ORIGINAL "BUSTER BROWN."
Jolly Lad Whose Twinkling; Bine Eyes Won Fame for K. F. Ontcault. The only and original . "Buster Brown" is in Denver. He Is Roger Cushman Clark, the 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace S. Clark of Leadville, S. D., and is visiting bis grandmother, Mrs. I. S. Cushman. Horace Clark is one of the most prominent mining men in the country and is well known both hero and in Europe. The story or how R. F. Outcault, the originator of "Baster Brown." met his model is an interesting one. Little Roger has done a great deal of traveling in his short life, and one time while in New York with his parents he stopped at the same hotel at which Mr. Outcault was living. Roger is large for his age, has the very yellowest of yellow hair, which he wears In the "bob" fashion, and he was always dressed the same? long belted coat, a suggestion of trousers below it, white collar, and a great fluffy tie. It was Roger's eyes, however, that attracted the artist's attention. They are large and dark blue and have a certain little twinkle In them that convinces one the owner of them is fully equal to all the tricks "Buster Brown" ever tried. With a great deal of interest and amusement Mr. Outcault watched the little boy and finally the two became fast friends. One day Roger was even more mischievous than ever, and it was then that the twinkling eyes of the little boy made Mr. Outcault think of "Buster Brown." lie drev one series of pictures and they were no successiUl that he has been drawing them ever since. Every day "Buster Brown" Clark goes out wallflng with his grandmother or his mother, but there is something missing on each occasion and that something is no other than "Tige." Of course "Buster" still his "Tige," but he decided that the dog could not come with him this time, because grandmas do not always like dogs and "Tigo" sometimes forgets to be mannerly. Denver Post Arab Barter Making. Among the Arabs an interesting department of woman's duty is dairy work. This,1 like all other operations. Is carried out on an old-fashioned and patriarchal plan. To make butter, for instance, a small sheepskin is filled with milk -and tied to a ring in the wall. The woman then sits flat on the floor and rocks it to and fro till little balls of butter begin to form within. These grow larger aud larger and accumulate and are finally brought out r one big lump. The remaining milk is then boiled on the fire with bits of meat The male members of the family now come together; a large dish of cooked rice Is placed before them and the boiled milk poured over it Then, making balls of the mixture with their hands, each member quickly swallow i his share and rises to wash his hands. This done, the girl3 and mother sit down and eat what the men are pleased to leave.
LEARNING THINGS.
We Are All in the Apprentice Class. When a simple change of diet brings back health and happiness the story Is briefly told. A lady of Springfield, 111., says: "After being afflictfd for years with nervousness and heart trouble, I received a shock four years ago that left me in such a condition that my life' was despaired of. I could get no relief from doctors nor from the numberless heart and nerve medicines I tried because I didn't know that the coffee was dally putting me back more than the doctors could put me ahead. "Finally at the request of a friend I left off coffee and began the use of Postum, and against my convictions I gradually improved in health until for the past six or. eight months I have been entirely free from nervousness and those terrible sinkings weakening spells of heart trouble. . "My troubles all came from the nse of coffee, which I had drunk from childhood, and yet they disappeared when I quit coffee and took tip the use cf rostum." Name given by Postum Co., Battle, Creek, Mich. Many people marvel at the effects of leaving off coffee and drinking Postum, but there is nothing marvelous about it only common sense. Coffee Is a destroyer Postum is a rebuilder. That's the reason. Look in each .pkg.; for the famous little book. "The Road to Wellrüls."
WORK IN BEING A DOCTOR. An TJnpleasantry Recited by Conan Dojle to an American. An American woman asked Conan Doyle one day why he had given up the practice of medicine. "Because the work was too hard," Doyle answered. "Oh, It can't be hard to be a doctor," said the woman. "It is both hard and unpleasant And to prove it," said the novelist "I'll tell you about my first case. "My first case came to me in the middle of the night. It was January, and a cold rain was falling. The Jangle of the door bell awoke me from a sound sleep, and, shivering and yawning, I put my head out of the window and said, 'Who's there? "'Doctor, said a voice, 'can you come to Peter Smith's house at once?' "'What's the trouble r I asked. "'Smith's youngest girl has took a dose of laudanum in mistake for paregoric, and we're afraid she'll die. "'All right; I'll come,' raid I. "I dressed, and I tramped three miles through the cold and the rain to Smith's. Twice, on the way, I fell on the icy pavement, and once my hat blew off. and in the darkness I was nearly half an hour finding it. "Finally, though, I reached Smith's. But the house was dark shutters all closed not a light 1 rang the bell. No answer. But at last a head stuck itself gingerly out of a third-story window. " 'Be you Dr. Doyle?' it said. " 'Yes said I. 4Lt me in.' 44 'Oh, no need to come In, doctor,' said the head. 'The child's all right now. Sleeping very quiet 'But how much laudanum did you give it?' said I. " 'Only two drops, doctor. Not enough to hurt a cat. I guess I'd better take my head in now. The night air is cold. Good 'night Sorry to have troubled you.' "I buttone-d up my coat and turned homeward, trying as best I could to stille my mortification and anger. But suddenly the window was raised again, and the same voice cried: " 'Doctor! I say, doctor? "I hurried back. I thought thö child had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. 'Well, what do you want?' I said. "The voice made answer: "'Ye won't charge nothin' for this visit, will ye?' Kin Brian Born of Ireland. King Brian Boru was the subject of an extremely interesting paper read by Mr. M. C. Seton before the Irish Literary Society at 20 Hanover Square recently, says the St. Jqmes Gazette. Mr. Seton related many details of King Brian's career which are not generally known. According to the Annals of Innisfallen where Brian was educate:1. he was born in Ö25, and was the son of Kennedy, king of North Munster, who died in 950. King Brian conquered all the princes of Ireland, and then converted the country into a land of peace, this period being known as "The Golden Age." Brian built churches and schools and provided money to buy books. For 12 years he reigned supreme king of Ireland, and all went well until the beautiful but bad Gormflaith appeared upon the sesne. This lady was the sister of Mael Mordha, king of Leinster, and first married Malache, king of the North of Ireland, from whom she was divorced, marrying secondly Olaff, the Danish king of Dublin, after whose death she married Brian Boru, with whom she soon quarreled. Being, apparently, rather more than usually treacherous and vindictive, she sent her Danish son Cedric to invite the Danes to conquer Ireland and, at the same time, in her airy way, authorized him to promise her hand in marriage to several Norse chiefs who came over to Ireland for that bribe. Then was fought the famous battle of Clontarf in 1014, after which Malache became sole king of Irelaud. Poor King Brian was killed after the battle, in his tent, and his body was brought to Armagh.
