London's Old Clothes. In tnose parts of London in wh'chl the penny is the standard of value there is a traffic In second-hand materials of sort that Is unheard of In. Any city of America. For example, a dress costing 100 guineas and worn by a woman of fashon on one of the days of the Ascot meeting will be seen perhaps twice thereafter, once at a garden party and again at some function remote from town, after which it becomes the perquisite of the lady's maid, from whom It Is bought by an oily woman who maintains what is called a "ladies wardrobe" in Brixton or Bayswater. To the dingy parlor In which this oily mannered woman transacts her business comes the wives of struggling attorneys, medical men and city clerks. Intent on bargains, and to one of these, the Ascot dress "Positively worn by Lady G. in the royal inclosure," as the oily woman informs her in an awed whisper, is knocked down at the low price of ten guineas. Its new owner wears it until It Is too shabby to be worn again, after which It is sold to a second rate wardrobe and becomes the property of a green-grocer's wife, who takes it to pieces, retrims It and wears It out of the shop until It Is once more shabby. Then it is sold to a third rate wardrobe, where it catches the eye of some coster lady and Is sold for three shillings. Saturday Evening Post.

For Growing Girls. West Pembroke, Me., April Si. Mrs. A. L. Smith, of this place, says that Dodd's Kidney Pills are the best remedy for growing girls. Mrs. Smith emphasizes her recommendation by the following experience: "My daughter was thirteen years old last November and It is now two years since she was first taken with Crazy Spells that would last a week and would then pass off. In a month she would have the spells again. At these times she would eat very little and was very yellow; even the whites of her eyes would be yellow. "The doctors gave us no encouragement; they all said they could not help her. After taking one box of Dodd's Kidney Pills, she has not Jiad one bad spell. Of course, we continued the treatment until she had used in all about a dozen boxes, and we still give them to her occasionally, when she is not feeling well. Dodd's Kidney Pills are certainly the best medicine for growing girls." Mothers should heed the advice of Mrs. Smith, for by so doing, they may save their daughters much pain and sickness and insure a healthy, happy future for t'aem. Traveling Companions. An excellent test of a friend is the making of a Journey in his company. Many who are most agreeable amid the little events of every day at home, or in an accustomed round, are unable to withstand the petty annoyances that come with travel the deferred meals, early rising, loss of sleep, the minor discomforts we all have suffered. But none of these affects the icmper of a favorite book. It is ever ready for your amusement, yet never resents being put aside. It has no choice as to your route, and asks no more than a little corner of your traveling bag, or, at a pinch, will go into a pocket as snugly as a pet squirrel. The London "Academy" says: "Indeed, of all traveling comrades books are the most genial and the most gentle; not books of travel they are for the home fireside, but tales that have for background the scenery you are looking upon, or histories which deal with men and women who have dwelt and worked In the cities you are visiting." St Nicholas. ANOTHER RECORD HUNTING. IN LAND. ThU Spring's Exodns toCanada Greater than Lver. It was thought In IOCS, when over fifty thousand people went from the United States to Canada, that the limit of the yearly emigration to the wheat zone of the Continent had been reached. But when in about as large a number of American citizens signified their intention of becoming settlers on Canadian lands, the general public were prepared for the announcement of large numbers in 1905. No surprise therefore will be caused when It is made known that the predictions of fully fifty thousand in 1905 are warranted in the fact that the Spring movement Canadaward is greater than it has ever been. The special trains from Omaha, Chicago, St. Paul, Detroit and other gateways have been crowded. Many have gone to join friends and relatives who have prepared homes for them, and others have gone relying' upon their own resources, satisfied that what others have done can also be done by them. This year much new territory has been opened up by the railroads, which are extending their main lines and throwing out branches in their march across the best grain and grazing lands on the continent This new territory has attractions for those desiring to homestead on the one hundred an! sixty acres granted each mtter by the Canadian Government Miny also take advantage of the opportunity to purchase lands at the low figures at which they are now being offered. It does not require much thought to convince one that if Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and other lands, with a value of.from fifty to one hundred and fifty dollars an acre, will give a good Ving by producing tten to thirteen bushels of wheat to the acre and thirty to fifty bushels of corn to the acre, the lands of Western Canada at seven to ten dollars an acre, producing from twenty to thirty bushels of a superior wheat to the acre, should produce a competence to the ordinary farmer in a T?ry few years. These are the facts as they confront the reader. There are millions of eres of such land In Western Canada In addition to the other millions that are con sidered to be portions of the biggest and best ranges that ever invited the cattle and horse producer of the North American continent -What Is particu larly evident In W estern Canada is the fact that the wheat lands, adjoining the grazing lands, make farming par ticularly agreeable and profitable. It has been found that the currents round the coast of Newfoundland make at times a wide differeuce In the direction of the drift of icebergs and that of the flat or pan ice, which, having ; no great depth, is governed in its mo- j Hrm hv tha snrfnpo nrronta or3 tha winds. The icebergs, the larger part of which are submerged to a great depth, says the New York Herald, follow only the movement of the ocean water ' as a whole and are Influenced by the winds. Thus a hue iceberg may often be seen majestically maintaining its slow advance In opposition to the wind and across the general motion of the fields of flat ice surrounding it. The sealers often take advantage of this fact by mooring their vessels to an Iceberg to prevent their ship drifting to leeward.
