Since awakening the pontiff has been restless and a dose of chloral was administered. Rome, July 11, 0:40 a. m. The usual gathering of watchers, mostly journalists, -witnessed from the piazza of St. Peter's the opening of the win dows of the papal apartment this morning. From what has leaked out from the sick room it appears that no significant change has taken place in the condition of the patient up to the present hour. Dr. Lapponi succeeded in having Pope Leo take a sufficient quantity of nourishment during the night. Operation Brings Some Relict Koine, July 11, 4:T0 a. m. Another operation. ie: formed yesterday, has Lrought further relief to Poie Leo, and by it the inability of his life be ing prolonged was Increased, but it can hardly be said that the operation improved his chances of recovery. Xews just received from the Vatican says the Kie Is now lying in a fst Jess condition after having had a good .sleep during the early hou.s of this morning. As an immediate result of yesteray's operation the pope spent a quiet and almost painless day, with for his age a normal temperature, .and he only more strikingly exhibited lLis strength of constitution and Intel Iect. Another Operation Probable. At the examination last evening the doctors could not perceive any regath erinjr of serum In the pleu:al cavity, tmt it was feared that presence of serum would be detected tday, thus rendering necessary perhaps another operation in a few days. After the pope woke up about 2 o'clock this morning he asked for food. His pulse was taken and found to vary from S7 to 1X5. Ills temierature was 90.8 and his breathing irregular. Later Dr. Lapponi administered a dose of chloraland grfve rz.e patient at the same time an injection of camphor-caffeine. Many Calls After the Operation. The news of yesterday morning's operation sent cardinals and ambassadors driving hurriedly to the Vatican. The somber black carriages and horses of the former, relieved only by glimpses of the scarlet robes worn by the pale faced occupants, contrasted strangely "with the brilliant equipages of the am bassadors. Outside St. Peter's the or dinary visitors hurried past the Swiss .guards and ascended the staircase lead Ing to the Inner court of the Vatican. Carriage after carriage drove Into the court. The French, German and other ambassadors descended to make in quirles. Prince Massino, looking al most as venerableas the pope himself. PONTIFF I1AS A FÄITOFUL, VALBf Refuse to Leave the Patient and Main tain! a Sleepless Vigil at DI Side. Rome, July 11. A lowly hero has been developed by the pope's Illness In the person of Pia Centra, the faith ful valet of the pontiff, who maintains a sleepless vigil, night and day, over his beloved master. When Centra is watching alone through the long nights he looks on the venerable pon tiff with the eyes of a mother anxious ly studying tlu progress of a disease In her child. Frequently the patient's eyes are un able to gaze on Centra's face, but the two men. without speaking, under stand each other peifectly. The fatigue of the present ordeal has almost broken down the faithful attendant, but nev ertheless he obstinately refuses to yield to others the houor of tendering his services. Whenever the pope wakes from a short drowse he calh? for Centra, knowing that the latter fully un derstands his slightest pe sonal wishes. The doctors and members of the pope's household advise almost com mand Centra to take a rest, but he refuses to listen to them, respectfulhe considers his post to be beside the pope, and no one about the Vatican seems to have the power to drive him from the pope's side. ly giving every one to understand that it is useless to annoy him, and that Dlseane Is Simple Plcnrlsr. The vicar of Rome has issued a proclamation asking for p ayers everywhere fcr the recovery of his holiness. rilEPARING FOR A NEW POPE Vatican lias JIade Up Its Mind That Death is a Matter of Days. Whatever may be the outcome the Vatican world has fully made up Its mind that the demise of the pop Is only a question of days at the nvst, and probably only of hours. With this being the prevalent view every detail for conducting the affairs of thechurch during the interregnum and for carrying out the election of Pope Leo's successor Is being systematically arranged. Following advices from the Vatican, the cardinals throughout the world are hurrying Homeward, anticipating the holding of a conclave for the choice of a pope. All day the court of the Vatican leading to the pope's apartments Is thronged with distinguished visitors seeking Information as to the pope's condition. Practically the entire diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican is among the inquirers, and many cardinals are also among the groups. The popular solicitude for the pope's condition has led to an amelioration of the rigid rules closing the entrances. High and low, coming to ask about the pope's condition, were equally admitted to the inner court, where the bulletins sJpnied by the doctors were conspicuously exhibited. If at any stage of the procedure It shall appear that there are -those in your city who desire to deprive it of its efforts to exercise the functions conferred by the people, then the state will be ready to give further demonstration of its disposition and its ability to do with rioters as they deserve.
