of a huge bear. Rer. S. Baring-Gould, in Chamber's Journal. DEATH IN RACE FOR RICHES. Strain of Modern Life Adds to Victims of Heart Disease. Since 1S6S the' annual death rate from heart disease and Bright's disease up to the end of 1904 has inCreased from 13.05 to 23.62 per 10, 000 population. In 1903, with the same ratio, to 1904 there was an increase in deaths from these diseases of 2.42 in each 10,000. While this was considered an alarming Increase in the morTuary records the fact that 123 persons died last week from organic heart disease, when the death rate the corresponding week In 1904 was only 56, has given rise to the belief among physicians that New York residente are living too rapid lives. The strain of business and the cares attendant on fierce competition in the centre of the city and the worry attendant on anxiety to gain wealth are given as an explanation by ph5'sicians of the conditions which exist in the world's metropolis today. Physicians have established the fact that the nerve forces which control both the stomach and the heart are affected by the hurry of men In the daily scramble to bolt their food In order to quickly resume their exciting careers. Many young men now succumb to the complaint where fifty years ago a case wa3 rare when a person under thirty years, unless bothered by a hereditary complaint, died from heart disease. Women are uso victims. This in attributed to the manner in which they worry over social engagements and the strife to reach the top rung of the social ladder. Worry and excitement, together with many nerve shocks which come to all New Yorkers in their daily life, are the princlpal causes which snap the heart strings and making living so uncertain. Dr. F. C. Spitzka, authority on ner-
' vou3 disorders and complaints or tne
stomach, said last night: "One person in a hundred who have their hearts examined has real organic heart trouble. The other ninety-nine mo'st likely have stomaca trouble of various degrees, accompanied by palpitations. Out of a hundred' who have organic heart trouble developing one knows it. The other ninety-nine do not find It out until they go to a life insuranco company. The overwhelming number of cases where people complain of pain in the region of their hearts will show that the heart Is healthy.. Excitement and strain on the nerves of the stomach, which also influence the heart, is one of the causes for so many deaths from this disease. This nerve exhaustion is often due to stomach trouble. Anxiety is -very hurtful. In athletics the young men and women begin too young. There are too many tremendous exertions in athletics. Tho heart Is developed prematurely. Physicians are better able to diagnose complaints of the heart than they were fifty years ago." Dr. Themas Darlington, president o! the Board of Health, said: "We are living too fast. Wo work too hard and we worry too much. The business man enters his field j-oung. There 13 not a moment of his life wasted 'when he undertakes a business. It is true also of the women who seek to keep up their social engagements when they should more often rest, and allow their nerves to become calm." Dr. George F. Shrady made the following comment: "Our business men work too arduously and women take upon themselves greater mental and physical strains than they can carry. It is the bustle and the hurry to become wealthy, without regard to the tension to which the nerves are brought, that causes disorders directly affecting the heart. Men engaged in business learn too late that they have exhausted their vitality and brought upon the hard working organ of the body more strain than it should stand." New York Herald. Old Sevres. The other day a Sevres. vase was sold at Christie's for 4,000 guineas. Thi3 Is proof positive that the pate entdre, the plaything of Louis the Well Beloved, the Pompadour and the Du Barry, retains all its fascination for the collector. Old Sevre3 porcelain holds its own among those who are wealthy enough to buy it, because, within definite lim its, it is perfect. The united skill ol the best French chemists, potters, artists and sculptors of the time went to its making; the sordid necessity ol earning a profit did not trouble tho director of Sevres; for an easy going monarch was always ready to make good the yearly loss. Technical perfection no less was aimed at, and It was attained. Frenchmen of that day grumbled at the waste of public money on the Pompadour's whim, but Louis took no heed. Sevres was to produce the finest porcelain at any cost, for the glory of France and her Bourbon Kings. London Outlook. Japanese Gold Fish Farms. Although the goldfish occurs in a wild state in Japan, it Is probable that China some 400 years ago furnished the stock from which the wonderful varieties of Japanese goldfish have been bred. It Is reported that In feudal days, even when famine was abroad in the land, and many people were starving, the trade In goldfish was flourishing. The demand at present appears to be without limit, and the output shows a substantial increase each year. Many thousand people make a living by growing goldfish for market, and hundreds of peddlers carry the fish through the streets and along the country roads in wooden tubs suspended from a shoulder bar.. The leading centre is Koriyama, near the ancient capital city of Nara. Here are 330 independent breeding establishments, whose yearly product runs far into the millions. One farm which I visited was started 140 years ago. At first It was conducted merely for the pleasure of the owner, but it eventually became a commercial enterprise, and is now very profitable. Geographical Magazine. The Power of Resolution. Poverty and failure are self-invited. The disaster people dread often comes to them. Worry and anxiety enfeeble their force of mind and so blunt their creative and productive faculties that they are unable to exercise them properly. Fear of failure or lack of faith in one's ability Is one of the most potent causes of. failure. Many people of splendid powers have attained only mediocre success and some are total failures beyond which they did not allow themselves to think they could pass. They put limitations to their ability; they cast stumbling blocks in their way by aiming only at mediocrity of predicting failure for themselves, talking their wares down instead of up, disparaging their business and belittling their powers. Thoughts are forces, and the constant affirmation of one's inherent right and power to succeed will change inhospitable coudftions and unkind environments to favorable ones. If. you resolve upon success with energy, you will very soon create a success atmosphere and things vill come your way; you will make yourself a success magnet. Success. .The Terrible Wretch. "Why, Mabel, dear, what's the matter?" cried the tearful bride's mother. "Tell me all about it Don't keep back a thing, darling. What has the brute been doing?" "When I wanted him to lock the windows last night he 6aid that there was nothing but me for burglars to c-c-carry away, and he wasn't at all afraid. Boo-hoo-hoo!" Chicago Record-Herald. A "fishing frog," weighing sixty pounds has been landed at Yarmouth, England. -
Ko Veto Power In Ohio. Ohio is the only grate In which tho governor does not possess the power of veto, according to the Brooklyn Eagle. The story dates back nearly 100 years to the time when Arthur St. Clair was the territorial governor of Ohio. In thoje days the fee for a marriage license In Ohio was $2, and according to the law such a fee went Into the pockets of the governor. The general assembly finally decided to repeal the Etatute, and not desiring to deprive the governor of this particular source of revenue, two bills were passed, one repealing the law permitting the governor to annex the marriage license fee and the other Increasing his salary a proportionate amount But the governor, with a keen eye for the main chance, signed the bill raising his salary and vetoed the bill depriving him of tte marriage fees. The general assembly passed the vetoed bill over the governor's protest, but Mr. St. Clair was sustained by the legislative council. There was a general
mixup for a while and later the con stitutional convention met and abol ished the veto power. Fifty years later, in 1832, another constitutional convention was held, but ail attempts to incorporate a veto power into the State constitution were defeated. Reads Like a Miracle. Moravia, N. Y.. Dr. Fridtjof Nausen, the Norwegian explorer, tells an amusincr story of a J Norwegian girl who came to the Unit ed States. "This girl," said Dr. Nansen, "journeyed to the United States in search of employment She was taken into a household as a cook, but failed to give satisfaction. Nearly everything she undertook ended in failure, and, finally, the lady of the house asked, despairingly: "Norah, is there anything you can do?" "Yces," responded Norah, with a grin, "ay can milk reindeer." TWO YEARS OF AGONY. One Cake of Cuticura Soap and One Box of Cuticura Cnred Baby's Awful -Humor. "When my sister was eighteen months old a humor broke out on her shoulders, extending clear across the back. For two years it caused her intense suffering. It would scab over and then crack open and a watery matter ooze from it Then the scabs would fall off and it would be raw for a time. We had several different doctors and tried everything we could think of, but without effecting a cure.
