The best service a state conention can render a party is to nominate a good ticket that will win votesbecause of the fitness of the candidates. Inquiry into charges against prison ottice rs is begun at Michigan City, Governor Durbin attending. Dr. Home reiterates accusations of cruelty. Several hundred of the farming population in Zapata county, southwestern Texas, are said tobe suffering from a famine as distressing as those that occur in India. This year's memorial address at Grant's tomb will be delivered by United States District Judge Thomas Leopold, of Montgomery, Ala., who was among the Confederates at the Appomattox surrender. In spite of all the talk about charges beinr made dv officials of crutltv in the Michigan City prison not a written charge has been made in seven years. Verbal complaints have been made, and these have been considered. It should be understood that the in vestigation going on at the State Prison is conducted by the board of charities and that the decision will be made by that body. Two of its members were appointed because they are democrats, and one of the democrats is an experienced lawyer. Many beet growers in Holland are about to emigrate to the United States, believing that they can do much' better in this country. They will have one very decided advantage, at anv rate. If the raising of beets is not found to be as profitable as they expected, there are many other things, equally good which with a little encouragement will grow in our soil. r CH1LD5 SET Knife Fork &5ooor 50 BANDS 2

Carter Harrison is getting tired of the mayor's office in Chicago and thinks new blood is needed. He says if he is of the same opinion when his term expires he will not ask a renomi-nomination.
President Diaz of Mexico is said to be contemplating a six months' leave of absence that he may be able to visit Europe. Nothing could speak more eloquently for the stability of his government than this. Two more indictments have been found in the Goebel murder case. "What new political combination is on foot in Kentucky? As for narrowing down the matter to finding the assassin that idea seems never to have occurred to the Goebelities. If they should step on the murderer they would turn a handspring in the opposite direction. Globe Democrat. American methods are illustrated by the fact that while 100 tons is a load for an English freight train, an average load on one of our railroads last year was 540 tons. On two British railroads it costs from 48 cents to $1.33 to move a ton of freight one mile, while the cost on a leading New York road is 23 cents a mile. No wonder the European world is waking up to these marked differences. It is not the bribe-takers of our city councils and legislatures that ought to receive the severest punishment though it; should certainly be most severe but it is the promoters, attorneys and corporations that pay the bribes. The wealthy men of decent antecedents and of recognized position I in society, that seek to corrupt the ; servants of the public to betray their trusts they are the men that deserve the severest condemnation and the heaviest penaltv. DEMOCRATIC NOMNATIONS. The plans of the leaders went through without a hitch and all the old officers were renominated at the socalled pri carv election Thursday. This shows that the democrats have a thorough organization in Plymouth and the bosses have the voters of the party well in hand. But the leaders were badly scared for awhile Thursday. They had induced Jesse Hoham to become a candidate for the nomination for clerk and Win Morrow was put up against Tom Chaney simply to have an excuse for a primary vote. The boys went out and hustled and in order to beat them it was found necessary to induce a number of republicans to go to the polls and vote for the slate candidates.

The ticket which democrats are expected to vote is as follows: Mayor, P. O. Jones; Clerk, A. E. Rhodes; Marshal, Thomas Chaney; Treasurer, J. N. Wilson; Councilmen 1st Ward, Dr. Reynolds, Samuel Parker; 2nd Ward, Godfrey Shearer, J. D. McLaren;, 3d Ward. Ed Gibson and W. U. Kyle. The republicans should put up a good ticket composed of representative citizecs. This will leave the party in good shape if their candidates are defeated. A large number of voters declare their intention to select the best candidates and vote for them. The parties in this city are about equally divided, consequently honest, competent republicans will have more than an even chance to win.
General MacArthur's testimony be fore the senate Philippines committee shows that he is not only a good soldier, but an American patriot of broad views and farsighted vision. There has been no better exposition of the strategic and commercial value of the islands than he gave nor any higher ideal of the American mission than his statement "we should regard ourselves as a people the custodians of an imperishable idea field in trust for mankind, and we would proclaim this message to the world." General MacArthur evidently does not fear that the principles of republican goverment will spoil in the tropics. Indianapolis Journal. No state in the union has been benefited more, or is to benefit more, from the Roosevelt pclicies of expansion and reciprocity, and from measures favored by the republicans in congress, thai South Carolina. With newmarkets on the Gulf and Pacific for her staple products, with the Nicaragua canal giving her a short route to the Orient, with her industries fostered by the protective policy, there is every prospect of South Carolina's becoming one of the most prosperous states in the Union. South Carolina's men are beginning to realize these things, and their welcomeof the president means that they appreciate them. Inter Ocean. . The department of agriculture has issued a statement of the foreign trade of the United States in agricultural pr:ducts. It shows that during the fiscal year 1901 foreign countries purchased American farm products to the value of 8952,000,000, representing the largest agricultural exports in our history. Compared with the record for 190) they show an increase The

of over $100,000,000. Our agricultural imports on the oi her hand disclose a considerable faMin& off when contrasted with the trade of the year preceding. The various products of agriculture received from foreign sources during 1901 had an aggregate value of only $392,000,000 or $28,000,000 less than in 1900. In comparison witn the value of our agricultural imports, our agricultural exports show the exceptionally large excess of $560,000,000. Senator McMillan, of Michigan, has Introduced a bill providing that hereafter all paper -money issued by the United States in denominations of $5 and less, except national bank notes, shall be in the form known as the post check, and shall be convertible at the pleasure of the holder into a check to a named payee, such check to be exChangeable foj current money at any money order postoffice. The object, of course, is to promote convenience and safety in transmitting money by mail.
INDEPENDENT VOTING. A striking illustration of the force of independent voting is furnished by the returns of the citv election over at St. Joseph, Mich. The' total vote in the First ward was 244. Of these GO were straight democratic and 52 straight republican. The democratic candidate for mayor polled 100 votes and the republican nominee 188. In the Second ward the total vote wls 321, of which only 46 were straight republican and 110 straight democratic. The republican candidate for mayor had 116 votes and the democratic candidate 189 votes. In the Third ward 292 votes were cast, 89 straight republican and C5 democratic The republican candidate for mayor polled 174 and the democratic candidate 100 votes. In the Fourth ward 297 votes were cast, 44 being straight republican and 64 straight democratic. The republican candidate for mayor received 148 and the democratic candidate 121 votes. The total votes in the city was 1,154, of which 231 were straight republican and 299 straight democratic, These figures demonstrate that, while 530 voters deposited straight tickets. 624 voted as suited their personal preference. WORTH $380,039,000. The President of a certain big Oil CompaLv i3 said to be -worth $300,000.000. A tich bit of money and no mistake. And yet he isn't happy. In an address to a Bible cias3 he spoke of trials and troubles of the rich and the loads they Lave to carry. A young lady whispered to a friend that he might wear a Benson's Porous Plaster on his back or, better still, divide the money among the members of the class. I don't know why her idea about the plaster makes me want to laugh, but it does. All the same I have seen plenty of people laugh after putting Benson's Piasters on their backs or chests, or on any other spot where thero wa3 weight, heaviness, weakness or pain. It may be the sharp stabs of neuralgia, the aches and wrenches of rheumatism ; it may be colds in muscles or bones ; it may be those kidney or lumbago thrus's that make you yell as at a do? bite ; or it may be strain or cramp, anything that wants quieting and comforting. Dont bother with salres, liniments, lotions, etc., or with any of the stupid and useless old style plasters. Clap on a Benson's. It relieves at ones and cures quickly. It stps the pain and makes you laugh for the very ease and good feeling of it. But watch out against im itations and substitutes.
